Title: Class of 24’ Post by: Slim9797 on February 07, 2024, 08:32:42 am I went solo Thursday Friday and Saturday last week. Found hogs everywhere we went. Killed a few and missed a few we should have gotten killed. My 9 month old pups got to see their first few rallies and it was a learning curve. Killed 7 between Thursday and Saturday, nothing much picture worthy.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20240207/23a9b641b8a5da057efcca596984026e.jpg)
We had like 18” of rain in about a 12 day span so all my bottom country is flooded and hogs are scattered. Saturday missed a big boar sketch and Misty walked an impressive washed out track to on a big creek that was level bank and rolling. He jumped in when I walked in and was gone in about 3 seconds. Thankfully I kept sketch and Misty from trying it with him. Sunday I wanted to end on a high note so me and tim got together and headed to the prairie. Navidad river bottom country. Took getting in to the third place before we got around anything fresh. Sketch went and put a 150 lb boar up that really had running on his mind but they bounced him up and down the river a few times and he finally bayed in some bad briars on the bank. After that we casted off a feeder and a bunch of the young dogs made a hell of a deer race lol. Teaching moment. Sketch walked the river for about 30-45 minutes out to 3/4 mile or so before we reeled it back in and fell bayed in a bend at about 600. Went a grabbed the youngins and then sent them to her and went. We broke it walking in and I broke one of her hips down from across the river. She sat up pretty quick after that and we decided to let them dogs really bay, and that they did. Sat there watching for over an hour before we went and got a rope to catch her and take her to my house for some other young dogs to see. 3 dogs under a year and none of them ever walked out of that bay in over an hours time. We were real pleased with that. Got a pretty good video out of it too. All in all a good weekend and we got some pups really going the right way. I really appreciate that, and She sure has sir. She’s been a pleasure to own and hunt, and I couldn’t do enough for her to even the score when it comes to what she’s done for me. Besides all the hogs and coyotes and cows we’ve chased together, and the couple dozen pups she’s weaned and showed the way for me and friends. I’ve gone to that dog a hundred times when my head was a mess over something. Whether it’s been a solo trip to the woods or a ride in the truck or the few nights she’s spent at the foot of my bed. She’s helped me find center every time. For that, she’s been a once in a lifetime dog. I hate to think of the day she isn’t atleast around anymore, the times I have, I really haven’t been able to decide if I’ll be able to go on with the dogs. Just ain’t a way it will be the same with out her, though it would be a shame to let everything she will leave behind go to waste. There used to be a day I didn’t really respect a dog, like a good one should be. Not that I didn’t want to but I didn’t really know how or what it meant. Sketch and the late Mr.Jamie Woodward taught me how. And for the first time spoon and Misty both were there from the start of the track to the strike, right in mommas hip pocket. They had a rally going for a little till a steer that was pretty stirred up because he was on the wrong side of the fence broke em up. They put 2 boars up together after that and we got em both killed. Shot the bigger one, they all took the other maybe 200 yards and stood on his head.
Sketch rolled on a big boy after them 2 and took him about a mile and put him up. Sadly it’s a terrible spot we get beat by big hogs in there probably twice a year because you can’t get in there to the dogs. Decades old pile of bulldozed cedars in a big ring and it’s all grown back up with hard woods. Had to tone her off after he broke out of there and I had realized I lost my phone and was about out of daylight. Maybe next time.
