Rest in Peace in Meathead.
Mandi, I know you will miss him greatly, I also know Meat, I also know how thankfull he was to have you to care for him, hunt him, and appreciate him until the very end, and for that he was a very lucky dog.

Thanks Krystal.

Meaty took some bad hits on a hog last night. The bay dogs stuck with the hog, while we doctored on Meaty. About that time, Thomas and Krystal called to see if we were doing any good, and we told them about Meaty being down, and Annie and Brandy were on the hog about a mile out. They offered to bring in some extra catch dogs, so worked on Meaty while they drove through two counties to get to us. Dogs were still showing treed, so we went in with the fresh dogs, and the dogs had a dang ole sow bayed up.  I guess the boar dropped them on a sow, and they bayed her.  We got her killed,Annie rolled out, but Brandy stuck around, we checked her and saw that She had taken a hit too.  Got her to the truck, and doctored her.   Everything looked to be going okay...     Left the dogs on the box overnight, then we let them out to do their business this morning, Brandy is fine, but Meaty was peeing out of a cut in his scrotum, and one of the other bad cuts....  Rushed him to the vet, they worked on him to see if they could repair the damage. It was decided by the vets, that they could not repair him. Unfortunately, he had to be put down.

To those of you who were fortunate enough have hunted behind Meathead, then you understand how significant this loss is to us. He may have been slow and ugly, but damn he was all heart. Once he was caught, it was easier to wait for it to thunder, than it was to break him off. ;D He lived everyday to catch a hog. Never once did I hesitate to go in after a hog when Meaty was on the ground, he had your back no matter how big and bad the hog was. He was a fine teacher, when we got him, we were new to hog dogging, but we were told he would take care of us in the woods. He did just that, and he taught us what a true catch dog is...and with him gone, it leaves a huge hole in our pack...he will be buried at our place wearing his cut gear for his final journey.

Our very first hog with just our pack.

Poor dog even had to put up with having his nails painted...

Goodbye Meaty, you will be missed dearly.

Man I sure didn't want to hear that.  I was there last night and though the cuts were serious there was no way of knowing that his urethra was cut like that.  It just looked like a deep muscle cut in the back leg and and small cut in the scrotum.  I have fond memories of meaty going all the way back to when Krystal owned him and he caught the first hog I ever saw bayed in the woods.  He was a good catch dog and an even better dog, he loved people and he loved his job, he will be missed for sure.  RIP meaty.....

7-8 years old, we think...

Thanks for the kind words guys and gals.

It's times like these that makes you really appreciate your vet too! When Mandi pulled up with Meaty, he dropped what he was doing, went straight to work on him, spent quite a while working on him, then when it was determined he needed to be put down, he only charged $20.00 for the entire trip.

Thank God for good ole country vets.

Chris and Mandi I'm so sorry for your loss. My nephew and his best friend went hunting with yall one day and came home talking about a huge but sweet dog named Meathead, they thought that was the coolest name and all they could talk about was that dog. I think I have some pictures of the boys with ol Meaty I will try to post. R.I.P. Meathead.

Chris and Mandi,

He was lucky to have you two.  Most would have not done what ya'll did for him.  You gave him a good life.  I am sorry for your loss and know he is a dog that cannot be replaced in your heart.

Today has been a hard one.

Thanks for all the kind words for Meaty. I had nothing to do with his training, so I'm not tooting my own horn in saying he was one of the best catch dogs I've ever had the privilege of walking in behind. You could count on him to have your back, and he never thought twice about catching no matter how bad things got.

Meat Head has been a constant in this sport for quite a few years, and I cannot imagine the list of people who caught hogs behind him (and who cursed him if they were the ones having to pull him off the hog). I know hog dogs go down in the line of duty, and I'm not going to whine and cry because I lost mine. However, I lost a friend today that has had my back since day one. This old dog has taught me and a good many others more about hog hunting than we care to admit. I always enjoyed seeing how happy and lively he got when his vest and collars came off the truck. I never thought I would dread vesting old "Meatball", but I assure you it was tough suiting him up for the last time this afternoon while Chris prepared a spot for him under that oak tree next to my roundpen. He is in all his gear, nameplates in place so there's no question in case I don't recognize him on the other side.

Thanks to Krystal for being his guardian angel all his life, to Matt and Derrek Ensor for entrusting him to me, and thanks to all the folks who have held his lead while I climb through the fence.

Cheers
M

My heart sank when I got the text yesterday about Meathead.  He is THE dog that got my brother & I into this crazy thing called hog doggin.  He took care of us in the woods and taught us a lot about the sport as well.  One of our very first hogs caught without Krystal or Thomas or Mr. Mason there to guide us was a BIG nasty hog that was well over 300.  My brother, Matt and I, had about 10 hogs TOTAL under our belt.  Patches and Dub had the big sucker bayed up and we sent in Meathead.  He anchored the big hog like it was a shoat.  That hog to this day is the biggest that we have caught.  Every catchdog that we have ever lead through the woods has been compared to Meathead.  He was a good one.  Thanks for taking such good care of him over the years Mandy.  He will be missed.

RIP MEAT

Mandi and Chris,

Meaty was a awesome dog.  I really enjoyed him while I owned him as well.   THanks for taking such good care of him.

Maybe his skin issues were a blessing?   Had he not had them you nor Derrick would have never owned him, He would have died him MY KENNEL!

Melissa and I will miss him dearly, I always thought of him as a teddy bear more than a bulldog

Thanks again guys. His loss really couldn't be compared to losing a catch dog, and I appreciate all the prayers and well wishes. We semi retired him the last year or so, thinking that if we limited the number of hogs he was on that his chances of sticking around with me were pretty good. The idea was to get him in the woods enough to still let him think he was useful, but also being selfish in wanting an old friend to live forever. After he was gone, I felt like going on a last hunt was much more fitting for him than getting old and dying of old age without dignity. I would still change things if I could, and be just plain selfish about it.

I really want to thank all of the folks who offered to let me borrow their dogs as well. It really says a lot about the group of folks that make up this community of hunters. As it turned out, a dog I have wanted to own for quite a while came available to me on Friday, and although I would rather have had both he and meaty, a good okie friend brought my new boy to me on Saturday. I'm still pretty heartbroken over meaty, but I think tater will give me something to focus on.

I'm not sure how he will take to pink nail polish, but he sure loves banana nut bread.

Thanks again guys, I'm so proud to call you all friends.

Cheers
M

I'm so very sorry Mandi and Chris. It's just heartbreaking to read this. But you're right, Meathead got to go out doing what he loved, a catch dog to the end, and I can't think of a better goodbye for such a beloved bulldog.

Bob,

Tator hasn't left my side since he got home. He came with me to work today, and he hogged the covers last night. I have wanted him since I got to hunt with him early this year, and he is really even better than I thought. He really could not have come at a better time.
