EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Has anyone ever used or seen anyone use a weimaraner as a hog dog?  I was just wondering because they are really long legged and big lunged dogs.  I was also thinking about crossing a catahoula X weimaraner or black mouth X weimaraner.  Just a question to see what yall think.  I would really like to hear everyone's input.

I had a bmc x weimaraner for a little while. Was turning out to be a decent dog. Lot's of stamina and bottom, but rough as could be. But that may have been his age... never learned to back up yet. Unfortunately, I lost him to a train.

nice lookin dog mike i had black mouth redbone cross that looked like that i had a dog get hit buy a train to not sure how that happens but sure does wreck a good tracking collar

I raised a few in my teenage years, the gyp I had would do anything,point/retrieve quail,retreive dove,tree coon/squirrell,find and bay hogs and do competition agillity/obedience and do protection work...one of the better most vesatile dogs I ever had.I would think a hunting bred one would make a good med range find/bay dog.Very smart and active dogs.

Believe it or not, but my tracking collar and shock collar came out in good shape. :o That's how I ended up finding him.

I had two weimaraners growing up. They were wonderful dogs. We used them for bird dogs though. They have great drive and love to do it. They always have their nose on the ground. The only issue we had with them was trying to keep them looking good. We had them on a strict diet and still were overweight. However, we did live in the city and they didnt get to go hunting except during dove season, so that was part of it. but we found them to be great companions and loved to go huntin. I never thought about as a hog dog, but id like to see what they would do.

I have not seen a Weimeraner on hogs but have heard of some good ones...They were bred to be all purpose dogs as well as for hog dogs...the working type are about perfect built in my opinion...

JP...I also had a good up and comer get run over by a train...demolished the tracking collar as well...only reason I knew the train got him was that my hunting partner was a RR engineer and he said he didn't like the train blasting his horn 3 times in the middle of nowhere...usually means someone or an animal is on the tracks as the train is moving through...

As a teen we used them on nutria,marsh rabbits but ever so often they would run a hog

I have one and he does a good job for me. He is fast and good at stopping a runner. The only thing about him I don't like is that he isn't as shifty as my other dogs

Seen them crossed with plott used on bear. Good on the ground not very strong on the tree.They would run a hog but was never given the chance much.
