Title: biscuit success! Post by: aladatrot on November 19, 2009, 02:51:09 pm I had nothing to do this afternoon, so I decided to fire up the dutch oven and make biscuits while I was preparing a couple loaves of bread. I started my coals, preheated the oven, and popped in a $1 can of buttermilk cheater biscuits. I'm happy to announce that the biscuits turned out okay! They are a shade more brown than golden, but are a huge success given my previous failure at cobbler. The catchdog can rest assured he won't need to put away the evidence, these are fit for people to eat.
I'm going to get the biscuit thing down pat before I go trying other stuff. My buttermilk yeast dough is rising right now, but it will be baked in the regular oven today. I'll get there! Post by: matt_aggie04 on November 19, 2009, 03:29:08 pm You need to fire that cooker pit behind Tater up!
Title: Re: biscuit success! Post by: aladatrot on November 19, 2009, 03:41:35 pm I have been collecting a little pile of trash wood by that fire pit. I make my "campfires" in there and also have been using it to hold my extra coals in case the oven needs a few more or a few less. We haven't cooked on that pit since feb I think, but it sure makes a nice visiting fire. Chris uses his smoker pit for our barbeque meats.

Title: Re: biscuit success! Post by: Cull Buck on November 19, 2009, 04:22:07 pm I have an absolute weakness for coffee and some good biscuits. My mouth is watering......
Title: Re: biscuit success! Post by: craig on November 19, 2009, 07:04:54 pm there you go, now break out the bisquck and make some cathead's
you might try setting the oven in the firepit with out the pan and just slide the coals under the oven , you could have all the extra coals around the outside and ad if needed. that would put it at a good working height too you got a good looking helper ;) Title: Re: biscuit success! Post by: buddybegone on November 19, 2009, 09:05:40 pm more likely tater guarding to keep chris away lol mandy how about a call when you put on the korn bread and red beans.
Title: Re: biscuit success! Post by: slimpickins on November 20, 2009, 07:32:26 am There ya go, funny thing is that those biscuits are 100% spot on how I do mine, PERFECT. Now you've got a good idea about how much heat top and bottom, that's the first and hardest step.
Title: Re: biscuit success! Post by: aladatrot on November 20, 2009, 09:07:18 am Gonna try biscuits again so I know it wasn't a fluke. Then I may try craig's camp potatoes or mike's rabbit stew. I need to scope out the local ag barn first to make sure there are no cameras >:D j/k Chris won't eat a squirrel or a rabbit, so I may be cooking for just tater and I. I ruined a roast chicken last night in the cheater oven. Came out dry because I misread the directions. Cooked it for 1.5 hours and the meat thermo said it was hot enough. Cut into it and it was pink. Tried to get the bag closed on it and baked another hour, but it was tougher than boot leather. Good thing chris made some killer mashed potatoes.
