EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

Went too a good spot last night with a friend that has been catching a bunch of big boars! had a bay  within twenty minutes so we sent the bulldogs to em and never herd any squeeling or grunting? thought it might be a good one went in some real thick plum thickets and seen the dogs faces covered in porcupine quills got the dogs off and had 4 dogs just covered in them gave them a shot of ace and pulled quills till 3 this morning! sure was a good way too ruin the hunt! any one else ever had this happpen?

That is a real buzz kill, aint it? Pulling quills sucks!

I had that same thing happen a while back, had a bay, sent the cd, before I could get half way there the cd came running up to me with a mouthful of quills, then 3 of 4 dogs came by, all had a noseful. My lacy was yelping, barking, and growling. Get there and she is throwing up in the air and catching it! Pulled quills til the sun came up & then had to take her to the vet to get the ones way sown her throat! She was never very catchy at all, but on the way outta the ranch we caught a small boar and when my son and I walked up she was caught, quills and all!!!

I'm pretty sure they are the worst thing you can come across in the woods! What possess a dog to try and catch something that looks like they do will always amaze me...

our dogs didnt learn a lesson it made them hate them more!. and lonewolf we caught three in Oklahome in two nights this week!

dang that stinks. how do you pull those things, where would you even start?

I figured that but are they barbed, do you have to try to bend and push them through or do they come straight out?

If they are in a cheek or lip you might be able to push it through, but usually you have to pull them out the way they came in.  I hate porky's with a passion, they're no good. They are hell on wheels with a calf or a foal. 

?????  You mean you don't have them where you hunt in Oklahoma.  We caught 4 in one night one time.  We've caught so many freakin' porcupines that it's hard to believe our dogs will still hit them, but they will...... every single time. >:(

T-Bob they have little bitty barbs like a fish hook and found the easiest way too pull them is with pliers and too jerk them straight out

Jay has had this happen a couple of times, it sucks and yes does ruin a hunt. We did the same thing pulled them all out took us all night til wee hours in the morning....

The hardest ones too get out are the ones deep in the roof of the dogs mouth!  :'(

an old timer once told me to paint the ends of the quills with turpentine , then cut the ends off , the n pull em . it lets the pressure off and they come out easier .

Seems like I heard that turpentine thing somewhere.  Ive. Only seen one in my life, del rio last year spring turkey season and I didn't get near it.  I don't think we have them down here in brazoria county, but my dogs love to get stupid on skunks. >:(

 That does look very painfull . One time I was riding  bikes around Doss and almost hit one crossing the road . I can't imagine hitting one of those at 60 mph.

That sux we just got a place thats covered in em..  :(

Ill just say that all of our dogs are now porcupine broke and dont want anything do with one anymore....have spent plenty of night pullin quills out....and it does just ruin a hunt

i have had this happen and I took one of the dogs to that same place it happen and he stayed on pigs. hope the dogs are ok.
