Post by: cward on January 02, 2010, 05:09:56 pm
I am just curious to what you guys think!!! Do you thing you can breed a straight ear catchdog? If so what cross or straight breed dog and how many years of line breeding  or crossing will it take?? I pesonally will not tie up my yard to breed straight catchdogs but I have been crossing with friends for a long time!!!!

That is just a trait. Why would you not be able to breed for it? Figure out where it coming from and just like anything else you work towards building from there

same thing what you are talking about the dog being calm sitting there while tying a hog? It is an intellegence thing.

I don't think that is that much to expect .

Krystal what I am saying is we try to breed the brains in are catch dogs more than the catch on the ear!!!Most all of them are ear dogs but do catch wild some times!! Seen hog meet them head on and them catch on the nose!!!

Most catch dogs that I have caught hogs behind are pretty wound up and cain't get them to handle know I hear you got one and I  know of other people that have them!!! But there are higher percent that are straight catch with know handle we cross them  for brains!!

I had a straight ear dog that I breed to a straight ear dog and a pup caught real wild we would move him to an ear and he would still always catch wild but handle like a champ!! So I got ride of that pup and raised some more from a different cross but same dad but different bitch these pups are catching straight ear with the brains!!!!

Not saying its to much to ask but been hunting along time and seen less handle on catchdogs than any dog when I think that should be the dog that should handle the best!!

The picture of the dogs is son-dad- grandpaw!! The red dog is the dad of the big lepoard   the big lep dog is the dad of the small lep dog!!

Chance, I am not saying by any means I got it all figured out, cause there is always more for me to learn.
But I will agree BRAINS first, There are alot of kinds of brains, and a calmer, less hyper dog, can use what brain it has got, alot better than a wound-up one.
I got a few very calm quiet catch dogs, they are all out of the same bloodline, so I feel it is in the gene pool along with the "on the ear".
I think you met Thomas' Cotton dog, and that is a EAR ONLY as they come. Some of the others from these breeding are pretty offended if they can't get an ear and sulk, but will take another grip. We own that dogs parents and friends of our have the grandpups and great grandpups. With an outcross you will have different traits jump out, and the inline breeding has produced very similiar dogs some almost too calm.

I believe the temperment of hyper, controlable, or calm is what will allow the brain to get a chance to work or not. Alot of levels to be on, I like a good catchdog no matter the breed, but have a hard time finding exactly what I want and consider the upmost importance in a dog that catches, the way it conducts itself and handles, Brains &  Demeanor, As stated many many times on here, a dog that will catch a hog is easy to find, but to have one be all things and catch a hog, now thats something worth having, and won't be a dime a dozen.

But thats another topic all together
