Title: Is zemectrin gold safe for pups
Post by: BIG BEN on January 06, 2010, 06:32:18 pm
I have been looking at the threads in the past about zimectrin gold and have not found any info about using it on pups. I have 4 pups from 3-4 months old and was wondering if it is safe to use it on them. If so what dose and how often?

I do use very small doses of Ivermectin in young pups but I would be pretty careful with it. I would also use Equimax, instead of Zimecterin Gold, if I were dead set on using an Ivermectin/Praziquantel paste on pups. That way the dose of Ivermectin is minimized while the Praziquantel is maximized.

Zimecterin gold is 1.55% Ivermectin and 7.75% praziquantel.
Equimax paste is 1.87% Ivermectin 14.03% Praziquantel

Also, there is no measurable proper dose and getting a very small dose will be difficult. I only give a Lima Bean size squirt to my 40lb dogs. How do you parse that down for a 3 month old pup?

That being said, I do not use either of those on pups. I use Valbasin with a VERY small dose of Ivermectin mixed in it. Even then I only give a couple of drops to pups so they end up getting a does of Ivermectin so small that it is not even measurable.

I guess that the short answer is..... I wouldnt do it.

Steve

After they are 12 weeks, which yours are, it is fine.  I have done it plenty before as a precautionary wormer.  I have never had issues with it once they were 12 weeks.  Good luck
