Title: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Beejay on February 04, 2010, 04:06:37 pm I am looking for anyone who has hunted with, or knows of the Winchester dog owned by Coonasscur. For those who have hunted with it, what is your opinion and where can this bloodline be found.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Circle C on February 04, 2010, 04:08:18 pm I have never hunted with Winchester, but I own a daughter of his, from when he was bred to Tweety.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Circle C on February 04, 2010, 04:09:34 pm In addition, Mike, Clay, John, and Myself all have some grandpups of Winchester.
There is a link discussing them, I will try to pull it up. Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Circle C on February 04, 2010, 04:11:10 pm http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/index.php?topic=3372.0

Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Circle C on February 04, 2010, 04:43:23 pm Sorry Ray,
I forget and call him John's dog... Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: John on February 04, 2010, 04:44:52 pm it alright ;)
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Mike on February 04, 2010, 05:20:26 pm PM Uglydog, I believe Winchester was born in her yard and was owned by a good friend of hers before Travis bought him. Her friend also owned my Tweety dog... all the Winchester/Tweety pups are making good and exceptional dogs from what I've seen and heard.
I'm sure Uglydog will reply here when she reads it. Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: uglydog on February 04, 2010, 05:26:51 pm Circle C, - Beejay had been hunting with Huey, another half brother to Winchester out of Bell, so he may interested in knowing the whole lineage too.
Here is a few more for anybody that cares to know, some I can't remember but may pop into my head later. Huey was same litter as Spice, Lemon, Rusty, 2nd litter Gator, Jake, Monkey was exact same cross but first litter Winchester, Remington, Colt, Trigger were out of my male dog Pistol & Bell, but whelped on the Hilscher yard. but I knew and hunted with most of those pups for several years before Mike H. sold all them to Mr.Mason Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Hogboy on February 04, 2010, 05:39:57 pm I have hunted with Winney many times, but it was several years ago when Mike H still had him. He was a good producer and and excellent strike dog. I am not saying he was without fault but he could definitely get the job done. I have followed him a many of a mile to a bay.
Winney is out of Pistol and Bell. Krystal has all of the lineage on Pistol and I think most of it on Bell. Both were considered east texas brindle curs I guess. Bell sired several very good dogs. She was mouthy and some of her pups got mouthy at times. Pistol made his mark as a pen dog and could get a little rough. Any grit in this line comes from him. Most of the pups that folks have out of Winney are off of Tweety. Tweety is a catahoula from Cowdog Stock. Her and her sister will flat out go and both a pretty closed mouth, cover lots of miles and will stick with one. I only hunted with these pups a few times, but they were like a bunch of wild indians and would bay the hair of of anything when they were young. I have heard alot of good stories on how they turned out. Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Mike on February 04, 2010, 05:47:15 pm Tweety is a catahoula from Cowdog Stock. Her and her sister will flat out go and both a pretty closed mouth, cover lots of miles and will stick with one. ...and they say you can't catch hogs with catahoulas! :o :o :o Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Beejay on February 04, 2010, 05:50:24 pm Sure wish I would have known this before Huey passed. I would have tried to breed something to him.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Beejay on February 04, 2010, 06:20:54 pm CircleC, whats your Stryker dog from. He is built right.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Clay on February 04, 2010, 06:27:21 pm Stryker is mikes pup out of that line
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Beejay on February 04, 2010, 06:29:41 pm He's off Tweety?
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Circle C on February 04, 2010, 06:33:36 pm mike's stryker is out of brandy and by a plott cur cross. Brandy is a tweety winchester pup.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Mike on February 04, 2010, 06:36:00 pm Striker is a Tweety/Winchester grandson... out of Circle C's Brandy dog.
All the Tweety/Winchester pups came out looking identical to Tweety. The two male grandsons I have, one looks like Tweety and the other like Winchester. So far we're are pleased on how they are turning out. Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 04, 2010, 06:36:31 pm I would sure like to know more about where Ruby and Tweety came from, I owned Tweety for a short time, bought her from Mr. Mason and hunter her for about 6 months and then and sold her to Mike which in hind sight was a mistake with her becoming famous and all ;D I have never seen pictures of Ruby but I would like to, I would also love some info on where she came from and if there were any more siblings out there or parents were still alive etc, that seems to be where she and Ruby begin and end, with some old cowboy that no one knows how to contact or anything about his dogs. Judging by the way Tweety is put together and the offspring that she has produced I would pay good money to see her parents and grandparents. Which brings us full circle in this conversation....when are you gonna breed Tweety Mike, you still owe me some pups ;)
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Mike on February 04, 2010, 06:43:41 pm Matt, I sure like to know more of her background also... no one seems to know much about it.
Soon as she comes in... i'm curious to which side the pups throw to. ;D Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Mike on February 04, 2010, 06:45:24 pm Sure wish I would have known this before Huey passed. I would have tried to breed something to him. Beejay, how did Huey hunt? Do you know which male dog he was out of? Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 04, 2010, 06:47:18 pm I am gonna hold you to it this time, she has only come in about three or four times since I sold her to you know haha j/k
You got those pups going good enough to let grandma take a welping vacation I think ;) Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Beejay on February 04, 2010, 06:50:47 pm Honestly, he wasn't the best I've seen. He didn't work that hard, but once he picked up a track, get ready to run. I figured he was just slower from being old, but uglydog said he was one of the weaker dogs out of the breedings. Uglydog had got me up to speed on these dogs, his dam was Bell, but I don't know who the sire was.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: uglydog on February 04, 2010, 06:59:41 pm I will see if I can find Mr. Poppies number and call him, he gave Tweety to Hilscher at about 6-8 months old if I remember correctly, and then sent Ruby to him also a month or two later. He got them from lady that raised Catahoulas, they did not fire on cattle on the first chance so he sent them to Hilscher. Mr. Poppy is hard to talk to somedays and other days he is friendly fella, I guess it just depends on how many cows he has messed with that day.
Bells first two litters will have to ask Hilscher the guy/stud dogs name, But I do remember him to be a brindle cur dog that was 1/4 pit. The litter that Fatboy was out was a single survivor pup, that went back to a dog from ColdSpring/Woodville that may have also been Winfrey type dog. I do know Travis spent alot of time talking to Hilscher and got it all mapped out and even got in touch with some of the kinfolk that have that same line. Bell was a hunting fool, but we always called her a meat hunter, Mikes wife who got her from Coldspring area as a pup, says the boys in east texas gotta put food on the table. I guess if I was hungry enough I would eat some of the kinds of Meat critters she would bay up. She was a loose baying dog on hogs that had alot of bottom, way too much for my liking. Funny thing was she would run loose at the house and as soon as the pups could go with her she was taking them to the creek bottom and hunting with the pups. Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: mankinb on February 04, 2010, 09:01:05 pm I can not believe we did not get not one pic. out of all of this. Come on guys put some up. Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Mike on February 04, 2010, 09:12:03 pm I can not believe we did not get not one pic. out of all of this. Come on guys put some up. Bunch of pics here...http://www.easttexashogdoggers.com/forum/index.php?topic=3372.0 Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Hogboy on February 04, 2010, 11:13:31 pm If I remember correctly Huey was a little rougher than most of the other dogs Mike had. He was not catchy, but would put teeth on a hog to stop it.
Rusty and Gator were the dogs out of Bell that were Mike H's pride and joy. They would flat out go. And there were a couple of nights we waited on those two dogs for hours. Bell had a heck of a nose but tended to use it to find anything. And like I said she could get mouthy. Funny that Krystal mentioned it, because Bell personally made Winney and Remington (not sure about the others). Mike would let the pups run loose and when Bell would be out of her kennel for any length of time she would take them hunting. It was not unually to pull up to Mike's and him say the dogs had something bayed in the creek. LOL As far as Tweety and Ruby go ...... I will see Hilscher this weekend and will pick his brain a little more. If Krystal can talk to Mr. Poppy it would proably be the best. I might be able to talk to one of his grandkids too. Matt I will try and remember to get a picture of Ruby this weekend. RJB Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: heat on February 05, 2010, 08:25:00 am If you can let a whole litter of pups run loose you better. If 1/2 of them get mashed on the highway you are still money ahead on the other 1/2. I can remember raising pups running loose and them running rabbits and treeing squirrels at 4 to 5 months old in th middle of the summer time. If a dog can run a riabbit and run it right without loosing it....there is no creature on this earth that can get away from it.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Hogboy on February 05, 2010, 02:17:41 pm Yeah, his motto was it is easier to break them off of stuff than it was to get them to hunt.
Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Circle C on February 05, 2010, 02:25:02 pm Quote Yeah, his motto was it is easier to break them off of stuff than it was to get them to hunt. Years later and we're still breaking them off unwanted game. That's why I call them Crock Pot Curs...turn em out, they'll bay something for your pot. Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: Hogboy on February 05, 2010, 10:59:44 pm Chris, I know what you mean. Trust me.
The funny thing about it is ya'll talk about one dogs affinity for skunks. Well her sister has the same exact problem. RJB Title: Re: Info on Winchester dog Post by: uglydog on February 09, 2010, 08:33:28 pm took me awhile but I found some the pics,
