Title: Rough hunt 2.7.10
Post by: Noah on February 07, 2010, 03:40:36 pm
Been workin' too much to make time to hunt, but slid out this morning for a while.  Turned Shine and Chub out first, Shine rolled out as if she had x-ray goggles on, and could see the first hog all the way through on the other side of the swamp... ol' Ellie used to get that same glazed over look in her eye when she had figured a track out... neat to see Shine in the same light...

She ran hard into a bottom  and bayed up as perty as you could ask... until Chub got there and tried the hog, he broke, they bayed a hundred yds later... but this time Chub got a good grip... and paid for it... got the hog handled, and the dog back to the truck, and took a few shots before heading on.

Shine truly is a joy to hunt with, just wish she wouldn't help with the catch like she does... just too stressful worrying about her....

Hunted Shine by herself next, Snappa just tends to get her too catchy when they run together.... So we brought Snappa on a lead just in case, and eased into the never-ending swamp on the back side of this property.  After a short while Shine jumped a good one in some heavy palmettos and the two rolled out deep.  We tracked and tried to stay close but she was way ahead of us and we just couldn't seem to catch back up.  As we were going along two hogs got up and gave their position away by the rustling palmetto branches... sent Snapps in and she jumped and also pulled out deep...

After a short while I could tell Shine and Snapp had joined up and were heading North fast... not good.   Those two are capable and willing to catch any hog I've ever seen.... and I've never seen the two bay any hog when run together.... So, we started jogging to catch up... miles later old Mack called on the cell and said he could hear both dogs bayed hard deeep in the swamp and was going to them(by himself :-\).

We finally made it to our truck about 20 minutes later and hauled but to where Mack was, took another 15 min to get in to them.... still baying hard.... must be a good'n :o ;D  Slowed down when I got close and eased in, heard the hog hit a dog, break, then they bayed again 15yds away... sent A.J. and Jetta, heard the fight and went in to find this bugger... which, if not for Lee, I'm not too sure if I'd ever been able to get flipped....

Big barr for around these parts... this fat sucker ran like a deer, made several miles worth of loops before they got him shut down.

Shine's the only one that came out without a scratch, looks like she's all I'm gonna have to hunt with for a while...

Noah, I know how you feel we had one of our best dogs meet us 50 yards from the bay yesterday with 8" of gut hanging out! after three and a half hr surgery he might live ??? We will be hurt without him but some of the things that make him great are some of the things that put him in jeaprody. Good luck with your team and those are some nice hogs.

Yep... about had enough of these head-catchy dogs... just a matter of time before somethin' bad happens.  Eventually, I'd like to have nothing but bay dogs, that WILL NOT help with the catch... some day....

Hope yours heals up quick

Glad to see you got a chance to hit the woods after working so much here lately. Looks like your time off from hunting allowed the hogs to grow a little..... ;D

Two good toothy hogs, sounds like a good hunt!

That was a really nice barr. I have a good friend that has a female dog that looks just like Shine. She is cream colored with spotted ears, also the mother to my Foot dog. Her name is Lil, I think that she is bmc crossed with catahoula.

Good deal... I "saw the light" several years back. ;D

Good barr hog!

Thanks yall, right now it looks more like a recovery ward than a family room....thank God for a loving wife ;)   Chub looks like she may pull through, Snapps is hanging in the balance, she took some hard shots to the body after helping catch with the CD's.

Shine is 1/4 English pointer x 3/4 Florida cur, just a really fun dog.

I can never remember even though I have hunted with them. Is Chubs or Snapper the black dog??

Hope they recover for you . Dave has been asking about going hunting, we have hogs to catch before turkey season!!

We are going Tues & Wed night, Lord willing and the creek don't rise. Will let you know how we do...if we don't get rained out.

Snapper is the black gyp.  Chub's the white one, full sister to Shiner.  They both have served well for me, just not what I want to produce in the future... there's smarter/safer ways to do what they do.

Shine's the only one with any sense, when she's out by herself I can actually relax and walk to the bay.... strange sensation ;D

Hope yall put it to 'em Mark!  I want to hear some stories of those pups of yours turnin' on in the woods!!!

I hope Snapper pulls through for you.I liked her when you hunted with Dave and I that day.She held up good during the heat, which is something my dogs don't do well. Real light footed and athletic too. Thats the kind I like....... ;D

You would REALLY have liked Spur on the hunt where we caught that barr. He bayed 3 of the 5 hogs we caught that night , by himself, and never caught the first one...even after the other dogs caught.....so, I may have to feed him a while longer.......... :o The other guys think I am crazy because I quit putting a cut collar on him. If he gets cut it isn't going to be because he was trying to catch!!

I'd be happy to never put a cut collar on another dog ever again ;D      Maybe some day, before I die, I'll have a pack of dogs that I can actually relax while hunting with.... ;D

I have my fingers crossed (thats why I am typing slow.... :o) that my two pups won't be catchy. As long as I am careful and don't hunt them with catchy dogs I HOPE they will bay more than catch. But I need to put them in the woods to see.....

We are going to have a pile of dogs (Chris, Wade, Lynel and I will have dogs) so I doubt I will even take them this week. Rather start them late than start them wrong......but I DO need to start hunting them. They are getting bigger and bigger.....a lot bigger than I had hoped they would get. I want a 50-55 lb athletic dog. These pups will be 65 lbs grown and are females. I like them so far, just need to see what they will do on a hog.
