Title: lost Post by: digemdown on February 07, 2010, 05:07:32 pm I learned my lesson this weekend on running a garmin collar. I have lost my best dog, Booger, in the woods this weekend. Something weird happened. He ran hogs for a little over two miles, stopped and ran his track back in, he got to a certain point and I went to him. The garmin showed me to be about 100 yards from him it showed him treed and in a sitting position and all of the sudden lost signal. Never picked up signal again and havent seen Booger since yesterday about 10:30 am. I have searched the woods following his tracks and nothing. The garmin in my eyes now is a pos! I charged the collar over night and it had a full charge on it. Its like he just disappeared.

Title: Re: lost Post by: ETHHunters on February 07, 2010, 07:10:40 pm Mason he wasnt around any water was he. Sounds just like what happened when I lost my bulldog last fall. Found him in a creek. Hope you find him!
Title: Re: lost Post by: Mike on February 07, 2010, 07:17:26 pm Mason, I sure hate to hear that and I hope you find him.
Fella's i've been preaching this all along... don't trust the Garmin, put a radio collar on for insurance. Title: Re: lost Post by: digemdown on February 07, 2010, 08:37:34 pm ETH he was around creeks and sleughs the last place i had him was right on the creek and i checked all down it and under the drifts no blood nowhere nothing just a missing booger im sick to my stomach .i had nightmares all night last night .the garmin is a cool tool but it let me down real fast .
Title: Re: lost Post by: daisydog on February 07, 2010, 08:48:46 pm i had a missing booger once but found it later in a used hanky have you checked there mason
Title: Re: lost Post by: raider54 on February 07, 2010, 08:56:38 pm just to encourage you a bit, back in the old days before tracking systems, all we had was our Phone number on the collar! Ive been doggin for 30 years and Ive never lost a dog. If he is alive he will show up.
Title: Re: lost Post by: ETHHunters on February 08, 2010, 07:34:31 am You may have already done this but I would go back to the last place you had him and zoom in as far as you can. Get as near to the exact spot as possible. It sure sounds possible he could be in the water.
Title: Re: lost Post by: ktchemwcurs on February 08, 2010, 09:00:17 am I hope you find him, we have not had any trouble yet, but I am still going to run both collars.
Title: Re: lost Post by: USHOG on February 08, 2010, 09:10:30 am Have you checked the local vet, Animal control, pound? I lost a dog last week and it was the vet who got us the information to find him.
Where was he lost at? Do you have a picture? Title: Re: lost Post by: hoghunterdfw on February 08, 2010, 12:53:33 pm man that sucks. hope you find him soon. garmins are far from perfect, but antennas on collars break from time to time, Ive even seen it happen on radio collars. hopefully someone finds him and calls you.
Title: Re: lost Post by: Cajunjag on February 08, 2010, 01:36:54 pm Not trying to make things worse, but I just found this post. Up until 2 months ago, I never used any tracking collars. I bought a Garmin Astro unit and two collars and so did my bro-n-law. This past Saturday, we were training pups in a 5 acre bay pen. Not sure what happened, but one of his collars just stopped working, much like what is described here. I was tracking all the dogs on my unit, as he was doing the same. We were using them to see what dog was where and which one was out hunting the other, not that we needed them in a pen.
His dog Pancho just went dead, no warning, nothing out of the ordinary - just stopped transmitting. Once we were back at the truck, we tried to re-establish communications with the collar to no avail. We had to delete the collar from the dog list, then reconnect to it before it started working again. It worked fine after that, but it was very strange. Not sure how much I will trust it out in the woods! Title: Re: lost Post by: redneckrambo96 on February 08, 2010, 01:45:20 pm hope you find him
Title: Re: lost Post by: digemdown on February 08, 2010, 08:18:16 pm I think i got a lead on what happened to booger. I went to a guys house today where booger was last on the garim and the guy was real nervous and had alot to say like out of nowhere "I didnt shoot your dog" and "my neighbor may have him she is known to steal dogs and not give them back and thinks hog hunting is cruel" thats just a couple of things he said but right when I lost communication I had the sitting dog icon pop up and then the tree icon popped up and then I lost communication like bam bam bam. What I think is that this ol boy called my dog up to him, Booger sat down looked up at him while he was either turning the collar off or taking it off and throwing it in the creek. I called the sherriffs deputy cuz I had so much suspicion about this guy and because the Garmin did what it did. They should go and do an investigation sometime this week. It was weird to begin with and it is just getting weirder, but I'am starting to put two and two together and I will not quit until I found out what happened to him. Keep your eyes out and ears open for a hog huntin dobberman. Thanks

Title: Re: lost Post by: Cajunjag on February 09, 2010, 10:37:51 am Mason,
Hope you get some answers to the mystery, but this may help. I have a map file downloaded to my Garmin that is very, very detailed. It will show things like roads, creeks, elevations and so on. If you have this on your unit, you can download your last hunt to a computer showing exactly where you lost contact with your dog. I bet this guy did something and either turned the collar off or destroyed it. This may be enough to give to the Sheriff's Department to question the guy. I know for a fact in Louisiana and man has the right to go get his dog on someone else's property (unarmed) and people that have shot dogs in the past have had charges against them w/ restitution. It has cost some people some big money. I know this information doesn't bring your dog back right now, but it may help. I download all my hunts to my laptop to see where the dogs ran, what did the hog do, etc.etc.... I also use it as a reference for the next time I hunt an area. good luck on finding your dog cajunjag thats cool Title: Re: lost Post by: digemdown on February 09, 2010, 07:22:11 pm Cajunjag I appreciate you trying to help. I do have the topical map on my Garmin. I have zoomed in and the last place my dog was shows to be on this mans property. An investigator from the County met me over there today. The man invited us into his home and to sit at his kitchen table and then got irate, nervous as hell, burping, not sitting still and started talking about three different water wales out of the blue like he knew something or he did something. I will go check them tomorrow with a gafflin hook, rope and anchor. The guy said that he checked the two wales around him, but said there was one he didnt check up the road almost like he was directing me to that one. The investigator really did not impress me almost like he was scared of this guy. Thanks again everyone, I will keep you posted.
