Title: Another Good Dog Down! FRED UPDATE
Post by: raider54 on February 07, 2010, 05:23:14 pm
Some of you may know that Scott, Phillip, and myself bought a dog named Fred off Jeremy, the same guy I bought Clay off of. Fred was Jeremy's #1 dog. and I will tell you he is a nice dog. He and Clay bayed about a mile apart yesterday but Fred was closest to us so we went to him first both had been bayed a long time. We had some young dogs that made it to Fred and were baying hard and solid. We had not yet let the CD's loose, the hog was bayed in the open woods so we wanted to see the dogs baying so as we closed in on the bay, Fred left the bay and came out to us. I was very shocked to see him quit like this. What I didnt know was that on his opposite side he had 8 to 10 inches of gut hanging out. we Immediately cut the CD's loose, the hog broke, and Zig bayed it about 900yds to the west. Bailey and Russell went to round up the CD's and go on to the bay. Myself, Phillip, and Scott got Fred to the Ground and began working on him. I could not get the guts back inbecause it was a very small hole they came out of so I opened him up a little more and got the guts back inside. Scott took off one of his shirts and began making wraps, Phillip applied wraps, and Scott rushed him to the Vet. After a nearly 4 hour surgery the doc repared a torn diafram, cleansed all his bowels, and closed him back up. Now the doc believes the only way he will die from this would be an infection so he is going to keep him for a week or two to be sure and stay on top of the needs of this great dog. I need not tell many of you doggers how expensive this incident will turn out to be. Let me say this-I believe if you cant afford to feed them Good Food, Give them a warm, dry place to sleep, or a trip to the DR. when they are sick or injured, Then you cant afford to own them!

Just incase anyone is wondering, yes we did catch the hog they were baying we know that because we saw it at the bay but it wasnt the hog that wrecked Fred because it had no teeth. About #140 Boar who is not a Boar anymore ;D. All we can figure is there must have been a group of them that moved out before we got there. We do hope to send Fred and Clay back in to find this bad hog when Fred recovers, Max and Stroke will give him some PAYBACK!!!!

Raider54,
I thoroughly agree. To some people dogs are just dogs and maybe so, but I have been raised with the belief that if you are asking a dog to work for you then you are obligated to offer everything that that animal needs to fulfill that desire you ask of them. Supply good food, clean water, a good vaccination and worming regime, warm dry place to sleep and medical attention should the need arise and watch that animal do what they can to please you, up to and unfortuantely sometimes to their detriment. Here is to a sound and speedy recovery for Fred.

x2 - I cant stand to watch someone do that to a dog, if you expect him to work for you then you should respect him enough to help him when he needs it.  Hope he heals quickly with no complications!

I know what you are talking about. I had a buddy of mine get his good dog cut up bad 2 weeks ago. He told the vet to do what he had 2 do to save him no matter what it cost. This was on a sunday so there was an emergency bill to add in also. I saw my buddy ride in the back of the truck 18 miles in 40 degree weather in his under wear holding a vein closed to keep the dog from bleeding out. He is taking the dog to the vet in the morning and they might have to take his back leg off due to infection setting in.

The vet initionally told us he would need to keep Fred for a week until he gets his appetite back, well he called this morning and said we could come get him tomorrow. He says he was up running around and eating him out of house and home. The doc was very impressed at how rapidly he is recovering. We look forward to getting Fred back where he belongs. IN THE WOODS

Vets are always underestimating the heart of a good hog dog!!!!

Glad to hear it Rowdy!

I think he'll do well. As long as the vet cleaned the dogs bowels and checked the for punctures or cuts and repaired them, he should do fine with antibotics. He is right though, fighting the infection can be worse than all of it. A lot of people stick the guts back inside and stitch a dog up and think the dog will be peachy later. A week or two later, the dog becomes septic and dies. You did the right thing! Very expensive, but a dog like that will be worth the time and money

best wishes to you and fred.

I hope your dog is doing better. We have a vet in Vidor that hates hog hunters and you will have to motgage your house to pay the bill. There is a vet in Buna that will do the job for 100$ that the guy in Vidor would charge 1,000.My wife still takes our house dog to this guy and it burns me up.

Been following along on this thread and am real happy your dog is doing so well. I don't think I would have let that hog loose to do it again though. Would worry about running up against him again and finding him 100lbs heavier and 100% meaner. I like things stacked in my favor as best as I can arrange it.   John   Oops sorry I didn't read the post well enough and thought you barred and let go the dog wrecker. My mistake.  John

Guys just an update on old FRED, Scott picked him up this morning and Phillip fixed him a nice dry place on his front porch out of the weather. He is doing very well. Phillip says he is very energetic and acts like he is ready to go. We will need to keep him secure for at least a month maybe more. We certainly appreciate the concern and kind words of our fellow hog hunters. We also look forward to meeting and hunting with many more of you in the near future.  Paul

I have read a number of times on ETHD where people are talking about going to the emergency vet clinic.   I am assuming that y'alls vets will not come out in the middle of the night to work on a dog? Are y'all using small animal vets, or do y'all use a clinic that handle both small and large animals?

Y'all should try Dr. Spangler in Farmersville.  I had him come out after hours, did a blood transfusion and surgery, keep the dog overnight.  It was only like $240.   Dog still died but I knew he was gonna anyways.
