Post by: catchinpigs on February 12, 2010, 01:53:56 pm
Can a dog pick up a scent in the snow or would it be like hunting in the rain.

We went huntn 3 weeks ago in the snow and they did fine. Made it a little more difficult but they still found hogs. Its also easier to spot fresh sign.

My dogs do alright in southeast TX in a slight drizzle but when we had all that snow up in the panhandle I was throwing my dogs out on hogs under feeders and they couldnt run them. They didnt even act like they could smell them. That was the first time they had ever hunted in it so I gave them a break.

Here is the deal with snow. If the temp stays constant and does not move up much so the snow melts it will hold the sent for a long time.  If the snow is melting it is just like rain.  I am from Alaska and up in the north west and when we hunted Lions with dogs in WA,ID and MT cold temps with fresh snow was easy pickens! Snow that was melting was always hard on the dogs.

I hunt in the snow alot here in Missouri, the dogs can still wind them hogs just the same & can trail just as well to if
the conditions are right.A wet melting snow is harder for the dogs to work than a colder dry snow. The hogs around
here usually lay tight for a couple of days after a good snow, but you will always know if the sign is fresh.

The snow was about 8in. here yeserday. We went and my male parker dog struck pretty quick, didn't act like the snow bothered him at all. We caught a sow about 130lbs.

The only experience I have with dogging in the snow is rabbit hunting.

I loved it when it snowed. As a kid it made me feel like the big game houndsman I read about in Field & Stream magazine! ;D

Those beagles never had a problem with lighting a fire under a rabbits a$$ in any kind of snow!
