They are good bikes and are built in Canada.

I had one...I liked it, but it was expensive to maintain.  I own a Can Am now.  The most powerful, best handling, and toughest ATV I've ever owned.  Buy a Can Am.  If you can't...buy a Bombie...

Can Am and Bombardier are the same thing. I dont own one ( and never will ) but i know a few people that do, and all of them have had problems. They are kind of like Dodges, great when they are brand new, but dont hold up very long.  ;D I have a 2008 yamaha grizzly 700 FI w/ powersteering. I bought it brand new, and the only problem i have had is a seam on the radiator busted, but warranty covered it. It has about 1000 miles on it, and still runs great. I used to have a Grizzly 660, and they are nice too, but the way they redesigned the newer models blows out the 660. JMO  ;)

Thanks for the info y'all.....I am still undecided on it,I talked to two different atv mechanics and they told me the rotax (sp) motor was very durable but they did cost a bit to maintain.

The one I am looking at is a 2006 outlander max 400 w/the two seats.

Bryant,

If I was in the market for a solid, dependable four wheeler today I would search high and low for a early to mid 90's Honda 300 4x4.  You can still find them in good condition, and you just about cannot tear them up.

Something like this.

I see the 420 Rancher has been mentioned, it has great acceleration, but it has a soft rear suspension.  I say if you are going to drop the coin on a Rancher 420, spend a couple bucks more and upgrade to a Foreman. They are built to work, and can easily handle a dog rack on the rear.

I have a foreman 500. My last was a foreman 450. Both great bikes but I like a foot shift bike and I am sure you can find a decent 450 for almost nothing. Only thing I would say the foreman has against it is ground clearance :-\. You can get lift kits to solve that pretty easy but you might not have the rough sabine river bottoms like i ride.

We have had a Foreman 500 4x4, and it was a great bike. We now own a Kawasaki BruteForce 750 V-twin 4x4. We bought it new in 05, it is has been a really nice bike. The Brute it super durable, we have 29.5 tires and a lift on it. This past weekend we had 10 dogs in the hog trailer, about a 200 pound hog, and 5 people on it, and it had no problem going through the marsh at all. The grizzly and the brutes are really nice bikes.

I have seen lots of bikes on the ranch where i work on the gulf coast and the rancher 420 is the best i have seen in a while. I think Chris posted the TRX 300 ,that was the best ever. But like everything else good they stopped making them.

And yes , the foreman can handle more weight but i think the ranher is a better bike. But for about a 100 dollars or so you can buy high capacity springs from highlifter or a few other companies and makes a big difference.

Chris or anyone else that may know.

How does the 98 model honda fourtrax compare to the early to mid 90s model? Found a good deal on a 98 and just wanna know if they are similar to the earlier models.

x2  Honda 300, toughest bike ever made period. Polaris, Canam, and Kawasaki: "JUNK"   Just my opinion.

I have Raced, Built , And owned  them all. IMO Honda quit building a good bike when the quit the trx300. I have had 4 Brute force 750s and have pure torchered them with no problems. Cannam has a powerful set up but week tranys and they are high to work on. Me Ill stick with the kawi ;)

Honda is all I have ever owned since my first 3-wheeler.  Last one I bought was a Fourtrax 300 like posted above back in 2000.  Never plan to get rid of it and you can't seem to tear them up.  The new ones are bigger and faster but I can go anywhere they do and it is still light enough you can lift one end by yourself if you get hung up.

I have a Kawasaki prarie 360 4x4 I have had zero problems and have rode the piss out of it, it's faster than most 450 I have rode easy to handle works every time has a locking diff where you can go true all 4 wheel drive and you can't hardly get it stuck and doesnt use much fuel either, came new with camo and a winch for 4800.00  ;)

I don't see many guys on here bragging on them but to me there great and the ranch that borders me uses almost every brand and they suggested it after destroying alot of 4 wheelers

Had a 2003 Prairie 360 4x4. After replacing the front diff, a front axle, the 4x4 switch, and finally having the engine brake start messing up, I  sold it and bought another Honda Foreman.   I almost did not buy my Kawasaki Mule based on my bad experiences with the Prairie...

I hate to hear that about the prarie, maybe you just got a lemon, or maybe I just got lucky but mine has been bullet proof so far it's 2 years old and is ridden every day in rocky rough country, in ponds, creeks & every other place it will squeeze through. But I say buy what you like with your own money, I would buy another Kawasaki if I could afford another one right now, my only regret is not buying a buggie  or utv I think it would suit my needs better. Just a side note there is an 2003 prarie 360 for sale by some one in the classified section as we speak

With yours only being two years old, maybe they have made some improvements over the older models, or maybe I did have a lemon.  Mine was a 2003 model.

I have had both a Honda Rancher 350 and Kawie Brute Force 650 to hunt off of. The Honda is very dependably and will probably be around long after the Brute Force. With that said the Rancher couldn't compete when hunting. The bigger motor of the Kawie, diff lock, and smoother ride made the Kawie more useful and enjoyable, especially since there was only a couple hundred dollar difference between the two IMO.

kawasaki bayoo 400 4x4 was a good one until it got stolen. my suzuki 500 is a 2000 model and it has been ridden hard and no problems. Some of my friends got good deals on the polaris but have had problems with them... good luck in finding a good deal. If you find one that has been parked a long time and needs repairs let me know and I can probably hook you up with an honest mechanic. Sometimes those are the best deals. The mechanic told me that honda, kawasaki, suzuki and yamaha were all comparable, just change the oil and filter and keep stabil in the gas tank if you don't ride enough.
I also use a couple of ounces of "militec 1" in my oil.
