Title: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 12:39:48 am Got of to a good start, caught a smaller boar about 90 lbs. Then, we got on a lot of hogs and just couldn't get one caught. Let me tell you why. I had 3 good strike dogs on the ground. The hogs kept running and finally they singled one out. They would only bay for a couple of minutes. I sent a smaller running CD in to try and end it. The pig out manuvered him. So then I sent my main CD in to help. He's big and controls every catch. Still, the pig is staying just far enough in the thick brush not to be caught. At one point I remembered looking at my map screen on the GPS thinking, "wow, I would hate to be that pig out there!" He just doesn't realize how lucky he was to make it out of that last night. All it would have taken is one wrong move and one of my pitts would have sealed the deal. Due to how freaking cold it was and the fact this had been going on for hours and we had already caught a hog, I called my dogs out. Last night made me realize, how bAd I hate to run a hog for hours. I'm fixing to get rid of these pitts. I'm never gonna hunt a slow CD again. From here on out, it's a Bullyxdane or ridgebackxdogo or something that can out run a horse. I'm done!!!
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: hog tied on March 01, 2010, 08:05:28 am I run Pits for Cd's and they do fine. Sounds to me like you need some better bay dogs, maybe a nut dog. Finding the hog is only half the battle, they gotta keep em bayed so the catch dogs can do their job.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: T-Bob Parker on March 01, 2010, 08:32:48 am X2 there's no reason the Pitts shouldn't have caught if the hogs were legitimately stopped
OR your dogs may have been trashing on something, did you SEE a pig before you let the cds go? Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: uglydog on March 01, 2010, 08:53:48 am Alot too assume!
If it was in Old Rosehedges then there is no reason to blame anything, sometimes that is just the nature of the beast, big dog, small dog, slow dog, fast dog, loose dog, tight, it does not matter. Then again, it may be a problem can't make assumptions. Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: mzhoghunter on March 01, 2010, 09:00:11 am ID TRY A GRITTY STRIKE DOG ONE THAT USES HIS TEETH NOT JUST HIS BARK
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: goose on March 01, 2010, 09:59:11 am a pitt being being to slow is the last thing we have ever had problems with...you have to look at size factor and big bulky dog is just not going to be as fast and agile as wat i like to call pocket rockets...maybe try sum smaller built dogs if bigger built dogs is what your running...or have you ever ever considered crossing a pit with a july hound or greyhound...their smaller framed than a dane and have alot more bottom...jmo of course
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 11:20:40 am It's not the bay dogs! It's the brush, the slow pitts, these hogs! I've caught a lot here, but if they don't bay, it's not gonna happen. If you don't have some leg on the ground, it's not gonna happen. Hunting at night here is harder for a dog too! But, when we go in the day, we're on the money. I hate a dog that will put teeth on a hog, if he's gonna bite the hog, he better plan on catching him. Or, the hog better be running! I don't like a mouthy bay dog. If you bite, you get culled in my yard.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: ETHHunters on March 01, 2010, 11:25:18 am If you have had good luck with the dogs you have then I wouldnt try anything new. Nobody catches every hog they get on I dont care what kind of dogs they run. Sometimes the hogs win.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 11:49:14 am Exactly, I dont care who thinks they have super dogs, some hogs will not be caught. Let's think logically here for a few seconds! Look, I know that's like really hard for some of you close-minded nay Sayers!! Some hogs are faster than others, WAY FASTER! Now, with that in mind, I want you to vision what most peopes pitts, AB's, etc. Most are short for one, and for two, they are big and bully which makes them great for hogs that are standing still. If you get a fast hog, that Pitt is gonna get out ran. How you gonna catch a hog if you don't have a dog that can keep up with the hog or out run that hog. So, you can have a pack of gritty cur dogs all day long, but they bite that one hog who's got the heart of a lion, and the speed of a deer, you gonna get burned. A fast, leggy, running catch dog that can run down a hog like a cheeta, will catch more of those hogs. If you dissagree with that, the next 200lb runner we catch out here in the marsh, I'll bring it to an open field and you can turn you big bulky Pitt loose on it and if he doesn't stop him in the first 2 miles, you own me $500 dollars.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Scott on March 01, 2010, 01:12:06 pm For the most part, if it's over 60 pounds...it's not a real Pit. From your comments, it doesn't seem as if you've seen too many performance ABs either.
The simple fact of the matter is that all dogs (doesn't matter the breed, build, etc.) can and do get smoked... Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 03:52:03 pm NoT according to what's said above, it's my bay dogs apparently!
On a serious note, have you ever saw a working AB keep up with a horse? I've seen horses get flat out spanked by some running hogs! Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: ETHHunters on March 01, 2010, 04:06:32 pm There are very few dogs if any that can run as fast as a hog in a flat out foot race. Add a thicket to that situation and it is just about imppossible.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 04:08:44 pm What about a greyhound x ridgeback! I'm fixing to do a crazy cross.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: hog tied on March 01, 2010, 04:13:24 pm Sounds like you've got it all figured out.You said in your own post that if they dont bay it wont happen. If the hog is bayed and bayed right, you could send a two legged dog in to catch.Point being, if that hog is bayed solid, your CD will have a shot.Im not trying to pick on your bay dogs, but if the hog isnt bayed and your not using running CD'S, it wont happen.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 04:21:56 pm You tell me how your gonna bay a hog in stuff a hog is having problems moving in? The poor dogs can't get a spot open enough to bay. When the hog comes out, he'll run and do a big circle back to the brush. We catch hogs all the time, but never in the thick brush. We got to flush them out with a big pack of dogs. It's literally like a chess game.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: hog tied on March 01, 2010, 04:27:27 pm I guess I would have to ask you what difference the breed of your CD has to do with catching the hog if the hog itself cant get through the thickets. Im going to make an assumption and guess that you havent been hog hunting long. My advice to you would be to listen to those of us who have and use the info to make your pack and hunts better.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Texas_Cur on March 01, 2010, 04:29:55 pm I have to agree with some of the others. It sounds like your bay dogs couldn't shut it down, which happens to everybody.
When I get out run by a hog I blame the bay dogs, not the catch dogs. Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 04:37:06 pm I've never caught a hog. My bay dogs suck. The end.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: hog tied on March 01, 2010, 04:41:09 pm Im glad you see the light. Why ask for advice when you dont want it.
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Piglywigly on March 01, 2010, 04:49:51 pm Who asked for advice? This was a vent topic for me. It doesn't matter though, I'll agree w/ you, my bay dogs suck. The end.

Sorry if I sounded rude, didn't intend to come across that way naw man, I'm just messing around on here with some of the boyzz. It's all in fun! I just love to hog talk! Seriously though, I catch about 3-4 hogs just about every time we go. I'm too old and fat to keep going any longer than that. Usually after about 2, I'm ready to hit I-HOP! We make these young guns do all the work. So, sometimes we a few more cause they want to. Naw, the other night, I had an ol' boy say... "are you sure they're not running rabbits?" I was like yeah these rabbits out here in this stick cane are fast!!! :o Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: sdillard on March 01, 2010, 06:31:20 pm We got on one Sunday morning that we could not keep bayed and thought just maybe that they had trashed or something because we do run some gritty bay dogs. So we went in to try and see if we could see what they where after by the time we got to where they where baying it had broke again so we called the dogs off, and when they got to us two of them had there guts hanging so i dont care if you run gritty bay dogs or not there are just some hogs that wont be caught on some days.

I like to think that my dogs knew it was a shoat and didn't wanna get in trouble so they just let it run off! My dogs don't get smoked they just get left behind! Nah seriously though it is all part of the game you've got to outsmart the pig like Cward did on his last hunt and catch the pig slipping. Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Bump on March 01, 2010, 09:48:45 pm If the dogs cant get to the hogs to bay......how is a faster catch dog going to get in to catch?
Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: airduster29 on March 01, 2010, 10:25:13 pm good luck hope all works out for you butg you really should look into figuring out how to shut a running hog down with bay dogs not cd's
it will work out a lot better for you i us to hunt alot of rose bush thickets in east tx crawled my way to many hogs it is possible to bay and catch there Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: BigAinaBuilt on March 01, 2010, 10:30:08 pm If the dogs cant get to the hogs to bay......how is a faster catch dog going to get in to catch? I like to think of it as a yellow jacket that you just can't outrun you will eventually stop to take a swing and that is when the rest of the nest will catch up!Title: Re: We threw in the white flag last night. Post by: Eric on March 01, 2010, 11:45:49 pm I hear you. The lesson in this is don't doubt your dogs. :)
We run into this alot with thick brush or places with net wire. The hogs know the trails by heart. They can hit them 90 miles and hour plus they are part bulldozer. Dogs can only run and smell so fast. When they hit a wall of brush or net wire it takes time for them to find the holes. The hogs have home court advantage.
