Title: Who Stops??
Post by: dabutcher on March 10, 2010, 12:27:38 pm
So i didn't ruin the Riley thread.... it just kinda got me to wondering.

If ya'll ever hit a dog on the road or highway (and it's safe to stop), do you stop to see if the dog lived or if it has a number on the collar or anything?

I don't hit a animals very often but sometimes you can't stop or it comes out of nowhere but I always try to stop and see if the dog is ok or salvagable, and to see if theirs a number on it's collar or rabies tag to let their owner know what happened.

Ya'll ever do this??

I'll add that i'll stop for dogs, deer, and hogs......  and put em down if need be.  i don't really like seeing an animal suffer.

If it's a dog I will stop if possible.....if no collar and not seeming to be saveable and out in the sticks I will put it down.

I'll be the one who head ons a tree and dies trying to miss the dog.

If I did hit something (other than a possum) I would try to pull over to check on it.

A few years back, I was taking the girls to school and I had a lady flag me down to stop. Someone had hit and run on a darned cat. I helped her stabilize the cat best we could and tracked down the owner who came home from work to take cat to the vet. The darned cat lived, and myself and the lady who flagged me down each got gift cards to a local restaurant for helping. Not that you stop so that you will be rewarded, but it was nice that the lady was so thankful we helped her cat.

Cheers
M

I've never hit or ran over a dog but I would stop if it ever happens. Its just the right thing to do in most cases. No need for any animal to suffer if it cant be saved.

You really cant hold it against some folks that just leave though. I have seen it before when the drivers were terribly shaken and just not thinking assuming that the animal was dead.
From what I have seen, men usually stop and women freak out and keep driving.

aladatrot, we must be kindred spirits lol. My husband says that I would take out a person before I would hit an animal. Thankfully I never have, but if I did I would also make every possible effort to get in touch with whomevers number is on the collar or the vet clinic that is listed on the rabies tags. If there is no numbers, I would either do what I had to do to prevent undue suffering or take them to the vet and deal with the consequences later (with the husband or owner).

It has only happened to me once and I did stop to appologize. It was a small dog that came out of no where at top speed. I slammed on my brakes but it was too late. Poor little guy didn't have a chance. Going back to talk to the owner was a hard thing to do but it seemed to be the right thing to do. I will admit that I was worried because you never know how people will react.

I see what you mean dabutcher.:o
Just a little thought on my part would have kept me from posting that last line. lol. The women that frequent this board dont count in this case though.
I just call them like I see them but.....that dont mean I should post everything I see. lol.
Besides, the women on this board keep me an a few others lined out just fine when they need to! lol

You know, I think women who are more animal oriented would stop, but I know plenty of women who would get too emotional and just panic. So, it kind of is a true statement. Unfortunately, the emotional women I fear out number the sensible ones.

Deer, dog, Hog, Bear I stop.

I have hit 2 dogs. Both at 55+ or better and both died on impact. I stopped and neither had collars or anyone to call. I think they were deer dogs people and dumped. There is a lot of bears where I live and I have seen 3 hit. No one stopped and they kept going. Here in Fl. they want you to call and report the Bears and I called the FWC on all 3. They usually come and pick them up.

Cat, Possum, Coon or Diller he is vulture food.

Possum carry epm which causes serious illness in horses. I actually try to get them to help cut down the numbers and do local equine owners a public service.

I would probably stop for a coon to see if there were any young around that needed help. I just love odd pets.

For a bear, I'm thinking I would have to stop since it would likely ruin my truck.
Folks a little east of here have totally different roadkill to contend with. I have seen a couple of 10' gators laid out across the lanes.
Cheers

Btw, I feel like I am classified more as a "sensible" than an "emotional".

Hittin a gator ain't no joke, you might as well run over a log in the middle of the road.
One of my good friends hit one about 12 foot, sent him into the trees and he's paralyzed from the waist down.

This is his truck

If the animal is not dead has a collar but no ID what do you do? what if you are in City limits where discharging firarms is illegal?
Any other method could wind you in jail for animal cruelty.

If you take the animal to the vet you ar liable for the bill, unless you can find an owner that would accept responsibility.

sometimes you are darned if you do and darned if you don't.

i think i'd still take it to the vet in hopes that it's got a chip or maybe the local vet knows the dog.  and if all fails the vet can put the dog down, which doesn't cost too much.  just hard for me to watch a dog suffer.... now if it was a cat >:D

it depends on the situation , once i was going by my neighbors, whose family has been in the community nearly as long as mine has and their dog ran under me while chasing a cat . i ran over his back end . i went to tell the woman , she was babysitting somebody else's kids and her bigger kids were in the yard and saw it .

i told her as she couldnt leave i would take it to the vet , or shoot it and haul it of for her as i was pretty sure it wasnt worth trying to save ....   she loaned me a gun .

another neighbor that just moved in here from chicago has a big black mutt that kills chickens and chews up calves , and i can't hit that sum beetch to save my life , not even with a gun !!!   O0
