Title: Garden Time
Post by: Bryant on March 15, 2010, 10:23:35 pm
I sure miss reading Lavon's garden posts from a couple years ago.

Since moving to the country last year, I've been looking forward to planting a small garden.  I spent Sunday afternoon with the tractor tilling and getting everything ready.  I'll probably start planting this weekend.

Anyone else planting this year?

i gave up on gardening. apparently my ancestors were hunters, lol, because i cant seem to grow anything!  One year we planted a garden, tended to it everyday, then when things started to look good, a flood came and killed everything.  >:(  But i didn't give up, i planted a garden on higher ground the next year. Same thing... i worked in it every day. Finally everything started to bloom. I thought to myself, it won't be long now and i will have some veg.s.  :-\ All i managed to grow was miniature vegtables, lol. After that i figured that it was cheaper and easier to buy our veg.s from the store.  ;D

   We have our garden  going with onions, lettuce,cabbage,spinach,radishes and turnips i planted  some corn and beans  this weekend
hope I dont get burned  with a late frost again.
 we also have 144 tomatoe plants started and going good  along with artichokes,peppers along with a bunch of herbs
 the last average frost is the  23 of this month verses   the 13 in your area  so barring any late snow storms and sand storms
 i hope to have the type of garden i had at  home

Looking to have our first garden this year.  Hope to get some seeds this week and plant something sunday afternoon.  We'll see how it goes, I have a feeling that is going to be more work than expected.

We should have our raised bed gardens planted at the house by Easter weekend. We are also going to try something a little different this year too. We're going to have a large co-op garden with our neighbors. Planning to hit it with a 10' offset disc this week, then spread several loads of compost that we have been acquiring over the last year, then till it all in with a skid steer mounted tiller. We are hoping that by spreading the work load between the two families that we might have better success with a large garden, than we had trying it on our own last year.

Spent last weekend getting ours cleaned out and will start amending our soil this weekend.  Our average frost up here in Yankeeland is around April 3rd.  I hope to have our onions, lettuce, spinach, and radishes planted by Easter weekend.  Gonna get slim to fix me some trellis's for my green beans to climb on this year.  And going to get my eggplants started a whole lot earlier this year too!!  I just hope after all that rain we received all day long yesterday we are dried out enough for me to do planting this weekend!!   :o

Will take and post pics of the progress.

Pretty interesting to hear bout the different crops you guys got going up there! I plant random trees and veggies but I have this thing about growing things that get thrown out ( The bottom of cabbages, Mango seeds, Old potatoes ,avacadoe pits) I also have a few lemon and lime trees going along with a coffee tree. I also took some green onions that were used for dinner and planted also and at one time I went out and measured one at 38'' long!  :o There is legislation going on right now to make marijuana use by adults 21+ legal on private property so there has been an influx of guys growing that here lately also.

Matt,

They are telephone poles, cut on a portable sawmill.  They look pretty darn nice.

I need to find a mill, have a pretty good idea on where to find the wood...

Title: Re: Garden Time
Post by: Circle C on March 17, 2010, 04:35:45 pm
Cedar Nate has a mill, but I bet you can find one local. Seems like there used to be a mill near Cat Springs, that ought to be closer than Nate.

 George from Brookshire also has a portable mill.

I think there is one here in Magnolia or Pinehurst and if not I bet I could take em to Giles in Montgomery.

Circle C is correct.  They are telephone poles that have been run thru a saw mill.  We lucked out when we found this place.  All fencing was already done.  I'll get some more pics for yall.

We added the trees after we moved in because there wasn't any at all.  But other than that and the dog kennels and a few minor additions, it looks like it did when we bought it.  Lucky, right?   ;D

Title: Re: Garden Time

I like the drinking area, a little short on shade trees maybe. ;D

I feel your pain with the rabbits. I lost several trees last winter when it was so dry to the dayummed things.

How far can you see out there, all the way to tomorrow ?  ;D ;D

Title: Re: Garden Time
Post by: jls41 on March 17, 2010, 06:43:08 pm
BobbyB the tree issue is the only thing I don't like about this place, but that's an easy fix as long as I can keep the rabbit population in check!   ;). Growing up in a small town in the upper northeast corner of the Texas Panhandle and on the Canadian River, trees and cattle are the two things I miss most nowadays!!

we can definitely see blue northerns coming about a half a day before they arrive!!

Mandi, myself, and our neighbors, Raul and Maria, just got the majority of our CO-OP garden planted yesterday.  Just so everyone knows, Mandi is the Garden Boss, if the garden fails to produce, it will be her fault ;D

We spent considerable time working the gumbo soil that we live on. Used a cultivator, an offset disc, and a 6' tiller/ rotovater. We spread ~16 cubic yards of manure/ stall cleanings, then tilled that in about 8".

After making our rows, we ended up with 83 rows, that are 40' long.

This week we will bring out an excavator and install  700' of 1-1/2 waterline to keep the garden watered during the heat of the summer.

Here is what we planted
Row #
1-10 = Sweet Corn

11-15 = Bush Beans

16-20 = Anasazi Beans

21 = Jalapeno

22 = Cabbage

23 = Zucchini

24 = Cabbage

25 = Okra

26 = Cucumber - Vining

27 =

28 = Yellow Squash

29 =

30 =

31 = Canteloupe

32 =

33 = Cucumber - Bush type

34-79  = reserved for succession planting of Sweet Corn

80-83 = Watermelon

DAGGUM!!!  Now that is what you call a garden!!!  :o :o  Can't wait to see pics of it!!

We got the majority of ours planted this weekend as well - giant sunflowers, radishes, lettuce, spinach, onions, bush beans, eggplant, broccoli, & watermelon.  We will be finishing up this weekend with cantelope, zucchini squash, yellow squash, tomatos, jalapeno peppers, green chiles, and purple hull cowpeas.  We are working on some kind of drip irrigation system for ours as well.  Sure will make it a lot easier to water more efficiently during the hot summer hours!!

Finally got everything in the ground.  Now it's just watering and waiting.

I ended up planting Zucchini, Okra, Tomatoes, Cantaloupe, Corn, Bell Peppers, Jalapenos, Banana Peppers, Peas, Kentucky Beans, Carrots and Watermelon.

We got our garden in saturday, we planted the cold weather stuff a while back and it stayed so wet that most of it rotted. This time it looks better, if we get some rain this weekend it will all be coming up soon. I haven't had a garden for a couple of years, so I had to break a new garden spot. I'm sure the bermuda grass will be bad this year, but I plowed up where I stacked hay last summer so the ground should be fairly fertile from the hay rotting on it all year. We planted onions, collards, and spinach a while back, then green beans, okra, purplehull peas, corn, tomatoes, peppers, squash, cucumbers, zuchini, watermelons, and some very late potatoes that should have gone in a long time ago but the day after I bought the seed it started raining and just now has dried out. Hopefully they will make at least some small potatoes to go with the green beans.:) Here is a picture of me breaking the garden the old fashioned way. My horse Bully hadn't been worked in quite a while so we had some behavior modification sessions before we got to this point!(http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz282/levibarcus/010.jpg)

After last years drought and the lack of produce from my garden, I just did not have the enthusiasm this year, all of yalls gardens put any of my efforts to shame!

Jolynne, you better get Slim to work on that chicken coup! the little fluffybut hen is setting her clutch now, and I got some beautiful Roosters from last hatch that need to go, they are just starting to crow!

Krystal, that is cool!!  I will have to get to work on the coop now, but it's got to stop raining first!!  Slim and I both agree that no roosters unless Thomas either trains us one or we get that big "dancin'" one!!  ;) LOL!!

How's everyone's garden coming?  I'm turning veggies like crazy over here.  We had a heck of a storm come through night before last with wind, hail and all that.  Layed my corn over...hopefully it will stand back up but we'll see.

I would say from your pics I aint doing something right haha.  I got fruit but it seems to be taking forever to mature.  My tomatoes are a good size but still green and my bell peppers are about half that size and havn't grown much lately.  I have done my garden with no pesticides or fertilizer just to see what it would do and I think I am seeing that I need some fertilizer!  I do have some squash and bush bean that are coming on strong though hopefully they will make.  I planted some carrots and they never even came up?
