Title: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 26, 2010, 10:30:37 pm I know this is opinion but I want people's feedback on catch dogs that can be around small children. My wife puts up with me and all my crap. She said no pit-bull so I will respect that. I think pits get a bad wrap and there are lots of good ones for every bad one. But my wife never tells me not to do something except for this. Do I just need to build a dog run for a catch dog and bring him out to hunt every week? Or is there a catch dog that will put up with kids trying to ride him and pulling ears...
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: wcg89 on March 26, 2010, 10:49:24 pm I have yet to see a pit that was human aggressive unless it was protecting something, tjr89 has a blue pit that is one of the nicest dogs I've ever seen to other dogs and people, I have a dogo/ab that has some food aggression with dogs, and if he don't know you, he don't like you until he is around you for about an hour rolleyes, I don't think he would bite someone, but he will growl and bark in your face if he doesn't recognize you ;D
I would think the best thing for you to do is either to buy some kind of AB or AB cross as a pup and raise it around the kids with them handling it alot...or just start searching around and ask people on here or wherever if they have a CD that they KNOW would be safe around kids, then let them show you the dog with their kids first ;D Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: Hippy on March 26, 2010, 11:06:50 pm some ppl may not agree but I use a bmc that is straight catch i've heard from some ppl that he will eventually back up and bay but he's been on some big hogs already and took a lickin and never let go and when he's at home I'd leave a infant in the pen with him just don't let a stranger try and walk in and touch that kid becuase I won't make any promises on how that poor guy will fair.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: raider54 on March 27, 2010, 03:50:37 am American Bulldogs and DOGO's my grandkids treat ours something terrible, they pull them all thru the house by the tail, they ride them and nothin but love
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: roughdog on March 27, 2010, 04:15:23 am i got ten pits in my yard and my 4 year old rides them all they love her
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: hillbilly on March 27, 2010, 04:30:48 am never had any problem with my pits. still i really don't trust anydog around childeren. had a treeing walker bite my daughter several years ago. dont know but i am sure she done something to him. but i think if your wife dont like bulldogs i would try an airdale. had one and it was the best catch dog i ever had until he got killed.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: de_moon on March 27, 2010, 06:21:29 am There are many pits out there that can be trusted, but I also understand your wife's point of view. Like a few have said...AB or an AB cross. Raising one from a pup sure helps. Some people use curs as straight catch dogs & some may make great catchdogs, but the percentage of bulldogs that make catchdogs is much higher than the percentage of curs that make catchdogs.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: Scott on March 27, 2010, 07:11:45 am Instead of looking for just a particular breed...you need to find a breeder that breeds with that particular temperament in mind. They're out there...you just have to find them...

Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 27, 2010, 09:12:41 am Mr. Mason's? Is there a web site? How do I contact him?
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: uglydog on March 27, 2010, 09:54:51 am You are very smart to respect your wifes request, not because it is against PitBulls, but that thats how you keep "peace". Any of the breeds that I would use for a catch dog had better have the quality temperment that it would safe around kids, or it is a cull in my mind no matter the breed. I feel a little different about my curs, but not Catch dogs.
Any small child should be safe towalk in my yard, or house at any time, with only the fear of being licked to death or knocked down by wagging tails. Our house and companion dogs are made up of mostly the same dogs we use to catch hogs with, meaning that they are the ones expected to have the MOST stable/trustworthy temperments out of all the dogs we own. Its not about the breed as much as it is the bloodline and where you get the dog from, a knowledgeable breeder, that will show you and explain the research and proof behind a STABLE temperment bred dog. That takes a responsible passionate person who cares more about the breed or bloodline than making money off of litters every six months. When I say stable temperment these are the dogs protecting my home and family and have/can decide who is a threat, anybody else and all really small people (kids) are considered friendly/family a dog in capable of this is not worthy to be sleeping in my home. Now that being said you & family, are more than welcome to come to my house and I will show the difference, but I don't have any dogs for sale, Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: Pudge on March 27, 2010, 10:36:44 am I've had American Bulldogs for many years. My kids and grandkids have been raised around them and never had any problems. Imo they are great family dogs.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dabutcher on March 27, 2010, 10:43:09 am like what's been said i'd be looking more for a breeder than breed. and, there's plenty of breeds out there that catch other than a pit best not to cause trouble between you and your wife over a dog. this is personal preference for me but if by some miracle you found one of uglydog's amerigos for sale, i'd jump on it. i've also heard that Scott has some really good american bulldogs and i believe he has a litter on the ground right now. don't know if any are for sale but i'd be asking him. it takes more work but if i were you, i'd raise that dog from a pup around my kids (this is what i did). takes a lot of waiting but it's well worth it, imo.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 27, 2010, 11:00:43 am I am thinking puppy. That way the dog is cute when I bring it home and not scary. I just do not know what breeds make good catch dogs. My BMC gyp grabbed a lttle pig by the neck when it charged my Catahoula but I would not call her a catch dog just gritty. I do love my BMC she is awsome around the kids. But we need a real catch dog. I would like to make the catch dog my son's dog.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 27, 2010, 11:02:25 am What is an amerigo?
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 27, 2010, 11:07:28 am Just found Amerigo I like the look of that dog!
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: aladatrot on March 27, 2010, 11:32:27 am It is my own opinion that bulldogs in general are hopelessly loyal to their families. We have even gotten full grown ABs, Crosses, and even a Pit that would give their lives for our girls despite us only getting the kids every other weekend. I am a huge fan of ABs and Crosses - but well bred ones.
Cheers M Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: RyanI on March 27, 2010, 07:09:16 pm Get a Airadale.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 27, 2010, 07:32:27 pm Where in the world do I find an Airedale breeder. I read about them but do not know any breeders and I have never really been around one.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: GAhunter on March 27, 2010, 07:51:17 pm Are the majority of catdo's straight catch?
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: LostHighway on March 27, 2010, 07:58:07 pm It's all about the individual dog!!
(http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u267/LostHighwayDogs/IMG_0865.jpg) Taylor loves her some Digger and Digger loves him some Taylor. Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: shawn on March 27, 2010, 08:05:14 pm id go with an ab pup and check out its parents and ask a lot of questions about their temperment around kids.
all dogs especially bulldogs should be closely monitored around kids though, i know ill catch hell for that statement but your talking about a dog that can do serious damage quick. Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 27, 2010, 08:18:46 pm I like pits because I have been around a lot of good ones. The only bad one were people that tried to make the aggressive. That is like trying to make water wet you just get a mess. But my wife puts up with my camo truck, keeping my bow just inside the front door for a quick hunt, me going hunting at every opportunity, and so much more. So if she does not want a pit I will give her that. If I did get a pit I would have trouble with my wife. She does not tell me not to do or get things very often so I will respect her feelings on this one. After all she is not happy about the camo truck with Super Swampers that I drive everywhere that she told me not to get. I would like to see an Airedale but I would prefer an AB or an Amrido.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: texasguy23 on March 27, 2010, 08:47:52 pm Man I can feel you on the wife front about pitts. I was raised with them my whole life but she jus don't trust them. Although a stray one jus made its way in my back yard so I think its a sign lol good luck I'd go for an amerigo.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dabutcher on March 27, 2010, 09:48:11 pm i'll say this about the amergos that uglydog breeds, the one i have it would be super hard for me to get rid of her . she's my baby and i'd do anything for her and i'm confident she would do the same. easy going dog, really laid back around the house, and ready to go when it's hunting time. i've never had to worry about her with my kids, strangers coming up to the house is another story........good luck gettin one. i had looked around for 6 months or a little longer and fell into one by pure LUCK. i know she doesn't breed to just sell a litter. I got one from someone on an accidental breeding. Glad i did though.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: lonewolf on March 28, 2010, 12:45:38 pm I have 4 ABs, 3 males and 1 female! I like all of them, but the female is my favorite. No agression and grate handle on all of them. I think you need to spend time training CDs as much or more so than bay dogs. Teaching a dog to obey and handle is time well spent. You will not regret the time it takes and everyone you hunt with will notice the defferance.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 28, 2010, 01:11:29 pm Yeah, I would live an Uglydog Amergo. But I am going with AB. I also think they will make sure nobody steels my BMC out of the yard. I think I will start with a male and add a female for retirement planning. That way I can get a puppy to make sure I have a catch dog on the bench. Them starters need a rest every now and then.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: BULLMASTER on March 28, 2010, 02:18:40 pm I havent seen one pit that I trust yet,I have been attacked 3 times for no reason .One of the attacks was from my inlaws dog that they had over 8 years and never showed any aggression toward anyone, needless to say that was the last time he attacked anyone.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: 3-Bdogs on March 28, 2010, 10:24:00 pm that is prefrence and my prefrence is if your that worried about your child gettin hurt dont make an opportunity for it which means build a kennel not being rude its just the most efficent way and as far as aggression some of the ab i have had and been around were very human aggresive and thats SOME not all same goes for pitts had more prob with the ab to be honest as far as human aggression it all depends on who breed it who raised the other hand is i know labs, chows, currs, hounds, little house dogs that were worse than any pitt or ab so to each is own in JMO
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: HIGHWATER KENNELS on March 28, 2010, 11:00:41 pm Fellows, for what its worth I been around pits for quite some time dealing with different catch dogs from different lines. Never had a certain breed of pits just would pick em up as I go to use. Had em from puppies and even bought full grown dogs, never once thought that one of them would turn on me or my kids. Of course I had ones that would be dog aggressive from time to time and would have to cull em, but what happen to my buddy sat. shocked me when he called me. He had this dog for 4 years from a pup, dog has been hunted by him and myself for years so no excuse for what he done at all could a person find. He simply turned on his own owner for no reason. Now this dog was on a chain and my buddy has small children so it just so happened to be him thank god and he was able to deal with it. So when people say that it is HOW YOU RAISE THE DOG well in this case that motto failed the test. Be careul with pits, bottom line cause u never know I know it woke me up.
Title: Re: Best family catch dog Post by: dub on March 28, 2010, 11:07:20 pm I have hunting dogs so a kennel is being built. But I like to spend time with my dogs and have them as part of the family too.
