Title: Sunday night suprise
Post by: levibarcus on April 12, 2010, 10:08:35 am
Last night I let the dogs out of the kennel to run around the yard. I went inside for about 2 min. and when I came back out they were gone. I've done this before and they just hung around the house but not this time. My wife was on the back porch and I asked her where they were and she said she didn't know but last saw them headed east from the house. I jumped on the 4 wheeler and drove down the road a little ways and saw deer running out of the woods and figured it was my dogs trashing. I waited a minute but no dogs came out of the woods behind the deer so I killed the 4 wheeler and I could hear them baying. I have permision on that property so I unlocked the gate and went as far as I could on the 4 wheeler then took off across the creek and into the woods on foot. When I got there they had about a 150 lb. boar caught up under a root ball in the side of a creek. I had a tie rope so I leaned out over the side of the creek and caught him by the top jaw and lifted his front end off the ground, tied him to a root and went down and hobbled him. I got the dogs caught and tied and the hog out of the creek when I looked up and my wife was coming through the woods. She said she could hear the dogs from the house and could tell I had a hog so she rode her bicycle down and found the 4 wheeler and found me in the woods. I drug the hog about a hundred yd. and gave out so we left it and took the dogs back to the house and got lights as it was getting dark. I have to tell you it's not easy to find a tied hog in the woods in the dark. I got turned around and it took us 30 min. to find the hog. My wife insisted on helping me drag it out and I figured she'd be upset about it but she was a trooper. She only got mad one time when she fell down and scratched herself on some briars! I really did feel bad cause it took us nearly an hour to drag him out across three creeks and up hill. If I'd realized what a job it would be I would have stuck him and left him. Anyway it suprised me that my dogs went a half mile and caught a hog on their own. I was proud of them. I'll try to post a pic of the hog.(http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz282/levibarcus/033.jpg)

Yeah, my wife has a sister but she's married! A good one is hard to find, I've got a good one. Hog hunting isn't her thing at all but she knows I enjoy it so she humors me. Matt, here are my dogs They are all pups (under 2) except the brindle he's a 4 yr. old. Here is Buddy(http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz282/levibarcus/dogs001.jpg) This is Hannah, she is a buddys dog, he doesn't hunt on his own so he told me to hunt her. She's the closest thing to a strike and trail dog I've got, she's just figuring it out.(http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz282/levibarcus/dogs010.jpg) Kate, the help dog and wannabe lap dog! She'll bay the heck out of one and help catch but not much hunt to her.(http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz282/levibarcus/dogs014.jpg) Edith (to prove that you can have your Kate and Edith too!) Seen 2 hogs, helped catch both, still pretty tore up from last week.(http://i836.photobucket.com/albums/zz282/levibarcus/dogs013.jpg)

Thanks for the comments guys, this is the second bigger hog I've caught by myself with my own dogs. I caught a lot of shoats in the winter, but haven't been here lately. My dogs are just figuring out what they are doing and seem to be learning every time I take them out. My good cd Buddy is pretty bruised up on one shoulder, so I'll be out until he's well but I'm looking forward to having more progress reports as me and my dogs continue to learn!

Levi,

How's it going?  My hubby and I enjoyed reading your post and looking at your great looking dogs.  Quick question, that female that is pictured, is that the mother to the pups that I got from you?  Grandkids have named the white and brown pup Beethoven and he looks a lot like her.  All the pups are doing great and growing like weeds.  We have a blast with them when we let them out in the big pens to run and play.  I will try to get some pictures of them so that you and your wife can see them.  Oh yeah the little odd ball pup, the one with long black hair, hubby has grown very fond of and has named her Fluffy...LOL  She is one of the rowdiest of the puppy pack..LOL
Keep the stories and pictures coming.

Yes she is the mother to your pups. Glad to hear that they are doing well. That gyp got on her first hog by accident last week, about a 200 lb. boar that cut her up pretty bad. I hope she isn't messed up from getting hurt on her first hog, but she was trying to help catch. I hope the pups make good dogs for ya'll.
