Title: got a training Question?
Post by: DangerZone on April 28, 2010, 11:55:31 am
I started my BMC pup 4 weeks ago he's 6 months this week end, He's been in the pen with 2 boars one  10-15 lb and one 30-40 lb, 6 times now, It has gotten more aggessive every time,  you can hardly hold him back he's on their a** and will not let them out of one of the corners of the pen,, till this last sunday, put him in in the morning and the pigs put their noses in the corner, he barked and then kind half way lost interest. tried again in the evening about the same. The pen is kinda small hoping to finish a larger pen this weekend. My pup is about 60lb now I'm thinking I either need the bigger pen or bigger more aggessive hogs.  ?????  let me know what ya think guys????

just like you and me...dogs get bored after awhile with the same ole thing. you don't need the bay pen any further. run mock hunts and get him in the woods, he knows what a pig is and he will bay them so he's ready to stick in the woods.

I would only use a pen with a big sow now. That way when he gets knocked around there won't be any tusks. But lust like they said mock hunts or even a real hunt.

I would use more than 1 hog on him put on 3, make sure the pen is large enough nothing small.  See how that goes or put him on a larger hog at least 150.

Once they usually start baying in the pen, I take to the woods with em.  There is so much they have to learn from that point, I want to start as quick as I can.

lotta jam up strike dogs out there never even seen a bay pen.  jump out races and mock hunts speed the process up a little, but it's too much work for me.  just put him on the ground in heavy sign.  if i have too many dry runs in a row, ill bite the bullet and set up a jump out race or mock hunt.

I only put a dog in a bay pen 1 time if he shows interest I try him out and keep feeding him, if he doesnt he goes down the road. If your wanting a bay pen competion dog get a bigger pig and keep at it, if you want a woods dog take him hunting. IMO dogs learn bad habbits in bay pens like baying too close which will eventually get him killed in the woods.

I agree with everyone else, Baypen work will ruin a woods dog after the basic's have ben established. It makes them have no desire to find a pig b/c there used to you taking them to one. Woods time or mach hunts and a few months on the chain  ;) he is still a baby
