I have had two brothers that go back to king ranch blood. They were both saddle backs, one black and yellow and one black with brindle.  Both damn good dogs but totally opposite of each other. One was probably one of the best dogs I had ever had, if there was a hog around he would find it, would wind off the truck and gritty as hell. That finally got him killed, tried running a vest on him but he wouldnt hunt with it on.  The brother is longer range and wont hardly put a mouth on a hog but is also a damn solid dog.  Both out of same litter and both good but totally opposite in the way they hunted.  Dont know much about the history of the line just know they were out of that line on their dams side.

I am pretty sure they were owned by Joe Stiles. He was a horse division foreman on the King ranch. He left the ranch a few years ago and took the dogs with him. I don't know where he is now, but may be able to find out.

I e-mailed Mike Mayo @ the King Ranch about this and this is what he had to say:

I have been here 30 + years and used to hunt hogs here 20 years ago and I have never heard of one. Sounds like someone put a catchy name on a crossbred dog

I am not saying he is right or wrong but thats what he said ???

i just talked to joe stiles son, he said they started useing dogs to get away from using helicoptors.  they were dog breaking all the replacement heifers.  he said that he dosent think his dad has any left out of that bloodline.  he also said they had over 40 yella dogs, and only 1brindle dog.

I guided some quail hunting trips on the King Ranch but never did see any hog dogs. This was back in the 80's though. I never did hear of them raising any dogs for hogs but that does not mean that they didn't. The King Ranch is a real big place.

We did see a bunch of hogs down there though including javelina. If the bird dogs mess with javelina they just attack as a pack. It would be some easy hunting because all you would have to do is drive around and look for sakawiesta grass. The hogs always laid up in it and we had dogs point them all the time.
