Title: Rescued Pup Need advice (Updated 12/28/10)
Post by: hog bit on June 19, 2010, 02:44:31 pm
I rescued a few catahoula pups from a bad situation.  The mother wasn't being fed properly and quit nursing.  The one I posted about under sick pup died last night.

The lone survivor needs to put some weight on quick.  He is almost 6 weeks old and skinny as a rail.  He is bottle feeding (similac and whole milk) and just starting on bread with milk.  I hit him with some nemex, and he's been passing worms like crazy.

Can I start putting rice bran oil on his food now or do I need to wait a few more weeks?  Any other suggestions?  I really appreciate any suggestions.

In addition to the scrambled eggs, you can also just add an egg to the milk, mix it like you are gonna scrambled it, but let him have it raw. Less time consuming, and he still gets the proteins from the egg that he needs. Oh and to keep his blood sugar up, mix a table spoon of cairo syrup in the milk as well.

he could have started eating meat as early as 3 weeks just for futures reference, DO NOT FEED the dog, or puppies bread! That is ceraeal grains and dogs are not vegetarians. Alot of dogs have cereal grain allergies, and will have immune issues & skin issues and alot of issues your VET will love to make nmoney off you from.

Thats kind of you, to try and take care of the pup, whole milk and similac are for humans, if you need to give milk then try goat milk, or a powder mix unimilk replacer, or even better  puppy milk replacer is best, WHOLE milk is not good on their stomach.

If he is sickly go buy RAW chicken wings, use kitchen scissors and cut into 4 quarters per wing and offer that to the pup and see if his whole health does not come around in a day or two, when it starts getting some nutrition his body can actually process. DO NOT FEED COOKED CHICKEN BONES TO A DOG, ONLY RAW MEAT & BONES

Thanks. He will have chicken for dinner tonight.

TinyTexasCowgirl  I think he liked the raw egg last night.

Good luck! and he is old enough to eat dry dog food just find something with high calories (high fat and protein) its a little higher priced, but you will feed less than a cheaper priced feed and the pup will get alot more from a better quality feed.  Smaller kibbles for a little pup is easier for them, but the hard texture is good for the teething process as is the raw meat and bones. If you can feed the RAw meat and bones full time do the research on how to balance the nutrition so the dog will get all the vityamin requirements he needs to develop properly with the variety of fish & organ meat that contains all the vitamins.

Dry feed I like a 20% fat for pups or higher. It does not have to say puppy feed on the label, that always cost a little more, but you getting the same in a very High energy performance dog feed from your local feed store.

Might wanna try some dyne.

Title: Re: Rescued Pup Need advice
Post by: uglydog on June 21, 2010, 01:38:35 pm
All those as supplements are good. Electrolytes to help prevent dehydration, Dyne has extra vitamins, Good quality dog feed should have needed nutrients, but you never know for sure. However the body can only use what is needed the rest just passes through, it does not store it, not can it use up extra.

Uglydog,
Funny you should mention skin problems. He was developing lil pockets of puus right at the skin. They pop and just turn into a lil sore. None of the spots have scabbed over or healed. I make sure to keep his kennel clean.  What should I do to prevent and/or treat the sores?
Thanks Ya'll have been a great help.

Good chance there is some fungal issues going on top of all the other because the little thing has a tough time and stress also equals immune issues.

I would try a warm bath with a little betadine scrub, wait a couple days and do the bath again. This way you are treating the little fella from the inside - nutritionally and from the outside with a bath.

don't get any of that stuff in eyes , nose or mouth though.

Hog bit, Just a heads up, I just got back from my vet with my young pup, and she has almost the exact same "spots" going on with her, guess what, Staff infection! Might need to have your pup looked at.

Title: Re: Rescued Pup Need advice
Post by: catahoula16 on July 01, 2010, 09:46:05 pm
I have a pup that had those and the hair would fall out..took her to the vet and it was called red mange..it is little mites under the skin that eat the hair folicle and then the hair falls out..causes them to itch like crazy thus making the sores..it takes some kind of medicine they put on at the vet, then benadryl for itching, fish oil capsules for imflamation, and a multi pet vitamin to build up the immune system, plus the vet will need to give it some antibotics for the sores for they will cause a secondary infection..believe me it is scary but not contagious to humans or other animals..hope that helps you

Have you been deworming the little thing?
Can't tell what the spots are from just looking at, but if they are spreading and growing needs to go to the vet to get a skin scraping to confirm to be sure to get the correct diagnoses. Good luck

Uglydog. Yes I did worm him 2 weeks ago.
I just called the vet. They can't see him till Tuesday.
I bathed him in iodine shampoo on Wednesday. I will bathe him wirh it again today and Sunday.

The vet took one look and said that's definately ringworms. He also has coccidia.
Doc prescibed albon for the coccidia and a topical rub (Cohofite) paired with continued iodine baths for the ringworms.

Thats good news! You should see a big turn around in that pup now that you have it on Albon, that Cocci will kill such  a small pup in hurry, it must have a strong will.

He definately has heart.
Hopefully he'll learn what a pig is tomorrow.  If he treats that pig like he treats my 8 month old Mt Curr, I'll be happy.

Uglydog,
He did about as good as I could hope for.  While I had the pig tied, he walked over smelled it and walked away.  When I went to untieing the pig went to squealing.  He let out a few barks then just watched.

Roger that Uglydog. I will let him live the good life for a while. Right now I have him and an 8 month old that run loose in the back yard. She gives him hell, but when he has enough he let's her know.   He definately has heart.

I originally named him Boy asm pronounce by Foghorn J. Leghorn (The big rooster).  The wife firmly said no.  Since she is dead set against anymore dogs; she thinks one is too many.  I compromised.  He is now known as Billy.

Billy is doing GREAT! He will be seven months on the 12th.  He weighs 35lbs.  I think he is a good looking dog.  I showed him a hog for the first time a few days ago.  The link may or may not work.  I had to use my phone to upload and get thie link to youtube.  Thank you awesome firewall at work.

http://m.youtube.com/my_videos?gl=US&warned=True&client=mv-google&hl=en

The bigger brown dog pretty much ignores the pig until it ties to move.

Well bless his little heart,....what a tough nut he is. Congrats on getting him mthrough the tough times, after seeing the pic of him when you first got him, I wouldn't have given 2 cents for his chances of making it. You did a hell of a job with him.

Did the link work?

I let Billy bay some pigs in a trap for a while today while I snapped a few pics.  He stayed about ten feet from the pen working circles the whole time.

Billy had his first confirmed find and bay.  He was on his way to a bay along another dog's track.  He broke off and went bay this sow.  He kept her bayed about 15 minutes before any other dogs went help him.
