Title: Strange Hunt...
Post by: Mike on August 30, 2008, 01:48:13 pm
I met Clay, Stacy, Chris, Mandi and their girls last night after work for a quick hunt. We were still at the trucks getting ready when the dogs opened up several hundred yards up a pipeline right-of-way. A few minutes later three hogs cross the high line line in front of us. The dogs were bayed solid while we finished getting ready and headed their way. Tweety pops out on the pipeline and Maggie and Mollie are still hammering away... we're thinking uh-oh!

We ease up in the palmettos and there's a hog... laying there dead! It was in a low spot where a bunch of trash piled up from when it floods. The hog ended up getting caught in a wad of real thin wire. Four strands were wrapped around it's neck and it finally choked to death trying to get away from the dogs. He was bayed, snared and caught! That's a first for me. ;D I guess when the hog died, Tweety quit it and came on out.

Taylor and Kailey with the hog.

Glad is was the hog caught in the wire and not one of the dogs.

We found a small hog caught in a wire snare on a fence line about a month ago. We started looking at all of the game trails going under that fence and most had snares set waiting for pigs, our dogs, ect.  We cut them all down and took them with us.  Would love the run into the d-bag poacher setting those snares one day.

It was a strange hunt indeed. Never been on a hunt where the hog bayed up, and tied himself ;D

It was certainly a different feeling for me having changed out dog packs. Going from super rough dogs, and needing to get to the bay in a hurry. To having dogs that will stand back and bay, and not needing to be in a hurry to get to them.

Taylor and Kailey are ready to hit the woods again, maybe we can get them and Brooke together for the weekend of the 26th in Centerville. Spend a couple days hunting and fishing.

I guess it's pretty loose baying dogs that won't catch when the darned thing dies in the middle of the bay. I did feel sorry for the hog though. He didn't even get a chance to die with dignity. The going got tough and the poor fellow just choked.  :(
