Title: spray on rubbing alcohol for dogs in the summer heat Post by: goose on June 27, 2010, 10:02:58 am have you guys ever heard of doing this...been hunting for a long time and just recently heard about this
ive seen people use the rubbing alcohol in a sray bottle method....also have heard of a guy using that florida water stuff that alot of summer ball players use...a buddy of mine uses the following mix horse liniment ,green rubbing alcohol, and listerine to rub his dogs down and hoss when it hot his dogs come and stand still to get their rub down...i guess this opens their pores up...anybody else ever heard of this Title: Re: spray on rubbing alcohol for dogs in the summer heat Post by: firemedic on June 27, 2010, 10:16:33 am That's a new one to me.....I'd say that the dogs like it because the alcohol evaporates quickly and cools them off. Same thing with water but it's much slower to evaporate.

Heard that if you can soak the belly and up in the loin area as well as their feet it will really bring their body temp down.

BY using rubbing alcohol to cool down your dog can cause serious harm. Isopropyl alcohol is quickly absorbed through the skin, and large amounts applied topically can be inhaled, which can lead to alcohol poisoning and other problems. A number of case reports in the medical literature describe small children who slipped into comas after a caregiver tried to reduce their fevers with alcohol. Other reports have described cases in which adults suffered cardiac and neurological problems after using alcohol-soaked towels to cool down or ease pain. that mixer is not used to cool ur dog... In fact, its a RUB for people in the Pitbulldog fighting world, and a very sneeky rub at that! ..... The best thing you can do is keep pleanty of water and a good shade around there dog house... I build a 2x2 box doghouse with a 4x4 plywood on top of that, this will add shade on all 4 sides ur dog will have nice COOL shade No mater where the HOT summer day sun is located YIS NoLoveKennels Title: Re: spray on rubbing alcohol for dogs in the summer heat Post by: goose on June 28, 2010, 06:17:30 am were talking about hunting not keeping them on chains...like the idea of the dog house tho and never thought about putting to much rubbing alcohol on them...and the man who told me about that rub is an ole school foxhunter who mostly does competition field trials now never owned a bulldog he runs his dogs just about every nite and said he has used that concoction for years...says it helps cool their body temp down a lil quicker and makes their muscles relax more sore there will be less swelling and soreness

I am aware of the fact that it is not good for their skin etc but if it will save a life I imagine I can take care of the skin issues later.
Title: Re: spray on rubbing alcohol for dogs in the summer heat Post by: Reuben on June 28, 2010, 08:16:17 am I've read that dogs want to cool their underside naturally and that this is the place to really cool your dog down. This is where I concentrate on first and if I have enough coolant I cool the whole dog down.
Title: Re: spray on rubbing alcohol for dogs in the summer heat Post by: boarwild on June 28, 2010, 09:25:44 am WARNING. be very carful doing this. Do not in anyway get it close to there noses. i wouldn't do it at all, but if you want to the belly is the best. I have personnaly witnessed two dogs die by doing this. In both cases the vet said that there bodies were cooled down to fast from the alcohol hitting there nose. I thought the vet was crazy but then my father in law told me that is how they used to kill pigs. They would rub alcohol on the pigs noses and they would die instantly. I would just be careful uses it and keep it away from the nose. It doesn't take but a drop to hit the nose if the dog is hot enough.
