Open or silent on the track… went hunting with Ray Buck and Jack Ward Saturday morning and was the first time I went hog hunting with hounds that are open on the trail…. I want to say thanks to the both of them for letting me and my pups go along was real fun…but to get back to the question what do all off u think about hunting with dogs that are open mouthed. We got out about 6 and by 7:30 we had a nice 250 lbs boar bayed up. Those dogs they had were real go getters and was glad to see my two go in and hunt with them… just don’t know what to think about the dogs not being able to hold the hogs like I was use to … when I found my dog he was at the truck and was cut not real bad but cut none the less… I think that he tried to stop the hog but didn’t have enough help could be wrong but don’t know could not keep up with those hounds of Rays… all and all it was a good hunt and would love to go with them again but will be ready for the long chase and wet ground u have to cover down there On The Creek With Ray Buck…

Open mouthed or silent whats the best....

The one that you enjoy hunting behind is the best.

dude asking that question on here is like asking a crowd of tired hot cowboys wats better coors, budlite, millerlite, shiner, or budweiser...they all do the same thing its just wat all you prefer ;)

me personally myself i like any beer as long as its cold and i like anydog as long as it consistently gets the job done ;D

      I won't touch the silent vs open, but I will give a definitive answer on the beer. Shiner is king. ;D

Miller Lite is better....lol.

all beer is like a open mouth dog it leaves a bad taste in your mouth lol

Personally I don't like open I have a cur that is and don't hunt her because of it but she will flat stop a hog so going to try and use her as a help dog to stop runners

just my opinnion but i think there sum advantages for each kind
when using hounds u get a louder mouth and u can tell where they r but if ur hunting a property thats been dogged a lot hog learn to split when they hear a dog bark but i love a dog that finds hog no mater the breed

To be more specific I like bud lite best and miller lite second best. O0

I like cur dogs that can smoke a track and shutdown a hog. two or 3 barks when they first strike a hot track to bring in the rest of the pack is real nice plus I know what is going on right then and there. I like them silent after that but if the hog breaks bay a little bark here and there is ok.

I do not like a cold nosed open trailing dog that barks every breath and takes an hour to jump the hog....By that time the hog is out of the county.... >:(

No right or wrong answer here, but whatever you like personally and what works for you and the areas you hunt. But BEER is GOOD!!!!! don't have a favorite though prefer budlight or shiner when whiskey isn't available :P

Be it that i dont hunt open country on horseback etc., I have smaller spots and dont like to hunt all dang night i will stick with silent dogs.

I have a friend in oklahoma that has to hunt hounds to find the 1 hog in 3,000 acres---he says

You get on a big piece of land and their ain't nothin better than a good hound race, but I don't have that to hunt so I have curs.

They all have their purpose.

I like a silent dog myself. Seen some very good open dogs tho.

Which ever you prefer.As long as its a good dog,shouldnt matter.Its like asking,if bobtail dogs are better than long tailed dogs.Or yellow dogs better than brindle.IMO.  ;D

  I like a silent dog but dont mind a semi open dog, I have a hound that opens as she strikes then shuts up till lookin at a hog. She will open in hot sign, Dont like the full open every step barking hounds but if they get the job done thats all that matters.

I like my dogs same as my beer, cheap or free. That's why I like to keep it NATURAL. It's hard to beat a good cheap dog or a NATTYpack.

Fellas, I hate to tell y'all this, but there's only one King of Beers... it says so right here on the bottle. ;D

This may come as a shock to those of you who believe all I drink is hot earl grey tea and Starbucks mochas, but when I was like 17 my boyfriend's dad gave me my first beer. It was a lonestar (not light) in a can and I got a taste for it. Over the years I acquired a taste for dark beer, and shiner is at the top of the pile. It is especially yummy with a dollup of cajeta in it to bring out the sweet undertones.

I like a dog silent on track with a big fat bawl mouth when it is staring down a hog. I also like coconut rum in my pina colada, pink polish on my dogs' nails, and the ugliest pair of green athletic shorts that have yellow iron on letters on them and come down to my knees to sleep in. The bottom line is that we all like what we like and there's no right or wrong answer to the question.

Ahhh  Aladrot... you just gave me a fond flashback of all the poor... dead.... drunk.... Armadillos I used to see.... cradling a "Lonestar" in that "classic texas serene pose"  on the side of lonesome country highway....

......back when i used to train and haul horses back an forth to OK City... that always made me grin going down the highway at 3 o'clock in the morning ;D.... Never failed... just when I thought I couldn't be any more in the middle of nowhere.... one of my fallen armadillo friends would come along... lonestar slumped across his chest.... letting me know.... I was "still" not that far from civilization.... :D

Yeah, I must say that I have adorned dead dillos with beer bottles myself. I think it must be a Texas thing.

I agree with most that it is what you like to hunt behind that is best.  If they find hogs and you have fun then it is all good.


As far a s beer goes I know the best beer is free beer!!!!i think we can all agree on that.

I 2nd that I'm a poor white boy i dont have a tracking system lol i have one opened dog an the rest are silent so when i hear two of them barkin we got pork and the foot race is on

Its what ever works for u. I like silent dogs and other peoples beer. I do have a mt cur that yaps on track but it is not ever step. But i get on a bunch of hogs that have been dogged before and as soon as they hear her they are gone. So i am forced to leave her at the house. And there is nothing wrong with some natty light a few days before i get paid. but after that its shiner or bud light

In my own oppinion (what ever that is worth) i think that both open and silent dogs can be hog finding machines. However, I prefer sillent dogs because all of that noise gets on my last nerve.  8)
