Title: Torn ears on hogs
Post by: levibarcus on July 15, 2010, 04:24:16 pm
How do yall keep the hogs ears from getting infected and getting maggots in them when  the dogs tear them up if you want to keep the hog?

Treat it just like u would a cut dog.  But they sure don't like it.  If in a pen rig a push pole and give him antibiotics.  Works but is a pain and u have to be quick with that pole

They will heal same if you keep them then as they would if you turned them back loose

I usually keep them in the stock trailer for a few days, maybe that is the problem since they can't get in the mud and keep the flies off. I know they don't all die when you turn them back loose. I should build a hog pen with a dirt floor.

Man, I lost a lot of hogs because of this...

Fought hogs tryin' to doctor them and still had trouble...

Finally tried a can of "wasp spray".... the stuff that shoots 20 or so feet...

Haven't had any die since.... AND I don't even got to get in the pen!!!!  ;D

But I agree, if a hog can get to mud, they won't have any problems

Man, I've had hogs that had nothin' but 2 vamire holes and still died from the white grub... these big blow flies are rank around my house... startin' to think they're trained ;D

I don't like a dog to chew one up either... just a few generations away from having one  ;D

when we used to have our catchdog competitions we would have them once a month and the sunday afterwards we would catch all the hogs and doctor them...we would put diesel and turpentine in a pump sprayer and spray them down good and put furazone on them and juice them up with sum antibiotics turn them back loose in the holding pen and would just have a pole drove in the ground or a tree and nail old carpet or burlap to them and soak them in burnt motor oil and let them rub it down...i mean we had close to 75 hogs in that pen so we had to always keep replacing he oil...we just went to a mechanic shop and dropped off a few five gallon buckets with lids and gave him like 5 dollars abucket and he was more than willing to fill up the buckets up and get rid of the oil...hope this helps yall out
