Title: Hurricane Ike Post by: Mike on September 11, 2008, 07:32:33 pm I know this is the dog hunting board, but several of our members are in the path... including us.
I want everyone to stay safe an not do anything to put themselves or their families in harm's way... be careful out there. My wife and kids are already at her sister's in Dallas. I'm gonna stick around till tomorrow... latest reports have the storm heading east on every update. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Noah on September 11, 2008, 07:45:35 pm I've been watching it too, looks like there's probably gonna be some bad surge on the N side of impact. Get plenty of water put up(cap full of bleach to a gallon of water will make it keep), and a generator if you haven't already got one. We were without power for 4 wks in 04.... no generator, no wind, and 90' with 100% humidity.... makes for a long night... Just think about having to camp for a few wks and what you would need to bring.
Make sure to put "collars" on your horses if you leave them behind, with your name, phone#, and address if the fences get knocked down and they get out. Hopefully he boggs down before impact... Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: shawn on September 11, 2008, 08:40:39 pm yeah, yall be safe, guess we'll get some rain and wind here in east texas, when rita come thru that was why i decided to have ALL our pole pine trees cut, i saw those sobs swaying, i cant imagine what it would be like near the coast.

Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Noah on September 11, 2008, 10:11:25 pm When hurricane Floyd came by us(FL) in '99(second largest evacuation in US history) we had bumper to bumper traffic in front of our property(we live in the middle of the state, high ground). To have family after family drive up to your house and plead for shelter is a sobering experience. I have never, before or since, seen such fear in my fellow man's eyes..... Luckily, Floyd turned and skirted our coast, otherwise there would have been many killed.
Do not take this storm lightly. The roof is the first to be damaged, do all you can do to secure any loose edges. Cut all overhanging trees/branches that will be blown down damaging all structure below. Make sure you have a chainsaw/mixed fuel when you drive. One big tree between you and where you need to be can be dangerous. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: matt_aggie04 on September 11, 2008, 10:20:53 pm QSL on the chainsaw and mix gas.....I got BIG trees all around my house and barn and my kennels. I hate to think what it will look like come Sat am. I love having everything in the trees but I may be rethinking that after this.
Matt Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Noah on September 11, 2008, 10:28:36 pm What's QSL, I don't know that one?
BTW, your roof is the weakest link, tarps and tap-cons will help with preventing "de-shingling" if you take the time. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: matt_aggie04 on September 11, 2008, 10:38:58 pm It is the same as saying 10-4, it is a two-radio language the same as 10-4 and 10-20 etc QSL means you understand or you agree and QRX means what is your location, there is a 10 language and a Q language used on the radio. Just threw it out there to mix things up a little haha

Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: matt_aggie04 on September 12, 2008, 08:05:55 pm Galveston and areas close to there are without power and the rest will be without power before daylight I am sure....I am washing clothes and about to take the last shower I am sure I will be able to take for the next few days. My real concern is for my buds down on the coast that didn't leave, my prayers are with all of yall down there, Clay, Stacy, Chris, Mandi my thought and prayers are with you..............Hurricanes are NO fun :'(
Matt Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Circle C on September 12, 2008, 09:26:32 pm Sitting here in LaPorte right now.... 2 miles from the Houston ship channel, 5 miles from Galveston Bay, 26 ft elevation. First storm I have ever attempted to ride out. I feel like I am prepared, somewhat. 14k diesel generator, 5500 watt gas, 2000 watt gas 170 gallons of diesel, and 60 gallons of gas. plenty of food and water for about 7-10 days.House is boarded up and all 4 trucks are full of fuel.
My phone has been ringing steady for 2 days, and I have a few people to thank for their offers of help. Mike, Matt, Cody Childs, Des, Krystal, Clay, and others that I am sure I have forgotten...Thanks for the offers of help, places to stay and board my livestock, etc. Might not be my smarted move, choosing to stay, but at this point I am here for the ride... :o Circle C Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: hunterdan58 on September 12, 2008, 10:29:31 pm Well, every thing is nice and calm up here. you guys down south our prayers

Waiting for the rain to come.
Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: uglydog on September 13, 2008, 02:04:52 pm Anybody heard from Mike? I was thinking about him this morning watching the satelite view.
Thomas' company evacuated late Thursday night to Conroe, not the best place to have gone, IMO. They have no power. My mother is near Navasota and they have no power either. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: aussiedogger on September 13, 2008, 05:28:38 pm you's even made our news. lol. looks pretty rough :o
Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Noah on September 13, 2008, 05:31:32 pm you's even made our news. lol. looks pretty rough :o Does Australia get hurricanes/typhoons? Never heard of any... Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: T-Bob Parker on September 13, 2008, 06:21:10 pm well, here in manvel we got a bunch of trees down some shingles missing and stuff like that. during the big stuff i brought gator and chief in the house and this mornin as soon as the nasty stuff passed i turned the dogs out to fend for themselves shortly thereafter i heard them choppin and bayin their buts off looked outside and they were barking at chiefs kennel, grabbed the 22 ready to go kill a snake but it was a big ole skunk in his doghouse...now i got debris all over the yard and the whole place stinks.

Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Circle C on September 16, 2008, 03:53:18 pm Update-
Lost 1/2 of roof on my horse barn, lost the roof on my hay barn, and the roof on one loafing shed. Only damage to the house is some lost shingles. I lost 25,000 square feet of roof at my office, and had water in the office. My power came back on Saturday night at 9:30. The next morning I dispatched my generators and fuel to others without power. Gasoline, water, and Ice are in short supply. Clay lost a number of trees, but now has power. Mike does not have power, or running water (he is in the boonies, and has well water) He had to drive to Centerville yesterday to get fuel and ice. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Mike on September 16, 2008, 09:44:52 pm We made it!!!!!!!
It's a mess... but no damage done to the house. We may be with out power for a couple of weeks. Big thanks out to Clay and Stacy... they got power up this morning and brought their generator out to us this afternoon. We've been bbqing and drinking beer every evening... enjoying this cool weather and cooking what's left in the deep freeze. Temps in the 50's at night... oughta be in the woods! Krystal, I talked to Thomas yesterday... Conroe wasn't the place to evacuate too... it's crazy up here now. Kinda feels like a war zone going into town. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: uglydog on September 16, 2008, 10:43:35 pm I am so Glad to hear that EVERYBODY survived. all that other stuff can be replaced, inconvenient but sure makes you think how lucky we are.
I was so stressed out feeling helpless, not being able to reach alot of folks for days to know how they were. Knowing we did not get even a half inch of rain or any really bad wind. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: mley1 on September 17, 2008, 01:22:57 pm We got power at my place Tuesday night. Before then we were on generator. Had the generator hooked up to the well pump also. I just had to rewire it to run on 110. There was a diagram on the side of the pump to show you how.
The house did not sustain any visible damage. I lost some shingles and boards off of the shed and pump house. The chicken coop and chickens made it. The rabbits made it. Melissa and the kids came back home Sunday night. They had gone to Rusk. I had plenty of supplies and the generator going so I had them come home. I've been working 14-16hr shifts at the Region 3 Command Center for TDCJ. We had lots of damage at some units. Several units are still on generators. But, no staff or inmate deaths. I go back to work again tonight. Looks like long hours for the next several weeks. Melissa is scheduled to go back to work on Friday. The kids are probably going back to school next week. We were blessed. God was looking over us at the Ley house. I hope everyone else is doing ok. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: sam on September 17, 2008, 04:10:50 pm well made it through the storm here in cleveland they are saying for the one's who live out where i do it might be october before we see power hopefully sooner i hope just have alot of tree's down but house is ok
Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: matt_aggie04 on September 17, 2008, 10:07:11 pm Say a prayer for those of us with the light company. I know its stressful not having lights but for those with the same problems or worse having to work 16hrs at a whack with no time off till ALL the power is restored is extra hard. People are wearing thin.
Keep the faith and hope that we can all make it through this. I am so happy to hear that everyone was safe and the lack of structural damage was also great to hear. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Mike on September 18, 2008, 12:50:20 pm well made it through the storm here in cleveland they are saying for the one's who live out where i do it might be october before we see power hopefully sooner i hope just have alot of tree's down but house is ok I'm glad y'all made it. I talked to your daddy and he said his roof didn't fare to well. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Cull Buck on September 18, 2008, 04:17:25 pm Ike kicked my butt. Blew away half my roof, had total ceiling failure in the master bedroom and bathroom, all kinds of water damage to the walls, the floor and personnel property. That's life near the coast. What can you do other than clean up what you can, line up contractors and wait for the insurance adjuster.
Matt, send your boys to Pearland. My lights still no workie. ;) Hope you can hang in there. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Jasonmac on September 18, 2008, 09:34:23 pm that was one bad ass storm next time they hollar hurricane my ass is leaving the deep east texas

I hate to hear that Richard... glad no one was hurt. We just got our power back up yesterday. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: aladatrot on September 22, 2008, 01:57:57 pm Hey, I know we all took pretty bad hits with IKE either by losing property, losing power, or the like - but there are folks out there who lost everything they had and in some cases their own lives. Makes me realize how blessed we really were that we are all still here. I got to thinking that a week ago Friday, people were just business as usual. By Saturday morning, it was utter devastation.
Bad deal. M PS Hang in there Matt, I think the power companies are doing a fine job of getting power up and running as quickly as possible. m Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: hogdoggin91 on September 22, 2008, 06:34:59 pm i agree with mandi we just got our power back today(10 days without) and i still think thats fast, they are doin a good jobs restoring power back to everyone, faster than i thought it would happen
Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Bryant on September 22, 2008, 09:50:05 pm I'm glad everyone physically is okay.
I was thinking about some of you guys Saturday night. I stayed up most of the night watching the news programs as it came ashore. I didn't even plan a hunt Saturday morning because of the 3"-5" rain along with the "tropical storm" force winds that were predicted here in Temple/Belton. I believe I got a total of 7 1/2 drops, along with a couple of gusts. Earlier in the week when it was looking like Port A might be in the path, I made a quick run down and moved all the patio furniture in, secured the house and brought home my nephews boat that had been left down. I did get to stop by and make a quick hunt with Douglas Mason on the way home so it was not a complete wasted trip! We did have quite a few evacuee's in town for a few days. My son's school was scheduled to have a back-to-school BBQ for the kids and families on Saturday afternoon, but the school decided to cancel and donate the food to the Mayborn Center here in town that was housing evacuee's. Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: kp on September 23, 2008, 08:01:25 pm Diana and I live in Spring, and we got hit pretty hard in this area. We caught the western edge of the eye as it went up I-45. Our house went through the storm with minimal damage, with only one (dead) tree falling on the back of the house, and one falling in the back yard. We got power here Saturday night, just hours after I told myself it would be the last night I slept at home without a/c. Diana was in Pennsylvania when the storm hit, so she missed out on all the fun.
Sunday, day after the hurricane passed through... We decided to head out to Livingston to check on the lakehouse. As we were driving through the neighborhood, viewing all of the destruction for the first time, my 3.5 year old daughter screams out, "look daddy, pretty flowers! Amongst the fallen 30-40 year old pine trees fallen down in the entrance of the subdivision she spotted the landscaping. ;D Diana went up to the ranch over the weekend, and we were spared any damages up there. One stand lost it's roof, and the hogs seemed to find something they really liked around the camp house to eat!!! Glad to finally get my life back in order enough to get online! kp Title: Re: Hurricane Ike Post by: Mike on September 23, 2008, 08:06:25 pm Diana and I live in Spring, and we got hit pretty hard in this area.
