Title: Why do you hunt with dogs?
Post by: DangerZone on July 30, 2010, 04:38:42 pm
Wondering what makes some of us work so hard at this type of hunting?....  thrill? ..... challange?.... board with everyday life? .... the dog's?  ....     For me I've hunted most all legal game in Texas over the last 33 yr's. Right now hog hunting for me is less about how many or how big a hog and more about taking the pup and training it myself to find the hog.......... {Three hogs}------ one hog could be an accident/.......two hogs could be a fluke/ ..... but that third hog ????? could feel real good!!! ......  I started three years ago with catahoula pups lost one to a highway accident last year just as he was really getting started, took me amost a year now but I'm right there again with my BMC i have now ...IT'S Crazy I almost can't sleep at nite for wanting to put him in the wood every nite!! ;D ;D

Because Cats dont bay worth a Flip!!! :)  (Couldnt resist)

Seriously, I hunt for the enjoyment of working dogs and I pretty sure everyone here is in the same boat unless they have someone else that takes care of and trains there dogs for them, then they might not do it for the love of dogs and seeing them progress.

Because I found out there were dogs as crazy as me. The dogs that want to hunt as bad as I do. If you told me I could never hunt again... So I don't want a dog to feel that horrible. I love the pursuit as much as the dog. I feel stir crazy when I ain't hunting. So me and my dogs both benefit.

I love huning with dogs period. I have always had dogs and probably will always have dogs until I die. To me nothing is more pleasurable than watching dogs do what they love to do.  No matter what game it is. At one time I had about 40 dogs on my hill. Deer hounds, rabbitt hounds, fox hounds, and some palin ole potlickers. Just love dogs I guess.

I like to see a good dog work in the woods.

My job;  Is to set my  dogs up for success by checking the weather conditions including the wind direction and then making a plan of attack to increase the probablity of striking and catching a hog. I try to get in the dogs head to see what he is thinking and why he is doing what he is doing.  once I learn how the dog hunts then the plan takes into consideration the dogs strengths and it's weak points to increase our success.

The dogs job is to execute the plan and hopefully make it happen.

It's a game... a great game...

I grew up hunting with my grandfathers, deer dogs, hog dogs, squirrel dogs and rabbit dogs.. I decided when I got a place of my own that I would carry on the tradition and show my kids what it is like to hunt with dogs... Plus, my huntin season never ends now.. Boy my wife is glad when I tell her that... ;D

because you get to direct raw instinct into a precision hog hunter. the pay off of seeing that little pup turn into a good dog due to all the hard work and time put into them. plus rifle hunting was gettin too easy for me. haha. but since i substituted a rifle with a knife i couldn't hit a barn door with a shotgun :p lol

We enjoy hunting with dogs, cause of the thrill, adrenaline rush you get when dogs start barking. Then you hear the squealing of a hog being caught. The excitement of family and friends getting to watch first hand what its like. And all the above as one post said!

I like to get out drink a few cold ones and BS with the guys while out in the woods!!
The adrenaline rush when you are waiting to hear a caught hog and it sounds like a tornado coming down in a palmeeter head!!

I took a friend for the first time and we ended up gettin on a big boar that smoked us, anyway but my buddy said it sounded like jurassic park in there! LOL! I was the only one walkin in with a knife and he was at least 20 feet back with his gun drawn. LOL It was hilarious!

I used to say it was for the dogs... but if it was just dogs... why am I not raising coon dogs??..... or rabbit dogs??.... or deer dogs??....

What is it about hogs that brings out the qualities in a dog that I associate with and appreciate....  if I could hunt somethin' meaner I probably would....

If it was about killin' hogs they'd all be gone by now

I like hunting anything with dogs and if I can't use a dog I really don't care that much about it. Over the years I have raised and trained labs for ducks and geese. Squirrel dogs for squirrel. I have hunted coons and deer with hounds.

One time I started adding up the number of bird dogs I have personally owned and quit after I got to 200. I had some big leases and put in lots of miles hunting, training, and trialing. It is expensive and when my boy started college I had to sell out most of my dogs and equipment.

The quail are just about gone and I just quit them. One time per year I go to South Dakota hunting pheasant, grouse, prairie chicken, and huns.

This good friend of mine kept trying to get me to go hog hunting with him but I had heard all of the stories and was hesitant to go. Anyway, I went and that trip cost me alot of money. It was like crack or herione would be I guess because I was hooked big time.

I had nothing to hunt with but a desire. Within 2 weeks I bought a 4 wheeler and a dog. Hunting with another guys dog is like kissing your sister. That is all I have been doing for the last 14 years.

For me the question is why the hell not. I have done alot of things in my life and hogdoggin is the biggest thrill I have ever had. The dogs are the best part. There is nothing like a dog wanting to hunt and please you so bad that he will take on a hog 4 times his size and strength. Then after the hunt is over all he wants is a pat on the head an a "good dog".  You might as well put me in the ground if I can't hunt with my dogs anymore. It makes all the problem in life go away and makes life worth living.

Well it's not for the heat or all the money I spend on dog food and vet bills and care . And it's not for all the ticks and red bugs and snakes and  briars. And it's not for all the drama over huntin spots and dogs and what kind of dog is best . And it's not for all the equipment and maintenance on trucks and atv's and rangers and all the gas I buy for them.. And it's not for all the women I have lost over it.  Why the hell DO I hunt with dogs?

To me its just the enjoyment of "dog hunting" in general.I like to rabbit hunt behind a good pack of beagles. I like to deer hunt behind a good pack of Walker dogs. I like to coon hunt behind some good blueticks. I like to bear hunt behind a good pack of Plotts. But i LOVE to hog hunt with my cur dogs. To me it just doesnt get any better.
