Title: OLD "Gal Leg" Spurs....tell me what you know Post by: matt_aggie04 on September 20, 2008, 09:52:42 pm My pop died about 8 years ago and my granny died about a month ago so we have spent alot of time going through all the stuff in their house. My pop always had horses around his whole life and made his living breaking horses as a young man. I found these old "Gal Leg" spurs and was wondering if anyone out there could tell me how old they thought they were etc. It is possible that these are not old and something that he just traded for to a friend in a bind but they are VERY worn and have been used ALOT so I have to feel like they are "authentic".

The rowels are pretty soft from a trainer's perspective... which might indicate a set of spurs for a novice rider or a specific horse. Check for play in the center pin which will indicate prolonged use/wear. The "leg" spurs are highly collectible, and I'd love to have a pair built for myself one day. Although these lack in detail, the fact that they belonged to your grandfather should warrant "trophy case" status, thanks for sharing.
Title: Re: OLD "Gal Leg" Spurs....tell me what you know Post by: txboardog on September 21, 2008, 02:39:09 pm Look inside of the heel band to see if there are any makers marks or names anywhere they are definetly handmade and look pretty old they should be worth quite a bit if they have a makers mark money value just depends on who made them but centimental value they are priceless
