EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

I headed out fairly late Sunday morning with a couple of old friends and one of their new friends for a quick hog hunt before we got started on putting up some deer stands and making some small food plots. 

I put my three curs and Bud's Jagd on top of the box and left the hounds and bulldog in the box.  I began cruising around the cornfields and after we got halfway around the second field the dogs began their dance so I cut them all the ones on top loose except the Jagd.  A minute or so went by and that jagd wasnt happy with me at all so I let him go as well.  About that time the curs opened up and were bayed a few seconds later back in the alligator slough!  I turned Blaze loose and he locked that one up and we got her stuck.  As I was getting the Ranger to pull her out of the bayou, Squirt (the Jagd) came by me right behind a small boar.
No sooner than I got the Ranger cut off I heard the hog squealing and my friends hollering for me to turn the bulldog back loose, so I turned Blaze back loose and headed back down in the slough.

When I got down there the bulldog was caught on the dead hog and Squirt was riding on the back of that little hog with a mouth full ear and my big cur, JW, had the other ear.  I gave the bulldog a little "Attention Getter" and he went over and caught that one for my friends and they took care of it themselves.  We loaded the hogs up and then realized the curs and Jagd were still on hogs so we started towards them. 

As we were getting close a good boar crossed right in front of us and the dogs werent too far behind him.  I unleashed the plotts and my old cur and they applied some fresh pressure and we ended up baying him up about a mile later.  I sent Blaze in and he sealed that deal, but there wasnt any squealing, only the sounds of dogs being slammed!  We hightailed it in there to find the dogs caught in those darn tie vines and the hog was backing up away from the dogs with Blaze attached to his face.  As I went to leg him he pulled out of Blaze's Grip (leaving part of his face behind) turned towards me and charged.  I side stepped him and went for his back legs but got my arms tangled up in those damn vines too!

We quickly grabbed the bulldog before he followed the other dogs off into the CRP.  We looked around and there was a ton of blood so we started cutting dogs off at roads and checking them and the only dog that had a nick was the male plott of Buds and it wasnt very bad at all, at least not to leave that much blood behind.  After another hour of the hog running the same track back and forth my main dog just came out so I am hoping that the hog succomb to his injuries because it wasnt even 7:30 and the hunt had only been in progress for three hours. 

In the end it was a great August hunt and I was disappointed about the boar but the dogs did great.  The only bad thing about the whole hunt was I some how managed to erase my SD card while checking cameras that afternoon and lost some great pics of the hogs and dogs, but I was able to get some phone pics from our guest, but none with the dogs.

I appreciate it fellas!  With this heat we have been having I almost threw in the towel on trying to hit my goal of 200 hogs for 2010.  Now I only have 12 to go before bow season gets here.  I am keeping my fingers crossed! ;D

Yep, I have been on them since they got loose almost 10 yrs ago.  I have been through a lot of dogs to get what it takes to catch them on a consistant basis, or should I say I have learned over the years to be a better handler and hunter.:)  They are San Diego Zoo stock and some Polish import stock.  Needless to say the seperate the so so dogs from the hog dogs in my opinion.
The older I get the harder it gets!  I used to be worried about the dogs, but now I am starting to worry more about me strokin out!LOL

Thanks for the kind comments fellas.  It is tough to catch hogs this time of year and I have been fortunate.  Now If I can just erradicate them from this area as I have been comissioned to do I will be able to enjoy my weekends doing watersports other than swimming with the snaggle toothed gators.
