Title: Cow Work
Post by: matt_aggie04 on August 15, 2010, 07:02:41 pm
Went and helped Chance this morning gather some cattle, had a great time and learned quite a bit.  It was HOT, when I left it was 102 and the heat index was 110 and they were loading out cattle.  Thanks guys and look forward to the next time.

Good pics Matt.

I was sweating to death at 3:30 this morning, I can imagine what it felt like after the sun came up.

Mike, I did maybe a fraction of the work the others did today because I can't take the heat any more and I am still hot right now.  I don't know how everyone and their horses and the dogs made it through today without a heat related injury.  I am pretty sure it was the hottest day of the summer.....

Bryant,

I am pretty sure Crystal got some good pics of the dogs working.

I had a good time, but damn it was hot. Started the day at 4:00am, and unsaddled the old man at 7:30pm. I was still reading 99 degrees at 6:00 this evening.

I will post some pics tomorrow after I cool off. :)

Matt,

I think I took like 536 or 540 pics. I have some pretty neat ones, and many I need to crop and edit to make some wall hangers. It's darn sure not my abilities, it's my camera taking up a lot of slack. I like oddball subjects, I think I have 20 pics of various cows that caught my eye, and several of those were in the process of bawling. There is just so much emotion in those pics of bawling cattle. I got some great pics of Crystal and her daughter Tristan - it looked like mother/daughter bonding that in my imagination would likely be something to spark some memories for Tristan later on. My favorite of that run of pics didn't make it onto the ethd site, but I will crop and edit and give Crystal the hard copy to do what she wants with.

There was a man there helping named Charlie that caught my lens more than anyone or anything else. To me, he was just cowboy. He looked the part and darned sure worked the part. My camera loved him and I tried to capture candid shots of him working. Pure Cowboy.

I'll go through and do some editing and maybe post up some of my favorites from the weekend. I'm not one much for action shots, I like to play with the more off the wall stuff.

Cheers!
M

Yeah, I knew you would not like seeing yourself as the subject of the camera. The problem is that some people just photograph well. Unfortunately for you, you are one of those people. My camera likes you because the pictures usually turn out well.

I was really referring to my strange taste is photos because I would hate for someone to be following this post hoping for some good action shots. I like the different type of photos.

Awesome pics! the "strangest" shots always turn out the best ... especially when the subject doesnt know its being photographed.

I sure dont miss those hot summers in the cow pens ;D I wouldnt know what to think if I had to get out and spend a few hours on a horse in this heat!

Good looking donkey lol I remember riding one named Billy Jack when I was about that little guys age after my shetland went on to greener pastures.  He had a cross on his back but was far from an angel

Donk is as much an angel as I have seen for taking care of that young man the way he does. Beats all I have seen,  especially   for a donkey. I have a standing offer to buy him from Cattle as soon as he can do without him.

Good as long as you and Chris are on my team!!
You know since Chris was teaching my cows bad habbits by running up on the fence from them they just wanted something to eat!

Title: Re: Cow Work
Post by: Circle C on August 16, 2010, 08:58:32 pm
If I had a gun on me, I would have had to write a check for #711. Would have dropped her in the pen, and drug her out for the buzzards.

735#....Told you I would go broke buying out of the pasture. ;) As for me running up a fence, I think ole Buttercup had my number. You ever seen a fat boy move as fast as I did yesterday?

Matt,
I think once word gets out that #711 is out of the ranch rodeo rotation, Chance might have a few more teams enter up this year.

With the heat index, the Houston area was the hottest place in the nation Sunday according to the news!  I guess when its time to work cattle its time to work cattle but I think my hat of choice would have been one of those umbrella hats I see old people gardening in!!! Yall are crazy!
Circle C, Bad cows are a real motivator for this fat boy also! Its funny how they can make us reach speeds we never thought we were capable of!!! Don’t ever under estimate us fat guys people!!! ;D

She needs a psychiatrist but ya'll can cure her of her problem! The main cure is to just stand there and try to speak to her in a nice low tone voice!!

Just hope you don't strike out that could be bad!!Even if you was to bunt her that still could be bad!
I had broke  a 1" pipe made for a spray rig over a cows nose while I was spraying them for fly's on a concreate pen!! She stated with me knocked me down started slipping and slideing all over the top  of me on the wet concrete I started crawling to the fence as she was hitting me and then she starter whipping me up against the soild wood fence so I cralwed back to the center of the pen and my uncle came and got her off me!!Everyone was hollering for me to get out of the pen but there was no chance of standing up with her knocking the fire out of me!!They said why did you crawl back too the pen I said it was hurting me against the fence she was just hitting me in the center!!

When I was in school I worked some weekends at the Navasota Sale Barn. It didn’t take long to figure out that the bull alley was the best one to work!! Those cows would get you when you didn’t expect it and they really do hurt!!! lol

LOL. No but I have done some hog hunting on his property in Washington County when I was in my 20's. And yes I had permission!
I work for a very large black guy named Blue. I had a blast and would have probably worked there for free!

So can I asked what happened to Mr Richardson?

Chance,

I know news moves slow in the piney woods, but Kenny died Dec 2007.    I think the tin can and string is old technology.

You really ought to get a tv, or radio, or at least a phone so that you can get your news a little faster.  ;D

Mr. Martin I do not sell dogs and I do not get rid of anything that I like!!If I like it then it will die here if I don't well it will die here!!! ;)
I do give a few dogs away each year but there are very few started dogs!! I cull hard and don't like scattering dogs all over the place!!

In the video you sent me what breed of dogs were those working!!

They have been known to do that but we never mind takeing the time out of our busy day to tie a hog then finish working cows!!

Even though I told Crystal one day we were going to go on a cow hunt and she had something to do and ask how long we would be!!
Well when she called at 2pm after we had started a 6am we had done tie oh about 11 hogs!!I asured her after the last one we were going to go find the cows and we did!!But I got in trouble she said if you were going to find cows why did you take the catch dog and vest!!Them some bad cows!!LOL

CWARD- I understand about the dogs.         The dogs in the video are catahoula. I got one here and there through the years. I don't keep but 5 or 6. One of those dogs in the video over heated the other day. she wondered off, layed down and never got up again. I'm still upset at myself for that, I should have made them go get water And rest a few minutes ( rookie mistake ). Another one of those dogs I got from Chris Shivers, And she worked really well, but a man came along and made me an offer I could'nt refuse so i sold her ( another rookie mistake ). Now im kinda in a bind for a good cow dog. I've Got a few freebies to try for a while, if they don't work out i will give them back. Just keep me in mind. Thanks.

I don't know Chris, but I need to get in touch with him. I really learned a lesson selling that dog. That was a big mistake. Hey Ninja, Your more popular around my house than you might think. My wife and I were joking around the other night when she said "Martin you need help", I looked at her and said "baby you need a little BoarNinja'in"   She looked at me like I was crazy. I think she thought it was a new love making position.

LMAO!!! Sounds like you keep your wife as confused as I do mine!!!

I think most of us can look back in regrete to a dog we had to sell for some reason or another when we were young! I know I have. Lesson learned!!! Good dogs dont grow on trees do they?

Good luck on the dog search martin!
