Title: Horse Collar......
Post by: matt_aggie04 on September 15, 2010, 11:22:16 am
Could someone please explain why people put collars on their horse?  Usually wide leather strap around the neck up high on their neck.
The horse on the far right is a good example of what I am talking about.

i assume they're hobbles, not collars. should be rings or slots in em to figure eight around the horses legs.

who are the guys in the pic?

Well there you go, I should have known I wrong haha.  If you look closely though, the other two horses pictured have the "collars" on as well and they don't look long enough to be hobbles??

Matt, I have seen broodmares wearing collars with #s on them in large herds. I guess rather than leave a halter on one, not sure, but I always guessed it was to keep track of information, breeding worming ect.

I had this collar made and I am thniking I really don't like the strap that runs over the neck.  I am going to cut it off and add another strap to the back of it and attach it higher on my saddle.

Looks like a neck rope to me guys. If you were doctorig calves, and were alone, you would run your rope thru the neck rope and tie-off. This keeps your horse facing  in the direction of you and what you roped. It also prevents the horse from turning and dragging what you roped away from you While you tie or doctor. In other words, it keeps the horse faced-up. But I could be wrong.

You should check out all the pics and click on all the blue names and ranch names, they take you to more pics and ranch stories.

yea their hobbles, some leave the tail hanging and some tuck it under its self. you'll see un made of rope too, work good for a neck rope like was said above and the reason most guys put them on the neck is its a handy place thats out of the way, plus i've rode some horses that you didnt want to spend any more time standing on the ground than you had to behind the front legs so you didnt want to hang hobbles off your back d's like some guys do
