Title: Catahoulas in Oz - 16 Boars 4 sows - nothing under 70kg (150lbs)
Post by: Outback Catahoulas Austra on October 31, 2010, 07:29:27 am
Had a chap who has bought a couple of dogs off me in the past give me a call a few weeks ago! Wanted to fly up from Victoria(southern Australia) to watch a few of the dogs from my kennels work & see how it's done up here.  Some customers buy the Cats for finding ability & to add a bit of noise to there lugging team. The downfall to that in most cases many will lug in the pack environment, As his male does... So he was keen to see how a team of "bailers" work good boars in different types of terrain...From open flood plain, to creek beds, thick grass & rocky ridges...Day or night..........So that's what he got...
Here's a few pics from the Fri & Sat hunt. We hunted from 4pm till 9pm Friday & sunrise till 10am & 4pm till 9pm Saturday.
4 Dogs used. They were- my main dog Opal (red leopard - Not yet 3yrs-my imported bitch), Bo (Blue Leopard - her son 16mths) & litter mates Toby & JO (black & tans about 15mths).

Great hunt.  Assume pics.  How do you catch so many hogs consistently in two days?  I've hunted all over Texas for many years and short of baying a large sounder and shotting them I have never gotten 16 in a weekend.  Is it the terrain, the hog population, do the hogs bay easier, better dogs what do you think?

thanks leonriverboy - A bit of everything you mentioned mate. Numbers will decrease as our "wet seaon" takes hold! The dogs are young but really working well. The part of the station (ranch) that we are hunting is about 150000 acres with various dams, swamps & creeks..... The climate we live in is "Tropical" so the temperature "never" drops below 28 degrees celcius at night & always above 38 degrees during the day & between 80-95% humidity. So, where theres water a dog/s with  decent scenting ability will usually find something working the area with in minutes....
So, yeah the pig population is good too atm! The challenge is teaching the dogs that we want the big boars & we don't want to be running after them too far.... :'(
So, find em, pull em up & don't let them run...is the expected!  ;)

so what did the chap think about the bailers vs luggers as he is used to hunting? do you think that style of hunting is catching on and will be more popular in Oz in the future?

very nice hunt and pics! thanks for sharing.

Yeah, i think it'll be the way of the future here...Maybe still a decade away....The greens movement (politics) are pushing hard to ban catch dogging of pigs...
Here's a couple of vids ---  :)
In this video my hunting mate & Shannon got sick of waiting for me to take safe shot & it was quick clear the dogs were wearing him down..They decided to grab him while bailed. Was pretty amusing to watch  :Drogar-LaughLBG:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9hmFdg4WqQ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k9hmFdg4WqQ)

This one they ran on from. They jumped a few minutes earlier & pulled up a 80kg sow. We were almost back to the car talking about how nice the beer will be (it was 36 degrees & 90% humidity) When i looked at the tracker & noticed Opal & Toby 800 away. Then a bark & this was the result ..............

cheers guys -
one last video to enjoy  ;D
The dogs hit one of these boars up at the edge of a swamp. Whilst they were working him we noticed a boar sneak out the back of the swamp. Once he was dispatch we ran the dogs towards the other boars exit path. You can see Opal hit the scent, do a loop & follow the scent. 500 mtrs later they hit him & turn him back to the water......

baycrazy - it's just clear flexible water hose. 2"
You should be able to buy it at any decent hardware store!

never come close but theres plenty of people that've caught upto 70 good sized pigs in a weekend. in australia's western cropping country. its that open on the wheat stubble they can run whole mobs down.
