Thats interesting Mike.  I would hate to try and make a show like that into a sucess.  To tell the truth I don't really think something like that is even a good idea.  I dont think Hog dogging will ever be excepted main stream.  Most people will never know enough about it to make an educated opinion about it and even a TV show would not be able to accomplish that.  In my opinion, no matter how respectable of people they get on a show like that it will always get some animal rights extremist stirred up.  And they are the ones that will make the most noise.  Not to mention any TV show will be distorted from reality to make it more interesting and get more viewers.  So I for one would rather not see it go that way.  I think as a whole we are better off preserving and promoting the tradition by just doing our thing in a respectable and responsible manner and recrute newcomers and teach them how to do it the same.  For what its worth I think that kind of show would just stir up more trouble than anything else.  I'd be glad to hear that every one they contact respectfully declines to be on a show like that.  But somehow I don't think that will happen.  Just My 2 cents.

The dogs in the Nat Geo Explorer on Hogzilla were my dogs. I spent two mornings hunting with those people, bayed up a couple of sounders, caught a couple of hogs and took them with a knife. Have you ever tried getting a camera man, sound man and a lady producer in close to a bay on spooky hogs? They told me they were doing a special on wild hogs and never mentioned Hogzilla. When the show came out, they showed about ten seconds of the hunt, then said some people were afraid to go in the woods without a pack of dogs to keep the hogs off them. I was hot and swore they couldn't pay me enough to do another deal like that. I should have known something was up when they put a camera in my face and started asking about how big hogs got and how dangerous they were.

Bigo, that's kind of what happened on our deal... but none of our footage made it on the show. We filmed with the History Channel a few years back for Monster Quest... got some real good footage too.

Im with the other guys on this one. I dont feel that main stream America would take too well to seeing how our dogs and hogs get along. It is nothing like the Swomp People killing gators.

I know PETA is looking for something like this so they have more evidence on how the dogs don't get treated right or how it's animal abuse on the hogs...Gotta train a good dog somehow right? it would be neat in one since but I don't think putting the sport of hog doggin' in jeapordy for a  lil time in the lime light. and Plus I don't live in Texas lol

I first read the post and first thought "this will be a blast".  But then after thinking about it and reading the other posts, I must agree that this is not a good idea.  I do not want to keep our sport in a "closed loop" for the fear of not teaching those who would enjoy our enthusiasm.  However, the people that a show like this would expose are those "few".  And those few are the ones that get riled up and speak louder.  Louder than the actual masses speak when they are not as passionate.  Kind of like our last presidential election. You guys know what I mean.  It would not take much,  just some simple editing, to make this sport we all love a target of those organizations that are so passionate about their cause that they get extremely radical in their fighting methods.  To each his own, and I will not condemn anyone who participates in such an event.  Just be careful.  Remember, radical and controversial topics sell better than mundane ones.

Sorry,  Sam here again.  I want to emphasize that one of my main reasons for my previous post is because it was not The Outdoor Channel, or Uncle Ted, or Wildgame Nation, etc that approached Mike.  It was someone not involved hunting.  I do not think The Deadliest Catch can be compared to "Doggin Texas" or "Dogs Gone Wild".  I do not trust how we will be portrayed. Just my opinion.

There is always somone out there that wants their "15 minutes of fame" and attempt to make themselves look better than everyone else. I can think of one person on top of my head...

I think these people contacted Rex too.

Sounds like a horrible idea.  AND I dread to see who they actually get to do the show and the image they give to hog hunters.

There's little doubt in my mind that ego's will easily convince some people to want to be on TV.

I don't think I'm good enough to be profiled on TV so I wont be auditioning but lemme say this these people will have they're TV show and they're gonna find someone, would you rather it be some trespassing, dog starving leaving injured dogs in the feild, toothless hillbilly or a regular Guy like you and me who catches pigs with dogs?

I talked with the woman from Los Angeles on the same programming, she was to have Dan the fell amike talked to contact me later which I have been avoiding.

She was very clear that they were looking for an "interesting Character" which I told them we were plain and boring. That led me to believe this is not documentary type stuff but looking for entertainment to sell to the networks nad to sell commercials and advertising.
I don't think the plain honest law abiding hunters are going to fit the bill for making it on the air in TV land however thee are a few characters I can think of that would fit the bill. Unfortunately its gonna most likely be the unsavory character representing the whole lot of us in this sport. I hope I am wrong.

I will have to admit that there is one way I would put up with all the cameras and producers tagging along.

here would be my terms, FIRST AND FOREMOST that MIKE ROWE from Dirty Jobs come along and I get to take him to stick/tie a hog. The other would be the ETHD crews be the other hunters that represent hog hunting with dogs, that way if it is aired I know it was not a backwoods, blubbering bloodthirsty drunk redneck representing our sport, so that it could be educational and done in a positive way, not somone looking for 5 minutes of fame and promote themselves. Did I mention I get to take Mike Rowe?

Not sure I want to be on TV for anything. But to trust someone else to use my image that can be manipulated takes a heap of trust. I am not for sale. Some people in this world want to be accepted. I just want to be left alone by the people who disagree and not accepted.

thats funny, ive always thought if anyone would be good to us, it would be mike rowe. ive seen him with some sho nuff hillbillys and even though he picks on them he never seems to be condecending to me.

Im telling ya for shure i would like to see hog doggin on the outdoor channels but as soon as it goes prime time we'll have ten times the dog jockies. well bred dogs are already scarce and when all the animal planet lovin, liberal panty waste toy dog breeders see how pretty our curs are theyll take over and the cur world will be completly totaled just like wiemeraners and labs

i like what Dub said about dont accept me, just leave me alone.

I'm kinda on the fence about the whole deal.

On one side you have people saying, keep a low profile, it's too much for main stream... it's already main stream. Look at the internet for one. We've had over 1 million page views per month on this site alone in the past several months... yes I said MILLION. It's not all by hog hunters either. Look at all the hunting shows in the past few years. I've seen more different hunting shows with dog hunts than ever before... you used to never see that. Look at all the History Channel, Discovery Channel and National Geographic Channel shows that have came out recently... a lot of those included dog hunting clips also. The elusive "wild boar" is already in the American main stream and getting more popular by the day.

I'm sure this show will be made for tv... it may be a bunch Hollywood actors pretending to be hog hunters, who knows? But, I would like to see well respected and experienced hunters have a part in it. Whether it be on the show or behind the scenes to help consult. It may not do a dang bit of good, but at least we can share what we do in a positive light. That's why I put this out here for everyone to see. At least send them an e-mail expressing your concerns.

Raider,
I know three different well spoken, educated women that have their own dogs, can and do hold their own in the woods, and will do things that most grown men are afraid to do. With regards to the show, if any of these women I know were to sign up, it darn sure wouldn't be a joke...

Take it for what it is. The good, the bad and the ugly, Gentlemen.

It certainly has the potential to hurt if done poorly. But, if it is done well it could be beneficial. And the correct participation could balance the Hollywood sensation to at least a neutral status. Remember, this is going to happen weather ambassadors or the sport participate or not. I think we would be in better shape with quality representation.

If any of y'all decide to participate, contracts, contracts, contracts!

Steve

I don't think it's as bad an idea as some think. What WILL hurt is having someone on the show that hunts with a truckload of dogs and has to throw several catch dogs in each bay and tear the hog all up and get a dog cut. That's exactly what they're wanting. The person that does it needs to have a couple of good bay dogs at most. Go in there and get some video of a big sounder. Show the dogs playing with kids and not on chains or in boxes. Basicly make it look like nothing could possibly go wrong. They'll either decide not to air it cause its not quite what they wanted or people will get a good view of the sport. But I'm telling you and I don't care who disagrees with me, the worst thing that could happen is have some young guys get on there and try to show how tough they and their dogs are. Btw, I consider myself a young guy in my early twenties so I'm not trying to say we're not good at it. Just need to think about what others see. If you have even 5 seconds of the wrong type of video, it's going to be played over and over and over.

Shut yo mouth...boy.

These are two different people and two different channels. The people I was originally dealing with decided they wanted to work out in Florida.

We were contacted by both companies and each have different ideas but both are more concerned on the characters, drama and entertainment rather than the actual dogs and hunting.

Like Steve said.....If and who does this I would hope would be good ambassador of the sport. The producers are not concerned about how the sport is percieved....more how crazy, dramatic and entertaining the series can be for television.

i see more negativity than positivity out of it   remember that rural people and their beliefs and way of doin things are the minority these days   "city people" will see the dogs on hogs and say thats animal cruelty or worse and want another alternative to the situation   i can see them wanting state or government control on hogs and not country people with their dogs havin a good time hunting recreationally   put ureselves in the shoes of peolpe that dont hunt or farm or even know anything about country life   the government can finance chopper hunts and huge trapping systems and ive even heard of people sayin  well why dont they invent a didease and inject it into hogs and turn them loose so they can infect other hogs   theres a million ways to deal with the hog prob  i say we stay out of the light as much as possible and when we r shown in the public eye make it the best most respectable showing possible for hogdoggers   jmo

Raider,

When I said three women, I wasn't talking about the HDL girls, one of them yes, not all of them.   Krystal Rohan, Crystal Ward, and Mandi Williams are the three women that I know personally that hunt with their own dogs. Not because they are tagging along with their boyfriend or husband, they hunt because they are hog doggers plain and simple.

I agree with this statement, and I am torn like many others here. On one hand, I don't think the general public is ready for hog dogging with bulldogs hanging off the ears. I would hate to see a series that puts hog doggers in a negative light too. But I don't see where a bay and shoot is any different than any other hunting show. And I don't think the production company, or any network that might be interested in a show, is looking for something that the general public is not ready for either.

That is about all I needed to hear, everyone of these I have either been envolved in or known the people envolved it did not turn out well.  And it wont as long as they are looking fo sensationalism and not the sport.

I posted earlier, and my general thought was it was not a good idea.  However, also posted that I would not judge anyone who decided to participate.  My reasoning for that is I feel anyone in this group can make an educated, rational decision once they have all the details worked out.  What I mean is, if whoever participates has the FINAL say on editing and what footage and comments actually make it to the television, then there should be no problem.  Like I said earlier, it is my understanding simply from the posts that the people approaching hunters are not from programs with a hunting theme.  I am afraid they are looking to make a mockery of us all, and instead of the show being like Buckmasters, it will be more like Southern Fried Home Videos!
On KENS 5 (San Antonio CBS Channel) they had a segment on hogs tearing up neighborhoods, and interviewed a trapper who was working the area for the landowners.  They showed part of his statement that included him stating "one sow can be responsible for over 800 hogs a year".  Now I really do not think this man was saying that one sow would birth 800 hogs a year, but that is exactly what it sounded like when they only showed part of the interview.  I think he probably was talking ealier in the interview about how if one sow has say 15 to 20 pigs in a year, then they and their offspring could increase a population to 800.  However, that is not what made it to TV!

We have girls that hunt with us to and in many cases they are more eficient and trustworthy than alot of the guys that come hunt with me, that being said, I think this is going to be geared more toward intertainment, especially if they are looking for women that are willing to try hog doggin. I think it could be great for the right team but could end up being a joke if true hog doggers are not running it.

My 2 cents!
Bad idea, no matter who they use, professional or not. Environmentalist/tree-huggers/PETA etc... will be all over this.

Here is a link I stumbled across the other day. http://www.topix.com/forum/state/al/TH170C1K5URSHF72N       A forum topic about hog-dogging that has been replied to for over 4 YEARS.  Back and forth from doggers to tree-huggers, an argument of one clip shown on the news. What do you think a series would stir-up???

I had people at work the other day mention calling the SPCA, "or whatever they are called", on me for having MY dogs in the back of the truck during work hours cus I was going hunting after work. Hell, they had a blanket to lay on and water to drink. I can only imagine what these folks may say if they saw the hunt.

People, i'm afraid it's too late to "lay low" any more. Matt and I were contacted by another production agency yesterday. It's seems as if the "wild boar" is the new fad in America...  all the big networks are interested in filming some sort a show about them. In the past several months we've been contacted by these two production agencies, two hunting shows, the Animal Planet... and the BBC ???.

The shows are going to happen whether we approve or not, what we all need to do help steer them in the right direction so a bad light is not shed on hog hunting with dogs.

EXACTLY!

Your right Mike, it's gonna happen no matter what we think.
I just hope they don't wind up with some inbred, fence climbin, no dog feeding outlaw.

count me out  i catch hogs cuz its fun and the dogs love it and i hate them   not for the world to sit back and watch on tv and form opinions of their own without actually doin it themselves  any footage taken of our hunts is for us and other hogdoggers   i love the thrill and i love to see my kids doin somethin other than drugs and alcohol  this is something for us by us and i dont think think some city slicker needs to know about it  we all know its dangerous to dogs and to humans  i see an rip post almost everyday  thats sumthin peta an vegetarians will have a field day with  if they only knew that the hogs were eatin their veggies!  i hope whoever does it is a respectable hunter   i dont want to see another pig bomb type of hunter on tv   he was embarrassing   i do understand thats its comin to mainstream whether we or i like it or not but i think there will b more negativity than positivity   as for women hunters my wife run with any man any time in the woods and smile the whole time

Well the worst thing we ever done was sign in a contract with any production company! The tv networks went nuts on all the stuff the girls were going to do and loved it! But the production company was piece of junks and thought they new more about hog hunting than we did and only been around it for about a month!

All the dog footage they used to get to the tv networks was ours that we filmed! They were crazy people who knew alot about the concrete jungle but nothing about woods!

If any of you guy's decide you want to do this call me and I will hook you up with an entertainment lawyer or two! Trust me you need to talk to one before you sign a contract we talked to the lawyer after the first contract but before the main contract think god! Right now we are unable to do anything until dec. 23!! That is why all these production companies are jumping through hoops trying to get things done!!
We don't care though as the reality tv is a joke and that is way far than what we would want to do! Check the history on reality stars and what they are doing after the shows are done and if they want to do anything who owns them! ;)

Well my vote would have been Jessee, but his hogs are only 100 lbs but they do have the teeth of a 700 pounder...... ;D
