Silent is my preference but to each his own. Just seems like that open mouth would keep the hog out in front of the dogs. Around my way there is a lot of very thick cut downs that end up being 20 or 30 acres of briar hell. A dog don't have a chance of just flat footed running a hog down. So I think stealth mode is the best. Sneak up on em bay em bite em in the nuts if he tries to run. This works well for us.

its wat ever you like or works for you. i hunt bmc off my hood and all my dogs will catch . if you hunt some of my small places and the dogs bark in box the hogs are already on the move. hounds wouldnt work but if you have alot of land hounds would work cause my friends hunt in the panhandles and use hounds and my buddys like to hear a race. i preffer not to hear dogs barking on track, i like catching hogs and not running them to far thats y i hunt this type of bmc that came from j w hart, and cody hart the pbr bull riders. they catch cows with there bmc , but you just need to find a hog hunter that has dogs that you like and that he raises and buy or get some from him. im having a litter in january. # 940 210 1762 you can come hunt with these dogs and see if you would wont some. but every body catches hog and in all different ways and styles. you just half to figure yur style, good luck

X2... I have to admit, it is hard to find a good cold nose cur dog. Like you said, the good ones are not for sale...

I believe that a hog knows when a dog is on his trail whether or not its a silent or open dog, all this silent vs. open dog stuff IMO is a bunch of BS. Its all about preference, I love hounds, grew up with them all my life and will run all dogs silent or open as long as they will hunt.

An open dog with brains, good nose, ability to drive a track and runs to catch and not just trail, will not run a hog any further than a cur of equal ability. I hunt curs but hunt with hounds on a regular basis and can't see any difference in the length of the races. A smart hog that is going to run, will run the same if the dogs are silent are whistle dixie, it dosen't make any difference around here. I can promise you this, what I call a good one, is just as hard to find in either style of dog.

I love hounds and love to hear a good race BUT! if you bring a pack of hounds to the hogs we hunt you may never catch a hog! If we have a dog open in the box when we pull up it will more than likely ruin the hunt. These hogs here run and run hard, open mouthed dogs just rarely ever catch up to them. A hog can definately outrun a dog. If that hog thinks a dog is after him he will go to the next county. There are exceptions but I believe this to be the rule.

There is no need to go to hounds for the atributes you are looking for, I hunt with some ETBMC with Bigo and Skoalbandit that I believe are just as cold nosed, long ranged, get it done dogs and will get it done quicker than a hound. Im not harping on hounds I hunt one but after hunting with these types of Curs for almost a year now I know what I want  ;D

Best dogs I have seen are jadg. They will bark on track. Hog dogs. Would put money on them over 99.5% of the dogs out there to find and bay hogs.

I'm sure the hogs in Plano are much faster and wilder than they are in Henderson county. We have them mostly surounded here, with the Pacific on the west, the Atlantic on the east and the Gulf to the south. We get outrun some, change sip codes some and catch some, but open or silent dosen't seem to altar the outcome.

Me and my hunting partner bred a cat male and plott gyp and came out with some fast starting , hard hunting , and silent dogs that all of the dogs that i kept up with out of that litter were finding hogs by a year old and one at around 8-9 months old .They hunt out like a hound and some have a good nose and some seem to have more of a cur nose but they are nice dogs , both the parents are dead so a repeat breeding is not an option . hopefully i can find a gyp that will breed good to one of our males because that is all we have left is all males . I know alot of people are breeding cur/plott dogs with good results .

Good Luck and hope you find the breed that will work for you

The good ones will catch a hog, silent, open, playing a set of bagpipes. You take em to Alpine,Abilene,Weatherford,Plano,Texarkana. They are gonna put a hog at the end of the race. When I hear folks say "a open dog cant catch a hog where I hunt".Tells me he's got alot more country to cover, before I ever take what he says seriously. :o

We dont have any hogs here in plano, I hear the sarcasm tho. I did say I believed there were exceptions. You guys probably have REAL GOOD DOGS! ;)

a dog that opens on a hot track and moves it fast will catch a lot of hogs if it has the grit to stop it. I'm not talking about a dog that babbles on a cold track for an hr before he warms it up. Stay away from that type of hound.

You just keep on giving Bulldogs a new name. :o

Im not sure what you are all twisted up about but I thought they were policing the sarcastic comments, I guess some would rather start trouble than get along. You know if I would have known a differing oppinion than yours would upset you so much I would have kept mine to myself as not to hurt your feelings. Please forgive me. Humbly

Oh I take your responce to mean you decline the invitation to come show me how to catch a hog  ;D
