Title: biggest catahoula
Post by: Peachcreek on January 17, 2011, 10:08:56 pm
what is the biggest pure bred catahoula you guys and gals have seen? i had a really good young man come to the house the other day with a 5 month old registered cat male pup that was dang near the size of my zeke dog. zeke is 80lbs now, this pup was pushing 60-65lbs already. the young man said he bought these two pups from over around tomball. He said the parents were 165lbs. the guy he bought the dogs from told him they had alot of the mastiff blood in them. I was just curious if you all had ever seen any that big before?

The guy down the road from us has a huge beautiful catahoula that he uses to work his cows and he is the size of a freakin great dane. I got a breedin from him one time. The pups were all huge and pretty and would bay their behinds off in a bay pen but when you went to the woods, they wouldnt leave your feet. We still have a dog that came out of that litter and we use him as a guard dog. He is pretty aggresive. A month ago when i was robbed, he was on a chain because I had a female in heat.   :(

This is the dog that we kept out of that litter and he probably weighs around 80 lbs and he is no where near as big as his dad.

Tommy Strange used to have a giant catahoula about 10-12 years ago. Thomas Rohan probably knows the details on the dog, I just remember him being the biggest cat I had ever seen.

Biggest one I ever owned was a 85# gyp in hard hunting shape but she was as rough as a bulldog. I will post you a pic later tonight or tomorrow.

i'm confused, (which aint unusual...) we've had cat/leopard dogs for 30-40 years, but very few registered ones. are you allowed to register mastiff crosses? or is he talking about the ancestors of the origional catahoulas?

i took it to mean the original catahoulas... I guess it all depends on what catahoula definition ya read but from what i have read they came from war dogs "mastiff and greyhound x red wolf" I didnt get into questioning to much....

that's my understanding of their ancestry too, but i dont know if i'm buying his story about the dog "having more mastiff blood". kinda like if somebody had a registered one with a flag tail and they said "this line carries more of the red wolf blood"  seems like a long way back to be showing up now. i'm sure you could breed that size back into them by just crossing big to big, but even then could you say it came from the origional mastiff blood, or just recent selective breeding? and i think there has been many more generations of undocumented crosses with who knows what to say what blood EXACTLY, that any one dog has. it's my understanding that these dogs have a few hundred years of breeding and only about 60 years of registry/records

Tommy Strange dog "Slim" was big, and he came from Cut-N-Shoot Catahoulas or thats what his papers had on them anyway.

suposidly the guy has had this line for some time and apparently hunts them or used to. heck it might be the guy from cut and shoot? I know my dog zekes mom was 100lbs and looked good,  so i guess if someone was breeding for size it would be doable like rockinw said.... is doable a werd? i looked at the papers and didnt recognize any of the lines. but i dont know every good line.... it will be interesting to see how my pup does with these dogs. i do feel if they grow to 160lbs they will have a heck of a time keeping up with the dog he got from me for any length of time.

Chad, isn't Concho by a Stud named "StoneThrows Colby G" that belongs to Ms. Janie Pate? and Mark T. female named Tx mason Chilli Pepper? If that info is correct he is bred similiar bloodlines to Our two young females we are satrting to run right now. They are not large but got alot of hunt to them also that I am understanding alot of it is influenced from "G" dog.

Concho is a monster of a dog!

Chad,
Bryant/underdog sold Kitty Cat to Mark T several years back. He hunted her for some time, then gave her to Mandi and I. When we decided to get away from the rough dogs, we contacted Mark to see if he wanted her back. At the time he didn't have room for another dog,.and asked us.to make sure.she went to a good home. By chance Mandi and Bryant met and found out that Bryant was the original owner of.Kitty Cat. She went back to live her life out with bryant.

I don't know if she and Concho were related, but I do know they are both built like brick outhouses. The pics bryant posted don't do her justice.

we dont have reg. dogs but we do have large cats. We bred a freind of our dog(his name was mighty joe) to a gyp we had and got some good size dogs out of them....big heads, big chest, big hips....they are built like a mastiff, just not as large as a english mastiff. they are however a lil slower than my other cats (out of similar bloodlines)that are a little more long and lean. she isnt as big as that concho dog but she is a good size for a gyp(about 70+lbs). she can ripe a nut sack out on a boar hog pretty easy:) mrs.kbar

I've seen alot of dogs around 90-100lbs that were "called" catahoulas and maybe they were I don't know..
The biggest one I know for sure about is a dog my buddy owns named Jr..  He's about 80 lbs fat..  About 68-70lbs in running shape..

Chopper on the right. Hes the biggest catahoula ive ever had or see! I keep him in shape and weighs about 95 pounds. Hes not the tallest ive had but sure is big. damn head on him looks like a good size pit. Kris at Windridge does have some big cats. My hunting partner got a gyp thats 30 inches tall and weighs 70 pounds but super in shape.

this thread being reposted has got me wondering what happened to the guy I started this about. He used to get on ethd but for the life of me I cant remember his screen name or real name. He hunted out of waller and his dad made me a real nice leather collar. I remember one of his pups was a deep red dog.

Thomas male related to C.Whites dog topped out at 72-74 lb.  his Uncle I work/hunt for the owner is a black/tan saddle back as tall as Tommy Stranges old Slim and Beaus dogs gos about 80lbs not bulk but long and lanky gos by the name "G2", Yall could appreciate the size and beauty of this dog but sure slow to mature.

Its not always the weight . Moto- 72 lb dog is not all that tall, hes not too bulky IMO either, hes actually really agile in the woods for a dog his size.
But G2 -80lb is not that much heavier but alot bigger when you put them side by side length and height.

Some good looking dogs yall posted up for sure

Those are all beautiful looking dogs, ive always been a fan of ol' concho since the first day i saw him,i think i was with justin bulloch i cant remember. My question is this, how long will it take before some internet hoghunter gets on the keyboard and says they are not catahoulas because they are so big, surely they have some great dane or bulldog mixed in there haha,After all, mine are mastiffs!! >:D
