Title: Re: recomendations on good knife?? Post by: Circle C on January 20, 2011, 02:38:04 pm Spencer,
I've got that same knife, but never used it on hogs. Always wondered how well it would work. I carry a Buck 119 in the woods. Decent knife, but my feelings are not hurt if I loose one. A friend lost a Randall made knife on a hog hunt... I don't think I would have left the place until it was located... as far as I know, it's still lost too. http://www.randallknives.com/ Title: Re: recomendations on good knife?? I also prefer cheap. While I don't wont to lose one at least lose a cheap one.

Title: Re: recomendations on good knife?? Post by: Barnman on January 21, 2011, 05:42:38 pm I also use that same Gerber knife. It is not to big and not to small. Also with the double edge it seems to do lots of damage with little effort. I looked at lots of knives and this one I belive was the best fit for me for the money.
Title: Re: recomendations on good knife?? Post by: Purebreedcolt on January 21, 2011, 08:39:47 pm One u build ur self. It really is not hard and with nothing more than a drill and grinder u can make a vary serviceable knife. Here is a basic how to. Go to a flee mkt find a big file 10 to 12 inches take home and when u cook out throw it in there and forget about it till the next day or when ever u feel like it then go dig it out of the ashes it will be somewhat softer than when u stuck it in there. Cut the point off that goes in a handle. Draw the basic shape u want the knife to be but a hair larger. Grind it down to the shape. Make sure the handle is right for ur hand. Now u can eather make a finger guard out of allumimun or something or u can do what I do most often is weld the point back on at the end of where the handle is. Make sure u make each piece in a v before welding so when u grind it flat the weld will still hold. Get a good drill bit and drill two small holes for the handle. Lots of times I use screws for the handle they hold a little better so make them just sightly larger than the screw. Now grind the blade to somewhat of a sharpen state. Make sure u slope both sides and as close to even as u can. now u need a sanding disk that goes on a drill think they even have them at walmart u will want course med and fine grit disks. Now get both side of the blade somewhat clean and looking smooth usually use med or fine for this and knock off the file lines on the handle but not to the extent of gouging the metal otherwise u will have gaps when u put the handle on. Now u need a HOT fire I usually use a air matress blower to get it even hotter. Get the knife red hot take it out and dunk it in some used motor oil or some real dry sand just something so it does not cool tooooo fast once it is cool again get it red hot this time drop it into water and any time u handle it with plires or what ever make sure u are grabing the handle not the blade u want it tempered well or u will have a weak spot in the blade. Now u are ready for the handle u need a flat piece of wood or anything that is flat that u want the handle out of. Use two ton epoxy or the like and glue ONE side on once it is set drill ur holesin the one side then glue the other side and drill those holes from the side u allready drilled. Put in the screws with a little epoxy in the holes and then cut off screws do this slowly so they don't get too hot and burn the handle material. Shape the handle slowly then use fine sand paper to finish out the handle. On the blade u can use real fine sand paper or pollish it and basiclly u have u a pig sticker. Sorry not going into the sheath that is not so easy for me to explain
Title: Re: recomendations on good knife?? Post by: Purebreedcolt on January 21, 2011, 08:44:14 pm Shoot forgot one thing after u have dropped it into water u have to stick the oven on about 350 to 370 till the metal is a slight blue color. U may have to sand off a spot to see the metal b4 putting it in the oven. When u know it is ready is when u can cut into it with another file but not to easly. In my convection oven it takes about an hour give or take on the knife
Title: Re: recomendations on good knife?? Post by: Noah on January 21, 2011, 11:19:10 pm Personally, I carry a K-bar... good weight and backbone... and easy to sharpen in the field... can chop a spine in half and still shave my head afterwards.... very nice for someone that sucks at sharpening!! ;D
Can't deny the 119 Buck though... sharp SOB for the money... not good for chopping however... I always carry either a folding Boker or Bob Lund for a pocket knife... EXTEMELY SHARP knives, but damn near impossible to shapen yourself... send back to the factory for sharpening "type of knives" Hands down, however, the baddest knife I've ever had the priveledge to hold was a "GrayMan Knife". Special forces friend of mine has one and it is simply a fine blade. Heavy(probably a 1/4" thick tip to tang), balanced, and excellent metal... VERY SHARP... but again... hard to sharpen. Here's the link to the maker, http://graymanknives.com/... I recommend the unserrated "pounder". This will be the next knife I buy... but probably an inch or two longer than shown |
