Title: Dog won't gain weight
Post by: TCB-Vince on January 28, 2011, 08:38:07 pm
Ok my male Catahoula the last few months started loosing weight. He gets worm and all just like all my other dogs. So i up his feeding to see if he would gain some weight. No luck. So I went ahead and toke him to the vet and had them do a spoon test and blood work done. Came back everything was prefect! So now I'm stuck. The vet told me to bring him back in for more money and she told me it's something to do with his stomach or intestines. She told me he's not taking the nutrients out of the food just going eight through him.  He acts completely normal as he did and show no sign of hurting or not eating or throwing up. They all get good kibble food and raw meat treats.

Any ideas or suggests???

Thanks guys
Vince

You might try feeding him boiled rice with his dog food or bread.

I started using it after I read about not to long ago and I was surprised at how well it actually worked.  I had a new dog in less than a week and a half, stuff works wonders for me.

It has worked wonders on my wife's dog. Calf milk replacer works well to I used it on my momma dog when she had 12 pups. They never sucked her down. Good luck

I put a spoon full of peanut butter  in each time i feed to put weight on a dog that just can't seem to gain an ounce ... but if your dog has digestive problems, and he is a good dog, I would stay on top of it with my vet , because if his system is not retracting the vitamins from his food ,,, that is a hog of a hole other color. good luck with your dog, hope he turns out ok....

Thanks everyone for ideas I'll have to give some of these a try. I read up on the coconut oil. They say it's really good for dogs.

Also I'm looking for an new vet cause one they charge me a way to  much and they give me answer like well maybe it this but dunno. Not answer I want to hear. I want to hear "you should try this or let's try this" not dunno you can.  Also they told me I should first try getting him fix to and that threw me over after that.

I'm gonna try some of these ideas and go from there.

The next time you hear anyone talk about getting a dog "fixed" ask them politely, "what do you think is broken? "
I don't mind animals being neutered, but I HATE that term fixed!!

Also a big thumbs up for coconut oil

There is a formula that tells how much food calories to increase for every ten degree drop in temperature during the cold months. If the dog is short coated it will probably need even more food. If the dog does not have the fine under coat it will make it worse. Give the dog extra food and about a tablespoon of used cooking oil or bacon grease.

Some dogs are naturally lean.

This is something I had thought because his coat is short unlike the other ones. Also this male is all legs. Not that wide but taller then the rest. Got a big stride on him. I feel he takes more of the greyhound in him.

A teaspoon or tablespoon of any kind of oil probably wont be enough to keep the weight on with this cold.

If the dog does not have a medical problem then just increase the feed to the dog and put at least 1 or 2 tablespoons of some type of  cooking grease or oil in there feed and instead of feeding once a day break it up into two feedings a day. Making a warm bed for the dog will help in keeping the weight on during the cold winter months.

I have found that some dogs are just naturally leaner than other dogs. They must have a higher metabolism.

I have owned several bird dogs in years past that just stayed thin no matter how much you fed them.

My red cur male is one of those dogs that are thin. I feed him more than another dog that probably has him 20 lbs..

Still wouldnt gain i started feeding Victor dog food and poof the dog has been on it 30 days hes fatter than any dog in my kennels. 2 1/2 cups he weighs 50 pounds. never weighed over 35 until now. Another thing is vitamins B-100 complex never used myself seen some guys use it and it worked. Just my thought

Ladyofdwk u might need to confine ur lacy to a smaller kennel to keep her from running all day. We had to do that to my wifes dog she is putting on weight now finally
