Title: LionandBoarHunter's East Texas Adventure...
Post by: Mike on January 31, 2011, 07:09:24 pm
After the Wounded Warrior Hunt on Saturday, Jesse Paul came to the house for a couple of days of hunting the pineywoods. We started out on Sunday in Huntsville where we caught a nice boar shortly into the hunt. We hunted towards the back of the place and the bottom fell out on us several miles from camp. Got back to the trucks and called it a day because of the weather.

This morning, UNDERDOG joined us on a hunt to catch some of these "easy" city hogs. We roaded the dogs for several miles with no luck. Got back by the lake and decided to cast them into a block of woods. Mine, Bryant's and three of Jesse's young dogs went left and his Jet dog went right. A little while later, Jet struck and the race was on... shortly went off the Garmin's radar. All the other dogs cast a mile deep, so we waited a while to get them all back in. Jesse was a nervous wreck the whole time cause we were so close to civilization. ;D Got the dogs back and spent the next couple of hours tracking to Jet, to determine how close we could get to him... the old tv antenna came in handy today. ;) Finally figured out he was pretty much over a mile from any where we could get to him in the trucks, we unoaded the 4 wheelers and headed out... that was another adventure in itself. :o Jesse took Paint and Striker to send to him to put some heat on this hog cause he kept baying and breaking. Finally got within 500 yards, had a bay for a minute and sent the other two dogs. The hog circled back and headed towards where he came from... off the radar again. We went that direction and finally picked them up a couple of miles back towards the lake. Got about 600 yards out and had a steady, slow moving bay. We slipped in to a 100 yards, saw the hog and sent Tink and Shiner on their way. Got him caught and killed... 5 hours after he jumped. Them dog's of Jesse's made a helluva showing today... we sure had a good time. It got hot and Jesse had a long drive ahead of him, so we called it a day.

Fellas, 5 hours spent putting an end to a bad runner like that is as good as catching a half dozen within an hour in my book! A hog like that will let you know what kind of dogs you have thats for sure!!!

Good hogs too! Im amazed that JP would even get that close to a big city. Poor fella probably needs to be on meds now! lol

Not that you don't already know but sure does feel good to see the dogs finish something like that. I'm willing to bet there are only a handful of dogs like that. Good post and good pictures.

x3, These type of dogs will make you worry every time you turn them loose, especially around civilization areas.

Yes sir. There wasn't a whole lot of sign on the place... it looks like they're all down rooting up the pastures at the prison. :o

He's such a nice pale faced dog. I have to make sure he gets ample woods time and doesn't get shadowed by that superstar. They are all really nice pups but they all look alike so I naturally gravitate to the one that looks different - hence the pale face being my favorite. Glad to see you are giving him good woods time  ;)

Cheers

Some of the best dogs I have owned were reddish yellow with the pale face some folks called them frosty mouthed. Matter of fact I named one Pale Face.

I like these gritty dogs that will take a track and put a hog on the end of it even if it take half a day. 8) ;)

Lionandboarhunter's dogs are some proprietary blend he cooks up. They are yellow dogs with lots of ear, but the pale faced one is a throwback to one of the original ingredients. They are fun to hunt behind, real busy, and as you can tell "quit" is not a word they know.

I call his dog "pale faced dog" because I can't ever seem to recall his name. Was your pale faced dog all cur or was it a blend of several breeds?

Cheers
M

Around 1990 I crossed a taylor bred BMC to a mtn cur and then only bred to mtn curs after that. This type of mtn curs had the frosty mouth that showed  up on a regular basis when I bred them these mtn curs had good size and plenty of ear. No quit and lots of hunt and grit. I used the BMC to make sure I kept the size and to quiet them on track some.

I also kept a pure line of mtn curs which were of the Texas Smoke breeding and a mixture of the Kemmer mtn cur.

Texas Smoke is of the same breeding as the Kemmers but somewhat larger and they seemed to be faster and harder hunting dogs. Both had lots of go and grit but I liked the Texas Smoke better.

The first mtn curs I got that I crossed over to the BMC (1 breeding) were 9 months old or so and these pups ran a hog about 5 hrs. in a thick cut over and I had to leave them over night. They ran about 2 or 3 hrs on the first drop so they ran about 8 hrs that day.

I knew I had found the right dogs after that hunt. All that running and only caught one but I was looking at the big picture. :)

I know lots of hunters who do not like these type of dogs but these are my favorite. Along the coast where the hunting land is shrinking these type of dogs will not be the type to have.

My friend runs these long range dogs with 2 dogs that are a cross between mtn cur and pitbull. He will not run these long range dogs by themselves if he can help it.

I think he might of had some field trial walker and it was the perfect blend.

I have an eye on another mtn cur that some say he has plott in him. It could be because he is winning the big hunts?? ??? ;)

Most good dogs have some type of high powered hound that got slipped in behind the wood shed. :o ;D

you know the field trial game. If they are talking bad about someone it usually means that that person has the best dogs.

I did get one walker colored pup at the beginning though. ;D Must of been a throuh back fromway back. ;)

Getting back to Lion and Boar hunter. I sure would like to own a few of his pups...If they turn out like they should I would take real good care of them :)

I am just curious as to how hard it is too keep up with the dogs there, are there many roads in there to try to stay in hearing of them or do hogs just turn on jets and blast out of the coutry???  Can you guys ride horses or use utv in there or have to go on foot>>  Nice hog and good work on those dogs staying hooked on that hog, i sure be pround.....

There's one block of woods there that is several square miles. It's real easy for the dogs to get out of hearing range... most of the hogs out there like to turn on the afterburners and get gone. There's a few pipelines that cut through it, but real swampy... it's tough getting a 4 wheeler down them most of the time. We just drive as close as possible and go in after them.

I can bring horses out there and have had several friends hunt off horseback a few times out there... but the only horse I ride is named Honda. ;D
