Does anyone still use dog horns to call their dogs in?

old boy at the flea market told me everyone does, but he was also trying to sell me a horn O0

I'm making one out of an auddad horn going to try it anyways

How are you gonna make the mouthpiece ie. wood, horn...?

I'm going to try deer antler first just started it yesterday and it got cold now so be a few days till I work on it again.  Never made one but always wanted to try so figured no time like the present lol.  Know there are a couple that have made them on here with good results judging by the posts

No it is to cold out in the shop u need to get glasses think that extra reserves are getting to u

what the heck is a dog horn?  i gather its a horn to call dogs. anyone have a picture of one?  how do you get the dogs used to coming to it?

I have a loud yell when I want to every now and then when feeding I will yell and tell the dog I'm near to come hear has seemed to work figure it would work the same with the horn

ok so its kinda like a whistle only louder?  I just holler for the dogs and they come in, of course mine arent real long ranged mutts, maybe a few hundred yards or so.. but seeing as how i walk hunt it works for me.. i like the concept though..  can anyone post on how to make one.  what do you use to make the sound, i guess for the mouth piece?

Never used them on my hog dogs but they worked great on my beagles,you would be surprised at how far off you can hear a well made horn.

A truck horn works pretty good too.

The old fox hunters in this neck of the woods used to use them to call their fox dogs. It toots kinda like a small trumpet.....I have one somewhere around here. It was always called a fox horn when I was a kid. My Granddad had fox hounds when I was a kid and I used to go with him to listen to them run....I loved it and learned a lot of what I know about dogs running game from those hunts with him.

There is a guy in the classifieds in the Foxhound magazine still making them, you can send in a picture of your choice and he will carve it and tune the horn for you, google Hunters Horn Magazine and look in the claiifeds, i am thinking he is in Lousiana, I had one if was lound and easy to blow and had dogs running a bobcat carved on it like $50, somebody stole if off my dash alas..

Old family friend and retired Game Warden in these parts use to run Greyhounds in the cedar breaks always called his rabbit dogs back with one. Sounded cool to me as a young 'un, he gave it to me when I was about 10 or so. Ain't no telling what I done with it.

I have made a few. I cheated on the mouthpieces. I used the mouth piece of old wooden duck calls. A little glue, whittling, and sanding mad it perfect.
I also fitted a brass mouthpiece from an old tuba band horn to one. Man that thing could be heard from the next county over and it looked fancy! I gave it to my cousin and he lost it one day running his beagles

I have been wanting to make some more for friends but finding a decent horns is a challenge!

I was thinking about one for my dogs just a couple of weeks ago. The old man that worked for us while I was growing up was a coon hunter and he had one made of a goat horn that was really sweet sounding.

I yell a loud HUuuup when I call my dogs and a horn would be an easy transition I believe.

i been wanting one for my coonhounds too ,

I can't imagine turning my dogs loose without my horn hanging around my neck; but then again I am stuck in the 50's!!

Man I cant find it and I want to get one made. Any help on finding someone who can make one with carving in it. Thanks

imo the goat horns always sounded the best. A little harder to blow though

Funny thing is when you want one they are hard to find, Then when you get one you see em everywhere.
