EAST TEXAS HOG DOGGERS FORUM

 A friend of our told us to be careful and check the meat of any hogs we butcher because they butchered a feral hog the other day and had to throw it away because it was full of worms. It had worms in the muscles. Has anyone else had this happen or ever heard of it.  ???

Yeah I am glad I have allready eaten I'm not squemish but that is just nasty sounding

I think I've seen it a few times but if anybody has pictures of intramuscular bots or worms I think it could be very educational

i have seen them on deer. i guess its the same thang. kinda looks like a thin grub worm? i think it is just bot fly larva like i have seen on horses? i thought it added some good flavor

I dont think they are bot fly larvae, they are teenie tiny white worms...I know exactly what she is talking about - unless they are the extremely early stages of a bot???  they are about the size of a sewing needle.  I dont really know what they are, but I seen it once when cleaning a hog we killed, I though ohhhh my theres that little worm that causes trichinosis....I boiled the heck out of the meat and fed it all to the dogs.

They fry up real nice with eggs!  ;D

I have seen worms in the flesh of rabbits and fish but not in a hog yet. I would sure like to know more about it though.

We have been seeing it a lot lately here in Limestone county. i asked my vet and he told me 2 jsut cut that section of meat out. but im not real sure about all that

i have caught a hog before at my place and the dogs cut him up pretty bad and i just let him go anyways a few weeks later i caught the same pig and he was covered in the worms and had a horrible smell!

Those worms are called maggots and that smell was infection.

Same worm a Speckeled Trout carries at least thats what I was told by a biologist.She told me there was no telling how many I've never caught before.I laid off fish for a while but now I just pop that SOB in the pit or fryer and its damn good.I love some sushi,barbacoa,menudo and sure that sounds worse to some of yall.

Since they fry up so nice. Does the meat sell for a bit more because of the worm bonus? ;D

Stop bein a wuss woman!  :o And let me tell u somethin bout Mexicans.I've been sick and over at Moms.Well guess she is tired of me.No more soup and medicine,she cooked kidneys with salsa fresh tortillas and said eat this and I'll be damn if I dont feel better. ???

Do freeze the meat and cook it to correct temperature. Freezing kills worms too. Kinda like a worm popsicle. Yum Yum ;D

Freezing really does kill worms. Cooking kills germs and worms.

That's how I roll!Well my better half and baby girl are out of town and Moms on the same street so was time to be the baby again.Its over now the fever has broken.

Ok, that makes sense now. It's not like you left your wife to deal with the family and house while you were being sick at your mom's.

The worms in the muscle I have seen, also check in the fat they say they r worse in the fat. The bigger thing is that scares me eating hog isnt worms I can take safegaurd, but psuedo rabies cant be stopped. Some ppl know about it others don't. I had 3 dogs contract it back July of 2010 they all died the day they caught it. after seeing that and wat it did to my dogs, I will never eat wild hog again. Unless its blood tested psuedo negative.

 From everything that i have read about pseudo rabbies so far, it isn't contagious to humans.

And i dont think u could catch it eating a hog, more likely to be transmitted bloodborne, but like dj sez, never saw where it's contagious to people. But i imagine seeing your dogs die with it leaves a lasting impression.

Boy does it leave an impression I have never seen a crueler death in my life and I watched 3 of them die. 2 were put down 6 hours into the battle the 3rd we thought was goin to make it. At first we had absolutely no idea of what was wrong thinking it was poision, or them getting into the neighbors drug lab. furher testing otopseys and testing several chemicals someone said lets try this and it was psuedo. But because of it I had to deal with several people with way more knowledge than I have. Usda was here OSU's diagnostic labratory and a lab in Michigan not to mention several other departments. Everything they told me was to watch myself to make sure I dont catch it because it can be contracted by humans! It will cook out not a problem as long as u cook your meat done no worries. They did say however eating it isnt the only way to contract it, blood to blood contact can pass it just the same. Chances are 1 in a billion but it is possible they said. It's very rare that its passed out of species but it can happen.

Yea 2 of mine tore the side off their faces looked like an acid burn threw up respatory destress couldnt hardly walk the 3rd dog's whole body ceased up she couldnt move stiff as a concrete block couldnt breathe we were trying to pry her mouth open to get a tube n her to breathe couldnt open her mouth period her eyes were swollen shut and throwing up through her teeth and they all made the most horrid noises i have ever heard also a year ago i had 1 do the same thing u describe

Have a good friend that owns a meat market and he told me that all pork that is freshly killed has worms. He said pour sprite on it and watch them come out of the meat. Never tried it but he swears by it. Three years ago I had three dogs die from pseudo rabies and there isn't nothing you can do.  They will scratch themselves to death.

No there is nothing you can do at all once they got it its down hill in hours
