Title: catch dog training
Post by: hog bit on February 15, 2011, 09:11:38 pm
My buddy just gave me a year old pit gyp. She saw her first hog today. I had 2 ba dogs baying and turned her loose. She ran in and bayed about a foot from the boars snout. She got grabby on top of the snout but never "latched on."

I have never trained a catch dog. Where should I go from here?  Is it even worth dealing with the dog if she doesn't have the instinct to latch on right away.

The hog was not rough at all. Would a rougher hog with another pit hanging on the ear be a good idea?

I'd try her with another catchdog just to give her a chance. The other dogs baying threw her off a little and she probably wasnt sure if she should catch. But if she wont lock on with another catchdog I'd say cull her.JMO

if the hog hits her a few times i bet she will latch on, just if she starts catching where you dont want , pull her off an let her catch where you want like on the ear

I'd try her with the same hog just by herself. if still nothing get a hold of the hogs back legs and have her loose in the pen. if still nothing another catch dog. if still nothing I wouldn't keep her.
