Title: algebra homework Post by: Peachcreek on February 15, 2011, 09:16:01 pm my daughter just came and asked me to help her with her home work. she showed me a problem and my responce to her was if someone held a gun to my head and said do this problem or i will shoot you i would tell them just shoot me. ((3mn/2)exponent -1)exponent -4 simplify the equation do any of you know how to do this mess? >:(
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: TinyTexasCowgirl on February 15, 2011, 09:18:31 pm Is this the exact way that the problem is written on her paper?
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Peachcreek on February 15, 2011, 09:21:18 pm yes exept the exponent thang is just a little number in the upper right like -4 ???
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: BA-IV on February 15, 2011, 09:47:09 pm Yeah...I remember alil from high school at least enough to hopefully steer you the right way

Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on February 15, 2011, 10:06:14 pm I think the answer is 81 m^4 n^4/16 I will double check
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: BA-IV on February 15, 2011, 10:09:18 pm I'm pretty sure that's the answer Silverton, if not were both wrong and we needa get some lessons ;D
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: TColt on February 15, 2011, 10:10:52 pm I think the answer is 81 m^4 n^4/16 I will double check thats what I got Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on February 15, 2011, 10:12:16 pm thats it ;D, got another one?
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: TColt on February 15, 2011, 10:14:23 pm the ^-4 cancels out the ^-1, (two negatives equal a positive) so your left with (3mn/2)^4
3x3x3x3 =81 2x2x2x2 =16 m^4 n^4 it should look like 81m^4n^4 LINE 16 Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Peachcreek on February 15, 2011, 10:15:40 pm she said that was what she got too but she didnt know if she was doing right. OK now for the real question.... have any of you all ever NEEDED to know how to work a problem like this in life? i for one have not! >:D

Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Silverton Boar Dogs on February 15, 2011, 10:19:31 pm Its the building block for matrix calculus, and that can be a very useful tool for price prediction and other forcasting models. And its good brain exersise ;D
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: TColt on February 15, 2011, 10:24:18 pm I hate brain exercises! I would rather exercise my dogs!
But thats what all my highschool teachers told me, when I told them I will never use this, they would say "its for problem solving skills". To this day it has yet to help me solve any problems haha Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: dub on February 15, 2011, 10:28:51 pm OK did I miss something? Where is the = in the equation?
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Peachcreek on February 15, 2011, 10:31:00 pm damb paul i thought you were just a simple cowpoke ;D just joking! some of you guys amaze me.lol thanks for the help but i am lost for sure ;D

Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: dub on February 15, 2011, 10:41:36 pm ((3mn/2)exponent -1)exponent -4
[(3mn/2)^-1]^-4 simplifies to: 81 m^4 n^4 / 16 Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Diamond G on February 15, 2011, 10:57:11 pm Man, I feel sorry for my kids. They are screwed unless thier momma remembers this stuff. If I dont need it to calculate drug dosages or drip rates for EMS or to figure pump pressures while pumping the engine, I dont remember any of it. Its kinda sad cause I was pretty good at it when I set my mind to it.
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: dub on February 15, 2011, 11:27:15 pm Cowboy with an economics degree ;D Not economics it is algebra. Come on man. ;D It falls under distribution. The -1 exponent and the -4 exponent the negatives cancel out and the the exponent of 4 is distributed. 4^2=16 is the same as 2^2*2^2=16 is the same as 8^2/2^2=16 and so on the exponent can be distributed to the derivatives. Numbers are logical. Just do not use begs the question if you do not know what it means or I will go into an explanation of terms of logic. Just do not ask me to remember any names. ;DTitle: Re: algebra homework Post by: pigsr4etn on February 16, 2011, 12:36:10 am I dont get it. ??? ??? ???

That's what I got too, though it did take me a couple of minutes to figure out My biggest problem with math has always been coming up with the correct number, but not really knowing how I did it. ;D Teachers always got on to me for not showing my work.... Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: TColt on February 16, 2011, 10:15:16 am Heck no, Im still in school, this is my third year to put off college algebra but I have decided Im gonna sign for baseball before I have to take some crazy college math ;D Where are you signing at? I LAUGHED AND GOT SENT TO THE PRINCIPAL IN HS, IN COLLEGE I DIDNT LAUGH SO MUCH I LIKED MY PROFESSOR. IF I HAVE A PROBLEM IN LIFE THAT IS THAT DIFFICULT, ILL JUST SAY PISS ON IT HAHA. While I have not used that exact thing it is similar to logical reasoning. Learning how to process the information logically is how many people approach many problems without realizing it. I did not realize just how much it comes into play until I took Symbolic Logic. You take an argument turn it into symbols and apply rules similar to Algebra. Now that I have used many times. There is a reason people do not like to argue with me. I do not argue points I analyze their argument and prove the argument wrong. It is an outstanding problem solving tool and good way to approach many problems in life. Stop think about it as math and think about it as a way of thinking and how to solve a problem without knowing all the facts. I think Algebra helps more than math. I can get a calculator to tell me 2+2 but when you do not know what you are dealing with and life is full of variables it gives you a way to tackle many of life's problems. If not it will kill your GPA too ;D Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Peachcreek on February 16, 2011, 07:06:49 pm I got this in an email a few minutes ago, it's a fun little brain teaser. Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Purebreedcolt on February 16, 2011, 09:07:46 pm Here yall go. Kurt was 1 year old when the family dog Jake was born. When Kurt was 8, he was twice as old as his little sister Katie. Their second dog, Kirby, was born when Katie was 2 years old. Now Katie is 2/3 the age of Kurt, and Kirby is 3 times as old as their cat Hunter.
How old are the kids, dogs, and cat now? Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: Peachcreek on February 16, 2011, 09:20:20 pm duhh how is katie now 2/3 the age of kurt when she was half the age of kurt when he was 8? i need to stop reading this thread it makes my head hurt ;D

Enough math problems... who wants to do an English paper >:D (its against the banning of the Amerian Pit Bull Terrier ;D )
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: dub on February 16, 2011, 10:36:51 pm I can tell you the format you should use depending on who you are sending it to. Make sure you use an outline of the ideas you want communicated and divide them into subjects. I prefer to have one main point per letter with the main support subject that are factual. Then in the subjects I put the ideas I want communicated that go with the facts in a logical manner. The basic essay format is good. The intern can read the intro paragraph and know where it goes. There are some good techniques to persuade people's thoughts. I wrote a paper about Edgar Allen Poe and said that he was a comedian. His works were dark and morbid. But people read my paper and thought my silly interpretation of his work was correct. The point is to balance fact and opinion but also the opinions must be tied to fact. A well crafted letter should take time but it is very powerful.
Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: TColt on February 16, 2011, 10:48:05 pm Its just a paper for my english class at tech, it is a "literature review". Im planning on writin it kinda how you said, with just very little opinion. It basically suposed to be a review of the information available from peer reviewed sources (basically professional sources) to make the point you are trying to make. Lots of research and reading, I have a bagillion sources and around 200 pages I have printed off of research. I have been skimming through and highlighting for the past two days. Besides baseball and ETHD math problems, this paper is all I been doin this week haha!

Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: TColt on February 16, 2011, 11:04:26 pm the horrible part of algebra is you usually have to find several answers

Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: OKhoghunter on March 30, 2011, 09:21:45 pm well on the top where it says 2+3=10 5=10
7+3=63 9=63 its simply using the rules of algebra therfore the 3 doesnt exist its just a use of an equation so your just doing 5x2 or 7x9... simple. Title: Re: algebra homework Post by: hogdoggintn on March 30, 2011, 09:44:37 pm well on the top where it says 2+3=10 5=10 7+3=63 9=63 its simply using the rules of algebra therfore the 3 doesnt exist its just a use of an equation so your just doing 5x2 or 7x9... simple. 9+7=16 so 9x16=144 So the answer is 144 then ??? My love for math is definitely driven by a God given gift for it. Out of 300 math questions ranging from basic algebra to calculus on the College entrance exam (just a few years back :P ) i scored a perfect 300. They put me in honors calculus my freshman year and i aced the final lol. I guess i'm like Paul, hog hunter, horseman, outdoorsman with a love for mathmatics. I did good in other subjects too, but really would hate to help on that english paper Tcolt hahahaha
Here's a good one: Maver!ck + English Paper = ( :'( )^100 Maver!ck |
