Title: What to do ?
Post by: Oklahoma on February 16, 2011, 05:38:39 am
I lost a few dogs this month and now I'm down to pups that are not ready to go. Should I wait it out or try my luck with buying a couple. Have not heard many good things about buying older dogs any help is appreciated.

If your pups are young, take your time and start looking. A lot of good dogs can be bought if you do your homework. Many people get on hard times and are forced to sell stuff they don't want to sell. Find out why the dog is for sale. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Hunt with the dog and owner if possible. Get a trial for a specific time to hunt the dog . If the dog doesn't please you return it for your money back. If you can, find out from a third party if they know how the dog hunts. Not everyone with a dog for sale is a crook, but you have to be careful no matter what you buy. There are exactly 0 perfect dogs. You just have to figure out what you can live with. You're the one who will feed it.JMO

What's the best way to find out info from a third party without offending the seller.

X4.  As far as offending the seller i really wouldnt care.  If i were buying a dog from a friend they would know how i am and wouldnt be offended.  If i were buying it off a stranger and they did get offended i would simply ask them what they would do in my situation.  If they said buy the dog on your word, id look somehwere else.  JMO

Keep on preaching...

The only thing I will add is that it is also about perception. The buyer and seller can have different ideas as to what makes a good hunting dog.

The seller may have a dog that he considers ok but the buyer might think it is the best dog he ever bought, or, the seller might say he has a real good dog for sell and it could really be a cull in the buyers eyes.
