I gota six week old pit bull puppy he is bryndal and i was wanting to see sum pics and what uns think a bout cropped ears.

Been told by a few guys who own dogs with cropped ears that they have a hard time locating a bay sometimes and it takes them longer to get to it...doesn't really matter unless it's a big hog and you got two bulldogs and then it spells trouble for the bulldog caught and the other trying to figure out where the bay is...never owned a bulldog with cropped ears but I listen and try and leRn from some good dogmen and was just trying to pass it on for what it's worth. ;)

i kinda wondered that.but that why i asked be for i learned the hard way.I aint never been around one with cropped ears

If you are gonna use him as a catch dog I wouldnt crop them.  When they fold down it helps protect the inside of the ear from getting different crap in there.  Cropping is just a cosmetic thing.

Same here dnt crop messin with dogs hearin in my opinion most that I've had with cropped ears couldn't find bay very good unless u were real close. JMO

X2 don't crop its ears. It let's to much dirt & crap get in their ears to cause infections.

Yeah mdc4444 remember that bad *zz looking white pit u had he coudent find the bay for number 2 in that sorgurm

Cropping does not make them unable to locate a bay.  Being deaf in one ear will.  If they are cropped properly the ear covers just like if they have full ears. 

I crop mine.  Not for cosmetics, I hate bloody ears.

I have heard that it makes there wars senseative to wind. May not be an issue if they ride in a good box but something to consider.

cropped ears is not natural. If the dog is to be used for fighting then cropped ears can be an advantage. I like a good looking doberman with cropped ears except todays doberman is a wimpy looking dog. I like a good looking pit with natural ears.

In the wild the fox, coyote, wolf, lynx, bobcat, badger, deer and most wild animals whether they are prey or predators have erect ears. This I saw in a documentary and it makes sense. This idea has to do with evolution. An example would be that a wolf cub is born and has flop ears. He cannot locate game at night running thru the thick brush because he can't get the exact location. This causes him to miss meals and during hard times can starve due to this. There could be other reasons that I don't know about but I am sure it has something to do with evolution. A deer has erect ears so that it can hear danger lurking near by and also has the ability to pin point its location.

When these animals are sleeping the ears are still erect so that they can hear and flee if needed.

If the ears are cropped too short on a bulldog it is my belief that the dog loses some of its ability to locate the exact location of the bay. The dog also loses the ability to block back ground noise. When we are having trouble locating a noise we cup our ears with our hands and this blocks the back ground noise to a certain extent and we also tend to get a better location this way. A wild animal with prick ears can still close off his ear canal with its ear as needed. A bulldog with ears cropped short as they usually are can not shield thir ear canal which could possibly lead to ear infections.

yea cropped ears are for show dogs and fighting dogs in my opinion , and if you want a pretty house dog crop his ears but a hunting dog really dont need to be fancy because by the time he is 3 he is gonna look rought anyway atleast mine do they live hard lives and their not pretty anymore

if my dogs are born with it then they keep it. ears,tails ....hell even dew claws.

as you can see they anit cacthing to many hogs lol they are my house dogs , but daddy is a catching machine , they are 1/2 brother 1/2 sister

Id be willing to bet that they would get the infections if they had full ears.  Many times it starts from an allergy.  You might check it out if they get them a lot.

my pit brindel has never had a problem going to the bay always the first never had any problems with ears and for being 6 i think if i own another catch dog i would clip the ears jmo not trying to start any thing

Them are some good lookin dogs if i decide to get em cropped what is the best age

the younger the better!!!!

On dobermans no sooner than 8 weeks but no later than 12 weeks.

i have seen dogs as old as 6 get there ears clipped, just remember the older the dog the shorter the cut. a shape of cut all depends on the bell of the ear, a pit with a side flop, or colby style ear usually has a better stand because of the bell of the ear versus a front flop more common with AM STAFFS, and AM bulldogs and so forth.

im not an expert just what i have personaly seen and liked, i do not make a habit of clippen ears.

my lil blue dog shamus has the idea ear to me on a pit, cut or uncut!
