Post by: Bo Pugh on February 19, 2011, 09:00:00 pm
i have been hunting just about everyday when i get off work and all day on the weekends just trying to get some of these young dogs going and their doing so good i hate to have to take a break to even let them get a good rest and they been laid up all deer season so they should have rested then but is there anything to give a dog ,to give them a little extra energy i dont want to shoot them up with no dope or anything just something to maybe give them a little more pep up

vitamin B12 will give them energy and create a bigger appetite....They also make a food topping called Red Cell. They have for horses and dogs.It has a lot of B12 and iron supplements. You can usually find it it a vet supply catalog....

Give them a day off. When you are tired you are more likely to get hurt. Same for dogs. Better to give them a day off than have them down recovering for months or worse. Had bird dogs that would run till they fell over if you let them. Just watch them because only you can make that call.

Also take a look at the feed your puttin out to see if its decent enough to sustain full time workin dogs. Lots of tha stuff their selling these days is garbage mixed with corn.

X2......good feed is the easiest and best way to keep dogs going when they get hunted hard.  That and a few days off now and then.

Never heard of it but spin it around and see what the first line ingedient is. If the first is corn then there is the start of your problem. Also look at protein and fat content to see what level you are feeding. If you hunt em hard gonna have to have a quality feed in em to keep from burning up their energy and provide stamina. The other posts as far as supplements on here are also good advice coupled with their diet. Good luck with it bro.

just because it says 28% protein does not really mean the dog is actually eating 28% protein in some cases especially with the cheap feeds. It could be 18% quality digestable protein and 10% hair (hair is protein) which is not digestible. Same with Bone it is calcium but is not digestible. Be careful with the cheap feeds. The bag must say 100% nutritionally complete if it is a quality feed.

U just want to make sure meat is the first ingredient protein and fat sounds good.  Just remember the corn does nothing for dogs is nothing but filler.  That feed is probally good but might not be good enough if ur hunting them hard

Only bad part about the feeds these days is for a quality one just go ahead and morgatage your house and sell your kids! Its stupid expensive and makes it hard as hell to manage a sizable pack anymore. We went and bargained with our local feed store that carried the brand we wanted to feed and if you get an honest one or buy it in quantity you can get the price down. We are paying round 17.50 per bag on 50lb that retails here for 25.00 per bag. But we have to buy a pallet at a time. Also a tip if you buy your feed at department stores Tractor Supply, ect... Call all the chains within a 100 mile radius and find out which ones are considered to be in a lower cost basis area. It will blow your socks off how much they differ from store to store. Get the price from the low cost basis store and have your local chain do an in store price match. They might whine about it but aint their personal money...Its yours...  And they usually will do it.  They really cry when you roll out every sack on the shelf for the reduced price. Hehe!

Whatever the feed has most of is the first ingredient and then the second most is the next and so on...meat products should be first if it is a good feed.
