Title: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: Circle C on February 21, 2011, 02:35:08 pm Here's a little back story on these pics. A friend of mine came into a "deal" on some cattle, 85 year old man was selling out, and had about 20 pair on some lease property here on the coast. The deal was made, along with the final few months on the lease pasture, then the pasture was to renew in my friend's name. Long story short, that didn't happen... As it turns out, the only reason the 20 pair were for sale, was because they are the one's the old man could not pen! Now that the lease is up, the old man is going to move his other cattle to this pasture, and my friend has to move off... I guess the old man wasn't selling out after all >:(
Middle of last week, my friend goes out with some dogs to pen what he can, we end up with all but two cows in the pens, and get them hauled west to his home place. One of the cows was an old longhorn cow, that he managed to rope, but missed his dally as she was going down into a canal. She ended up crossing a 150' canal, with a 30' rope dragging behind her. Next day went to the neighbors property, tried to get her called up to the lot with his cows, but she didn't come up. Fast forward to yesterday, my friend and I, along with Mandi and our oldest girl, Taylor head out to try to pen the last two cows, the brangus on our side of the canal, and the longhorn on the other side. While we were getting the pens situated, we sent Mandi and Taylor ahead to try to locate the brangus. They actually found both cows back on the correct side, I guess the longhorn decided to make the 150' swim again, rather than join up with the neighbors cattle ??? Anyhow, we got the pens situated, and we sent the dogs in the direction of the cows. In short order they were bayed, and we saw the longhorn cow break for the canal, with the 30' rope still dragging. She went down a 30' bank to the canal, and about time she hit the water, the dogs went to chewing on her ears. My friend ran down the bank and grabbed the end of the rope, about the time I tossed him the loop of my rope, while the dogs had her attention, he was able to tie the ropes together so I could start dragging her, then came the real work. Getting her out of the canal, drug up the 30' bank, and into the trailer. (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/canalcow.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/COW4.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/COW2.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/COW.jpg) (http://i129.photobucket.com/albums/p204/ccoughran/cowtrailer.jpg) After we got her loaded up, we went back after the brangus cow. We put another 10 miles on the horses, in a 150 acre property, trying to get her caught. She would hit the brush, and between the youpan trees and the rose hedge, it was impossible to rope her, There's not much open pasture on that place, and she sure knows how to use the bush to her advantage. Two hours after dark we finally gave up on her. Planning to go back after her in a week or so. Hopefully I'll have some more pictures to share. Mr Ronnie, You might recognize the horse I'm riding. ;) Thanks again! Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 21, 2011, 02:53:10 pm If only the the blurry pics werent so blurry, was that Mandi taking the cell phone pics of yall? Looks like yall had a good time regardless and got one of the two out. Sounds like the brangus cow may prove to produce the better of the two stories ha!
Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: Circle C on February 21, 2011, 03:05:36 pm That was Mandi taking the pics. We had her bring the truck around to the canal so we could load the cow, and I asked her to get some pics. I am pretty sure Tyson will be involved when we go back for the brangus. Let the dogs bay her up, then we'll send in Tyson. I have a feeling she's going to be coming out of the brush once he gets ahold. The pics are blurry because Mandi's phone camera busted, and now the pics look like hell.

and ps. i know a guy who sells 50' & 60' ropes..... ;) Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: Wmwendler on February 21, 2011, 08:56:12 pm Looks like fun..........If yall don't get that brangus cow caught you can always try to snare her. Set your snare on a cow trail with an old lariat rope tie the other end to a small tire and if you find a good over hanging live limb tie the tire to that. The tire and a good limb about 6-8 inches in diameter should have enough give so nothing breaks loose. :o

I had a 50' rope back at the truck... about as useless as an unloaded gun... next time I will have it with me. Waylon, I will tell my friend about the snare., though we might just bring a dart gun and get it overwith if we can't get her caught on the next trip. Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: RockinW on February 21, 2011, 11:03:35 pm send the catchdogs

Post by: Circle C on February 23, 2011, 08:53:36 am Chris your gona tear that nice alum trailer up , you need a catch trailer... that stuff is alot of fun. a big wreck can happen at about any minute.. Craig, That entire day was a Cluster F... We had 9 rolls of hay, two cows, a batwing mower, a 150hp cab tractor, a portable pen, and concrete trough, that needed to be hauled off. I had Mandi's truck hooked to my 32' flatbed to haul the hay, trough, and panels, and another truck hooked to the 24 aluminum trailer, my friend had his newish Dodge dually hooked to his 32' flatbed to haul the tractor and mower that another friend was driving, then my friend hauled his steel stock trailer with his ranch truck, which on the way to Houston sprung a major oil leak. He ended up borrowing his brother's new Ford King Ranch dually to haul his steel trailer. Rather than risk scratching up the shiny new Ford, we opted to use my rig to cut across the pasture. As for having a catch trailer..... If you would quit buying up all the good used one's, I might could locate a nice one. I thought I might get my hands on the one Matt bought last year, but you beat me to it. :o Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: craig on February 23, 2011, 09:13:25 am what a long day,, sounds like everything that good go wrong did..

Sorry Matt I couldn't resist. Cheers M Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: Circle C on February 23, 2011, 09:45:26 am Being the friend that Matt is, he sent me the link to this trailer...
(http://www.ranchworldads.com/images/listings/Escape%20Door1.jpg) http://www.ranchworldads.com/classified.php?listing=8425 While I would sure like to have one that one, I bet Matt knows where a similar trailer is for under 10k... he's just holding out, so he can get it for under 8k :o I wonder how an Easley or Reyes would hold up here on the coast? Seems the steel trailers around here rust out, before they wear out. Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: matt_aggie04 on February 23, 2011, 10:27:46 am You know who your friends are when they know how you operate 8) I have looked at a few Easley trailers in person and it seems to me they prime and paint one better then anybody else. The Reyes I traded Craig had good pain on it at one point in its life but the N Texas sun had done a number on the top of it. I would bet an easley would outlast any other steel trailer on the coast but nothing will outlast AL.
Speaking of deals I don't know where they all went, I have not even found a truck or trailer worth looking at in 5 months. Sure hope some people owe uncle sam a bunch of money this spring and need to liquidate ;D Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: RockinW on February 23, 2011, 03:50:04 pm dang, i was only trying to sell Chris a $50 rope, guess i need to start thinking bigger ;D
Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: Circle C on February 23, 2011, 04:09:08 pm Luke,
There's quite a few things on my RockinW wish list, I'll just add a 50 or 60' rope with a buckaroo honda. Mandi says she is going to get the overshoe stirrups on order... I'll probably wait until I am up there in May to order the leggings, that way you can get the measurements you need. Title: Re: Craig, Here's the pics you were asking about. Post by: mike p on February 24, 2011, 12:47:15 am sounds like you need to put some yellow heaters on her
