Title: Hanging Tree cowdogs
Post by: Draggin Weight on March 04, 2011, 07:23:33 pm
does any one have any knowlage of this breed. What would keep this breed from making a hog dog. I have seen one of these and the old man that had him told me that he could not use him case he was 2 rough on his cattle.

Watched several demotrations at Abilene Tx.  What you have to realize is that there is 2 types of working cowdogs. Thoses that find, bay, then lead the cattle. Then thoses that find, bay then bring them to you, you are the one leading the cattle. Primariary the way a border collie works. The way the Hanging Tree Dogs are bred they work more like a border collie. I really don't think they would fit my way of working cattle, but I'm sure with cat, heeler, collie and I think the man mentioned kelpie, that some would make hog dogs. I will say that the demo was real neat to watch.

A cow dog isa crap shoot. You might get a good one for hogs or you might not. Just like a mut can be the best you ever seen or maybe the worst.

Some cow dogs are bred to work close with the cowboy and do not have to be proven to have a nose and a dog that ranges out gets culled so that type of dog does not make a good hog dog.

there are some out there that are bred to do both.

I stick to the hunting breeds

However, you already have a  grown dog and it wouldn't cost you much to find out if this dog is going to work  or not so hope you get what you want.
