Title: True Hog Hunter ?
Post by: shankem on March 08, 2011, 05:30:51 pm
I was just wondering what makes a person a true hog hunter? Always like hearing others opinions on things(especially the smartass ones) and everyone on here has one that is usually very interesting.

A man that doesn't worry about catching pigs just enjoys watching his dogs work

x2, I like to catch pigs, but the dog work and trying to read what the dogs are doing makes the hunt. Setting the dogs up for success and helping them to be the best that they can be is the best part.

I'm just throwing two cents in here who am I? No one really at least not as far as hog hunting goes but I came from generations of coon hunters and it's what's in my heart. I love the thrill of hog hunting but it doesn't course through my veins. in two weeks of hunting I can knoW something about him not the average person can see I start to know what he does before he does it because history repeats itself, good dogs make good dogs and hunters have sons and daughters that are hunters just the same it's in there heart, heritage, blood and spirit. Plenty of ppl will prolly say this or that about what I say but it doesn't matter much I know who I am.

A true hog hunter is one who cares more about making bars than just killing boars

Glad you left this thread open to us smartarses! ;D

You could ask the same question about any outdoor persuit or way of life and get about the same answer.

I will spare y'all the long version. ;D
One word..........Devoted

It doesn't matter how many or what kind. If you are devoted to your dogs and hunting hogs with them, you are a true hog hunter in my opinion.

I will have to agree with the above, but the one thing that comes to my mind, that i happen to be seeing alot of lately is hunters that only been huntin 4-5 yrs and KNOW IT ALL,  go buy a few dogs and then catch a few pigs and all of a sudden, they are profesional hog hunters,  Then proceed to to tell everyone els that they are doin it all wrong.

A true hog hunter to me is someone that never stops learning, and not affraid to admit they dont know it all, and willing to teach the one that will listen.

and one that would sell me a good BMC pup from guarded lines  LOL!!!!!!

I'll play....  ;D

"A True Hog Hunter".....

Well, first off, I don't consider myself one yet... seen enough real ones to know I got a long way to go...  Everyone's definition of this will be different based on infinite variables... terrain, amount of hogs on said terrain, climate, etc...

Now for "my" opinion of what a true hog hunter is... based on personal observations I've made over time...

First thing that comes to mind is a true hog hunter must love his dogs like family... but be stone cold when need be...  He must also by virtue be an excellent animal trainer... Trainers as a whole are generally an aloof bunch..  Most good trainers I've met, I've initially taken them as being a bit arrogant... Only after spending enough time to get to know one do you realize that arrogance is nothing more than that individuals lack of focus on YOU and complete focus on what it is they are there for... TRAINING THEIR ANIMAL...   A true hog hunter understands animal psychology, both from a dog's perspective, and sometimes more importantly, a hogs...

A true hog hunter cares about catching hogs...  I enjoy hunting as much as anyone... but every true hog hunter I've met is pretty miserable to be around if they start to gettin' burned too much...  ;)

A true hog hunter wants to know their dogs can shut the trophy/runnin' hogs down... but once the dog has proven it can, would rather catch less damaging hogs "most" of the time  ;) ;D

A true hog hunter figures out how to make things as easy as possible for his dogs to be succesful...

You could take a true hog hunter, strip him of his dogs... take him to any random city pound, tell him to pick out 5 dogs and in less than 5 yrs he would still be able to catch more hogs than you....  Wrap your mind around THAT  ;D

And as tnhillbilly said.... A TRUE HOG HUNTER NEVER STOPS LEARNING.

Noah,

You about said it all right there... :)

I will add that it is one great game. especially when you are having to go back to the drawing board on trying to catch that elusive trophy boar that keeps getting away and then the plan works out after the third or forth try.

It is like being a general leading the troops around trying to set them up for the win... war games with the dogs. It just don't get any better.

Anyone devoted enough ( and sense) to have good dogs. Thoses that do,  knows how much time, money and effort goes into a good set of dogs that you want to show off.

First of all, you need a nice aluminum dog box, then you have to buy several "finished strike dogs" and one or two catch dogs that pull you all over the woods until you point their head at a hog and scream at the dog to catch it. Then you need to have a strong opinion about tracking systems and be absolute certain that yours is the best. You have to be real greedy about the hogs and don't tell anyone where you hunt (even though you found out about the place from going with someone else). You really need a huge knife and some expensive cut collars. You don't have to be able to walk because you'll just stay on the 4-wheeler the whole time and tell the dogs to "get ahead". You can't go huntin with one or two dogs. You need to have atleast a half dozen or more on the ground.

-thank you tnhillbilly

I think a true hog hunter is some one who will dive into a spot when he knows he could get cut up just so that he can help his dogs out.... A true hog dogger is nothing without his dogs...

hehe.....I like the smart arse comments.  Sometimes allot can be said in a roundabout way with smart arse comments.

@Noah........The serious ones are ok too lol.  nicely said

I would like to add the judge of a good dog man or true hog hunter is not his own opinion of himself. It is others opinion of him.  Most of the ones i've held in that regard are over 60 years old and still hunting hard dispite a little age and had enough forethought to take care of themselves so they could keep on hunting into old age.

An old man from Lingelville once told me that your not a true hog hunter if you stab them. You have to tie them up and drag them out, unless they're to far from the truck then you have to let them go. I don't know many people that go deer HUNTING, tranquilize the deer and let it back go haha

Noah's post is worth repeating again...as well as the paragraph below. :)

A true hog hunter cares about catching hogs...  I enjoy hunting as much as anyone... but every true hog hunter I've met is pretty miserable to be around if they start to gettin' burned too much...  ;)

I think that a true hog hunter still wants to catch the rank trophy boars but wants the dogs to stay clear of the tusks. A true hog hunter worries every time he turns the dogs loose....worries if someone will steal their dog, if the dog will get crippled or killed by a bad boar, if the dog gets shot by a land owner or a leasee, or even if the dog gets run over on the county road.

Great dog men in general are nice to be around if you are not blind you can learn from them. It is not what they say or how they say it. It is what they do. How they carry them selves around there pack and because they are the alpha dog, the pack does what they are told to do. Great dog men are not born every day and they do not get one dog and call them selves dog men. There are hunters and there are great hog hunters that produce on good days and bad days but they always find a way to make a bad day good.
