what yall think about hunting with a jack russel terrier or a rat terrier??? strike dog

It's a blast! I have a 5 1/2 year old River Rat Terrorist that I use for everything. It's hillarious watching him try to kill a hog 25 times his size. Hawgs hate him cause he's too quick and he'll latch on to their baby makers when they turn around to run.

Every jack I ever came across I said was "haunted".  There are so programed to hunt they are constantly twitching and see things that arent there.  I bet they would make a jam up dog.  I just question their range.  Other than that I bet they would work great

Jack Russels are gritty farts, we had one that would run in and catch, the only bad part about him was that the GENIOUS who owned him before us had his vocal cords clipped, hard to hunt a dog that you cant hear bark.... ;)

Yea, they don't have a nose like a cur dog but their determination and curiousness makes up for it. They'll run into every tree top and look in every hole and every thicket until they find something to kill.

I have owned several but only one that could keep up with there cur dogs in a race! They are good tag along dogs that for sure but would not expect one to start and finsh a long race!

i have been hunting here in california with some of my hunting partners registered rat terriers for around 15 years now and with good success. for some reason the best strike dogs have all been males. we hunt short range dogs and the good rats have been as good as our good strike dogs of larger breeds. his dogs carry decker giant blood in them and he has produced dogs as large as 40 pounds. the best one named little hunted for several years with just 3 legs and was finnally killed by a boar close to my house. i think he has had a total of 4 of the rats killed by hogs  and  this was hunting pretty much 2 to 3 times a week. one kinda cool thing with them is a rat by itself doesnt seem to spook cattle or elk when runnin thru them   findin hog scent.  we have found the dogs alot of times due to the high pitch voxcie of one or 2 screamin rat terriers when we coulnt hear the other dogs till we got real close or else ruff dogs werent barkin and they had a good hog either caught or in a big fight.

I think mine has some of that Decker blood in him. He's over 20 pounds and long legged. He doesn't have any problem keepin' up with the big dogs and never tires out. I said a while back, I'll offer him for stud service. Offer still stands, you just have to come to me or be close. If he says it was good I won't charge for the service.

Of the people that hunt jack Russells, what kinda range do they usually have?

My buddy had a male and a female and while they wernt hog dogs they would flat out leave hunting.  Left one night and never came back.

if you want to hunt a JRT or rat terrier make sure you buy a long legged type or he won't be able to keep up in the thick brush and they tire easily.

i was going to say my uncle raises a few meat hogs and i went to get a couple to feed out and i ran around chasing them for 30 minutes and finally he dropeed his terrier and his sons and they just flat out wore those pigs out

I had a jag that would jump on anything breathing. Absolutely no fear of anything.

The last JRT that I hunted with was hilarious. The big dogs bayed real quick --even before we got his tracking color on him. They were something like 135 yards away from us. The JRT was going nuts and his owner turned him loose. We watched him on the tracking collar---60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 135, eeeeeeeeeeeeee. He attacked the hog like a pit catch dog.
