i had to take a week to get over my anger! any way me and my buddies hunted last weekend and got on a big nasty hog. we were running a pack of young dogs and struck a big rank boar i would guess, any how all the young dogs are rough and gritty as can be and im sure got rough with hog had a good battle this being 3 dogs none over 14 months old, any how the hog blowed up and slung dogs everywhere and took off and we could`nt get it stopped! had a guy tell me that all the dogs were culls that we need to take them over the hill and grow a set and do what was right. i will be the first to say when cullen is needed i have no problems doen so. the thing is he told me all we were doen was teaching hogs to run and that ppl like us are the problem with running hogs, now this comes from a guy that runs atleast 8 dogs on the ground 3 that are RCD full pit, no cross. we where worken young dogs with out any old dogs to see were they were progressing. all dogs get out and flat hunt hard around 300 to 500 yards and willl honor each other i just cant see were there should be a cull in these pups! needless to say i almost made a quick judgement and showed some southern grace to this fella and his brother! but i just turned around and left. what do some of u older fella think on this subject.

I say to hell with him and let him run what he wants to feed and you run what you want to feed!!!

x2 Dont let it get to ya Chris! We ran one 3 miles sat mornin and didnt get it stopped. If a big rank boar hog wants to run there is nothing any dog can do about it! JMO

Your dogs aint culls in my book just learning

well i got a jam up pack of rough dogs and they still get the hell beat out of them some times sounds like you got a pack of dogs that are just young and trying to get it lined out dont worrie about what other people think i have heard lots of bs over my rough dogs but id rather catch the hog not chase it all day and listen to a damn dog bark  sounds like your doing fine

What kind of dog teaches pigs to stay put? Even with the best dogs a hogs desire is to be left alone, and since they can't climb they either run or start shredding dogs.

 I hunt what i like and how I like and could care less what others think are say about it or my dogs. They are my dogs and if im happy with them, thats all that counts because im the one that feeds them.

To each his own. I have very loose baying dogs and like it but if someone wants gritty dogs that's their right. I will say that everyone I know with gritty dogs is always talking about how they got on a running hog and I don't think I've ever had one run when I was just hunting 1 or 2 loose baying dogs. I would kinda be upset if my dogs were baying a real good hawg and someone elses dog ran in there trying the hog and got him running. I'm by no means saying a gritty dog is a cull but there is definately a difference in how a bay goes with real baying dogs and gritty/catchy dogs. You can't tell me every hog can be stopped with gritty dogs so sometimes it's good to have loose baying dogs until you can get in there with a catch dog.

well i can say i got some friends that got loose bay dog and when they get a bad hog that runs i usualy get a phone call wanting some help from my rough pack  the only down fall i c to a rough pack is the vet bills if you dont know how to fix the dogs your self

I have had long races with and without the meat with both loose and rough dogs! I think it has alot to do with the hogs. I have one spot that I hardly go to cause the hogs run so bad non matter what you bring. I myself like rough dogs!

Let me modify my statement, I have seen some awesome loose dogs work a hog and keep them standing still ,as a matter of fact that's the type of pack I want. What I mean is no dog teaches a hog that standing still and getting barked at and eventually caught is a good idea, they have to MAKE the hog conform to their will. And good dogs can do it. I hope that's more clear .

Well when I get really mad I stop and ask myself why. Questions I ask myself: Was what they said true? Am I just being sensitive? Should I have knocked their teeth out? ...

Now I don't know if your dogs are culls or not. But I do know it ain't nobody's place to tell you to cull any dog. But tell someone to shoot their dog is the same as threatening to shot their dog in my book. A comment like that is fighting words. I know the Bible says to turn the other cheek but it takes a big man to walk away. It does not matter if your dogs are culls or not it is just right to say it it like that. Maybe they were trying to help and came across wrong or maybe they are ^$# &^$. But make a statement like that you better not get withing arms reach again.

I may not like the gritty dogs as much as a baying dog but that don't make them culls. Sounds to me like the other guy just can't catch any hogs and just could not man up to his own faults so he blamed you. So you hunt how you want and I will just try to catch the hohs I come across in my way. Live and let live. Hunt and let hunt.

What makes hog hunting great is the fact that sometimes we need loose baying dogs and other times rough tight baying dogs.

Just got off the phone with a friend. He is leaving his lease right now with 2 150# boars that he shot over his kemmer mtn cur. The dog bayed 4 different times and we are talking about thick thick palmettos and he said the hogs broke twice because they smelled him coming or heard him. He really didn't know but he was able to sneak up on 2 different occasions and got 2.

A month ago I went with him and we struck 3 times and was able to sneak in on a 200 pound sow. This is a loose baying dog when hunted alone.

To me, it seems simple: YOU own the dogs; YOU buy the dog food; YOU decide which is or is not a cull.
Sounds like you have some young dogs learning the ropes. Nobody stops or catches every hog.

well i appreciate all the comments and no im not cullen these pups and neither is my buddy, the fella that ran his mouth is a know it all prick that has the best dogs in TEXAS rolleyes! he is one of those guys that everything he does is the right way so he thinks! im just venting but good god i would love to put my hands on that SOB but i knew at the time it would have been bad, lucky for him my wife and kids were there.

and no bryant sometimes he does`nt get on any hogs but he has never lost one  :laugh: the guy really is a tool when i think about it,  i dnt know why he pi$$ed me off so bad when i know what caliber these pups are

chris its not yur dogs at all, i hunt very rough catch dogs and like a old man told me its called hunting you cant catch every one. he said if the heat gets to hot in the kitchen they will leave. and to me if you keep hunting yur spots them hogs just get smarter, when a dog barks on some of my places there already running, so i choose rough dogs not to often my dogs run over half mile but it happens once in a while. but i would say yur pups just need alittle more time and they will be fine. if yur going to cull send them to me..lol

         Noticed on your profile that I've got nearly 20 years on you. Your going to run into thoses kind of people for the rest of your life. Don't let them get under your skin. Least of all get you into trouble. I've found that those kind of people are probably responsible for who I am today. Instead of getting mad they made me more determined to be better than that. A cool head and open mind will always prevail in the end. Good Luck!

I know a guy that's just as bad. When I first got started he told me the only way my dogs were going to learn how to hunt was to watch TV.  The guy is a well known hunter around my parts and acts likes he's davie crocket. I use his comments as motorvation and work  the Hell of my dogs. I want go out with him until my pack can out hunt his. If I ever reach that goal I would never act like the azz he is.

Let's be clear. I am not taking sides because I was not there and did not hear or see what was happening. But I hear Tusk Hog and try to be more like him. That is why I like to hunt during the week. Fewer people for me to make mad and fewer to make me mad. I am just as bad as the people that tick me off. I do think it is important to think about the times I came across wrong and times I was just flat wrong. We should be slow to anger and quick to forgive. I fall short all the time.

big chris I think your getting off on the wrong foot my man. I have hunted with this gentle man many times , No I have never seen him run 3 pits? I am at his house all the time and he dont even own 3 pits?? Maybe it was not his place to tell you to cull your dogs but everyone is going to give you advise about hunting you just gotta do what you and your dogs do. This man is not a know it all type a person, if i belive so didn't he get you  started on running dogs and wasn't you going over there talking to him abunch about his dogs and wanting some of his pups? Hogs are amazing animals and now matter how long any of these guys on here have been after them they will never be able to predict what they are going to do. I am not one to tell you your buisness about running your dogs that you feed and raise, but it may be wise to run some kinda protection with your 3 dogs that are less than 14 months old, it would hurt to give them some help with catch dog or even an seasoned dog. To each his own though.

well if some one does not like the way me and my loud mouth plotts hunt thay do not have to go but dont go with me and tell me i need to cull my muts i have hunted with dogs all my life so i beleve i know win to cull now that said i go with a lot of guys and hunt lots of times i dont take my dogs be cause thay do not like open mouth dogs and if thay go with me thay might not bring thair dogs but we do not tell each other that we need to cull a dog but we do asked what do you thaink thin we will say what we thaink and i have seen some guys have some junk and i have had some my self but we keep our mouth shut . If you feed it house it spend your money thin you must like it so whos place is it to tell you that thay dont like it . So if you dont like a mans dogs dont go hunt with him. So chris if you dont mind open mouth plotts i dont mind a good hog race holler at me o yea you can bring thim ruff pups my plotts might show thim how to get a little ruffer.

If the dogs were rangin 300 500 yds findin and strikin on their own, they defenitly aint no culls.

i tell u fellas what i dnt mind taken this issue up with this guy one bit! BUT i am goen to set this straight No he did not get me into running dogs, No i never tried to a get a pup from him, No i have not been to his place a bunch of times if u consider 3 times a bunch, and the only reason it has only been 3 times is because he is a smartA$$ know it all. i have only hunted with this guy one time and he went back to the place we hunted with out me and it WAS MY SPOT TO HUNT and caught a nice boar. now it may be the beer drinkning that overloads his mouth when im around him or may just be that way but i tell u what there WILL not be a next time and catfish if i know who u are i aint got any ill feelings towards u or him just know i aint gonna take anymore jawing about my dogs and the way i hunt

I think we aught to just lock y'all in a room with boxing gloves and a couple cases of ice cold beer. You can't open beer with the gloves on so we will find out how mad y'all are.

dub that some some funny stuff there. but this ol boy does`nt have much to be mad about other then i asked a question got some answers. never once did i say who or where this fella is from, now there is a cpl ppl on here that seem to know what has happend and if they do it was not by me telling who done what. but i have know problem strapen on the ole gloves if that is where ends up and then drinken some cold ones. there may even be a ticket sale i`ll keep u posted

LMAO!!!. This was the 1st thing that crossed my mind when I read Big Chris's opening post in this thread! Hog hunting can sure bring out the best and the worst in people can't it.

I can understand why you are mad but the best thing to do is let it go. I know. Easier said than done but its still best. If a person can make you angry they already have the upper hand on you.
And for the record, I dont think your young dogs are culls either.

yall know what, i aint mad i aint even botherd by it any more cause i know in the end my dogs produce pork and thats the bottom line! so heath im sure u know where my front door is and it`s open anytime. next time ur mouth overloads ur backside i will oblige u and put a foot in it. and i still dnt think every hog can be stopped and caught. now im done with www. crap on this subject any of u boys that know me personally know i aint hard to find. monty i aint trien to ruffle ur feathers but my personal run in with this fella is my own u may have a totally diff view on him and thats cool, maybe he poped off and did`nt mean what he said or what ever, but he did and it was my dogs. and he back door hunted a place i took him to thats 2 strikes brother. his excuse was i thought u would be worken, how does that make it ok to hunt someones spot?
